  • OC nears 2,000 mark for COVID-19

Dave Rogers, For the Record|Updated Sep 15, 2020

Depending on where you get your facts, Orange County has reached 1,941 total COVID-19 cases as of Tuesday, to go with 33 or 39 deaths. Joel Ardoin, emergency management coordinator for the county, gave out the lower number of fatalities Tuesday in Commissioners Court. The Texas Department of State Health Services website had 39 coronavirus deaths listed for the county. The good news is that both Ardoin and TDSHS report that the county has a high rate of recoveries. Ardoin...

  • TxDOT's barrier fix doesn't calm Clary

Dave Rogers, For the Record|Updated Sep 15, 2020

Tommy Clary, the poster boy for Orange County pleas for flood control, was not impressed recently when the Texas Department of Transportation announced it would replace sections of concrete median barriers along Interstate 10 to better allow high water to flow across. “Barriers aren’t our problem,” the North Orange homeowner said. “The dam bridge is our problem, the bridge that dams up the water.” Clary, who lives north of I-10 along Adams Bayou, has taken local elected c...

  • Orange County's Barrow set for Nov. 3 election

Dave Rogers, For the Record|Updated Sep 15, 2020

The number of people applying to vote by mail in Orange County has increased, Elections Administrator Tina Barrow said earlier this week. But so have the number of people hired to count those ballots and oversee a socially distanced Nov. 3 election. President Donald Trump has predicted that an increase in mail-in ballots could cause a delay of days or weeks to decide the final vote count, but Barrow says she expects Orange County’s vote-counting to be complete, as usual, withi...

  • Judice's Cajun Café updates, rewards customers

Dave Rogers, For the Record|Updated Sep 15, 2020

Like businesses all over Orange County, Judice’s Cajun Café in Bridge City did not need Hurricane Laura blowing through on the heels of this year’s COVID-19 shutdown. But owner Al Judice IV decided to make the best of a bad situation. “We’re going to remodel,” he declared last week, answering the question why his eatery had yet to reopen after the Aug. 27 storm. “We got some water damage in the wall, and if I’m going to have to replace the outer walls and everything els...

  • Sherlock Breaux in the Creaux's Nest

Sherlock Breaux, For the Record|Updated Sep 15, 2020

SOMETIMES IT SEEMS ENDLESS In all of my years I can’t recall when life in our country was so chaotic. I look forward to the day when life returns to normal or somewhat normal. The norm has been stretched so far that I doubt it can ever truly be the same again. Less than 50 days before the presidential election and I can hardly wait. I have to make hay and I’m burning daylight. I’d best get going. You would do me proud if you came along. I promise it won’t do you no harm. R...

  • Laura Brings Orange County Together

Maddy Smith, For the Record|Updated Sep 15, 2020

Recently many of us have been affected by hurricane Laura in both Louisiana and Texas. The hurricane has impacted many peoples everyday life. Schools are put on hold causing a problem in the schedule for sports and testing. People today still do not have power, running water, or a home. It is important for all of us to unite and help those who need it. Lake Charles was hit the hardest in hurricane Laura. A large majority of people do not have homes. Places such as the grocery...

  • Kaz's Korner: Will Earl Thomas soon be wearing a Dallas Cowboys Uniform?

Joe Kazmar, For the Record|Updated Sep 15, 2020

The first week of the 2020 National Football League action is now in the books but the two Texas franchises are both still without a victory. The Houston Texans was the first team to suffer a loss this season as the defending world champion Kansas City Chiefs annihilated the Texans 34-20 in a nationally-televised game that was not nearly as close as the final score indicated. The Dallas Cowboys played much better against the Los Angeles Rams on Sunday Night Football before a...

Games This Week WEST ORANGE-STARK over NEWTON—The Mustangs were supposed to play Jasper last week, but the game was canceled due to Hurricane Laura. However, Jasper scheduled a game with Newton last week and really walloped the Eagles. I would have picked the Mustangs to beat Jasper last week, so consequently I believe WO-S will beat Newton Friday night based on my crazy philosophy. WOODVILLE over LITTLE CYPRESS-MAURICEVILLE—The Eagles had a state-ranked Class 3A team las...

  • The Rice is Right

Capt. Chuck Uzzle, For the Record|Updated Sep 15, 2020

Saturday morning’s early teal season opener began with plenty of odds stacked against most hunters in our area but that fact did not dampen the enthusiasm associated with the opportunity to shoot ducks. Many local hunters actually began to camp out at some of the local public hunting areas on Thursday in hopes of ensuring a prized location for Saturday morning. I must admit, even though I love to hunt teal that I am not mad enough at them to sleep on the road 2 days before a...

Gerry Dickert, For the Record|Updated Sep 15, 2020

With momentum in hand, the Orangefield Bobcats were one play away from a season-opening win against Livingston this past Friday night at Lions Stadium. Instead, the two-point conversion attempt was met head-on by a pair of Livingston linebackers and the Bobcats were left with a heartbreaking 21-20 loss on the road. Orangefield trailed the game 21-14 but put together a masterful 15-play, 70-yard scoring drive, capped by quarterback Gunner Jones’ one-yard run with 33 seconds l...

  • Catching Continues To Improve

Capt. Dickie Colburn For The Record|Updated Sep 15, 2020

I was not surprised by the pods of dead shad we saw floating in both Cow and Adams Bayou following Hurricane Laura, but two texts and a short video I received regarding the dead fish in the Nibletts Bluff-West Bluff area were very concerning. Several area bass fishermen said the water in the river both smelled and looked bad the week after the storm, but none of them reported seeing anymore dead fish.Something that depletes the oxygen content like flooded dead grass or leaves is most often the culprit, but there are other...
