  • Upside Down German Chocolate Cake

    Updated Jul 15, 2008

My friends Tommie and Paul brought me this recipe from Stephanie Ashcraft of Colorado. It is always good to get new recipes. I still have several who are going to send me one...one of these days. I could write another cook book if everyone that said they would send me a recipe did. Most of my readers want those recipes that people have used for years that were handed down through the years from kinfolk. This recipe put a new wrinkle on my brain. It is an old recipe in a different angle. German Chocolate is one of my...

  • The old oak tree beats work any day

    Updated Jul 15, 2008

There’s an oak tree at 7001 Windmill Lane. A very nice one, actually. I know this because I live next door at 7005, and look at that tree more than anyone else in this world. It’s out by the driveport, green and rich and pretty. The folks who live there, my neighbors, never get time to see it. Alvin works at one of the industrial plants. Sheila is a nurse somewhere. I used to be back in that corporate world, never thinking I’d be semi-retired at 46. But here I am, with the cards on the table facing up. This particular tree...

  • ‘Operation: Catch Fish’ brings angling to the desert

    Updated Jul 15, 2008

More often than I care to admit it the front porch on my house looks like a delivery spot for the big brown truck and the UPS guys know my whole family by name. I scooped up a small box not long ago that had been sent from the good folks at Century Boat Company and sat down to check the contents. Inside I found a letter and shirt, no big deal I thought until I read the letter and understood the writing on the shirt. In the letter was a description and explanation of a fishing...

  • Has That Swagger Returned To The Dallas Cowboys?

    Updated Jul 15, 2008

Last season our Dallas Cowboys knew they had the makings of a pretty darned good NFL football team. And they backed that feeling up with some impressive victories during the first half of the 2007 campaign. The Pokes continued the onslaught of big wins as the weather got colder, winning the NFC East Division and finishing the regular season with a dazzling 13-3 record and were seeded No. 1 in the NFC playoffs with the home field advantage throughout the playoffs and a first-round bye. Of course the reality of the situation is...

  • Fishing on live bait still has its critics

    Updated Jul 15, 2008

After a month of fishing more live bait than I have fished in the past five years, I have found that little has changed as far as public perception of the technique. The general lack of respect exhibited by not only the purists, but fellow live bait fishermen as well is difficult to understand. The folks crowded around the cleaning table are usually quick to offer congratulations until the angler says that he or she caught their fish on live bait. At that point, the catch is filed away in the “Aw, any one can catch fish on l...

The mosquito control office still needs to select...

  • From the Creaux's Nest

    Updated Jul 15, 2008

WHATEVER WILL BE WILL BE Next Sunday, July 20, will mark 39 years since Neil Armstrong landed on the moon with the words, “The Eagle has landed” and “One small step for man, one giant leap for mankind.” That was a proud moment for every American. Anyone today who was five or older then still recalls that event and where they were at the time. In 1961, new President John F. Kennedy directed that the U.S. would reach the moon in this decade and so we did, in 1969. If we ever get a president with the same dedication, not one...
