The Second Amendment to the U.S. Constitution states, “A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.” Many citizens know and agree with the second part of that clause to keep and bear arms, but how many pay attention to the first part of the clause? Some citizens throughout the Golden Triangle are taking the initiative in what they believe is the Constitutional right to form a local militia. David W. Smith of Mauriceville, com...

    Updated Jul 8, 2014

More than once it has happened, you and your best fishing buddy are standing side by side using the same lure but only one of you is really catching fish. The next time this happens you need to examine you partners lure a little more closely, especially when it comes to topwater plugs. There are plenty of serious fishermen out there who just take a plug out of the package and start using it without any thought of checking several key components. Hooks are the main thing, inferior hooks cost fishermen more fish than anything....

  • Old fashioned summertime fun

    Updated Jul 8, 2014

Pictured: A telegraph out of cans and string makes a fun old fashioned and cheap toy. I remember those long summer days growing up in Orangefield when it was so hot outside. Running into the house to cool off after playing hard outside was like going from a sauna into a freezer. It felt incredible when that cold air hit me in the face. These days most kids spend a lot of time playing video games and watching cartoons inside instead of getting sunshine and fresh air. Maybe if...

  • Remembering Papaw

    Updated Jul 8, 2014

This year a sweet chariot came for my Grandfather. I called him Papaw, and he was my mother’s father, although, in the way of the complex, noisy tribe of my family, he acted as a sort of father-figure to me, too. Both of my grandfathers did. We spent a lot of time together over the years, but what I remember most clearly is that he would sing to me in his nice baritone, old Elvis songs, spirituals, things he heard growing up. He’d warble at me as he pushed me in the red plastic swing in his backyard. “Swing Low, Sweet Chari...
