  • Congressional redistricting could change representation

Dave Rogers, For the Record|Updated Oct 5, 2021

Orange County will get a new representative in Congress, barring a huge shift in a redistricting plan put forth by a committee of Texas lawmakers. Under the plan, which still must be passed by the full Texas Legislature and signed by the governor, U.S. Rep. Randy Weber’s 14th District would include Orange County instead of the county being a part of Texas House District 36, represented by U.S. Rep. Brian Babin. Since 1842, Congress requires every state to draw single member d...

  • Surprising Bears set to battle in 10-4A-I

Dave Rogers, For the Record|Updated Oct 5, 2021

Little Cypress-Mauriceville's football team is sitting pretty as it enters District 10-4A Division I play this week. After slogging past Jasper 13-0 last week, Coach Eric Peevey has his first Battlin' Bears squad off to a 4-1 start. That's three wins more than LC-M garnered last year in a season affected by storms and the coronavirus pandemic. "The thing about sports is you can have an incredible preseason, but it can go down fast," Peevey said. "[Undefeated district foes]...

  • OC First woman commish Marcelle Adams turning 98

Penny LeLeux, For the Record|Updated Oct 5, 2021

Gloria Marcelle Adams has had "a good life," though the last few weeks have not been what she planned. Since around Labor Day she has been in a rehab facility after a fall broke her hip. She fell in the garage, but luckily, she was discovered by her daughter she lovingly calls "Teesey," after only 30 minutes. "I'll be home for my birthday," she said excitedly. She turns 98 next week on Monday. Adams was born Oct. 11, 1923, at home in the East Texas Piney Woods. She later...

  • Texas Governor Series: remembering governor Preston Smith

    Carl Parker, For|Updated Oct 5, 2021

John Connally was succeeded as governor by Preston Smith who served from 1969-1973. Smith had been lieutenant governor from 1963-1969. Smith was from Lubbock, Texas and while serving both as lieutenant governor and governor had a reputation for being very friendly to the business lobby in Austin. Smith was more of a caretaker governor than any other. Generally, he did not try to influence or meddle with what was going on legislatively. And, was well liked by the great...

  • Sherlock Breaux in the Creaux's Nest

Sherlock Breaux, For the Record|Updated Oct 5, 2021

TIME FOR ABBOTT TO 'MAN UP' TO TRUMP The Texas audit saga of four counties continues. A measly review of four counties, in a state that has 254 counties, is not enough for Trump. He kept pushing Abbott to add audit legislation to the special session agenda. To Abbott's credit he didn't budge on calling for legislation and has not agreed to let an outside firm conduct audits. That made Trump go into a full blown tantrum, suggesting that Abbott is weak and not a patriot, but...

  • Bow season off to slow start, duck hunters making final preparations

Capt. Chuck Uzzle, For the Record|Updated Oct 5, 2021

Another opening weekend for Texas bowhunters has come and gone and the again the weather man is at the front of the conversation. Saturday morning started off as good as you could hope for this time of year with slightly cooler temperatures and light winds that made it almost feel like fall. Most years it seems the first good push of cold air always happens a week before the season opens only to give way to the heat for opening day. This was definitely not the case as it was b...

  • All teams are now entering district battles

Tommy Mann Jr, For the Record|Updated Oct 5, 2021

Some local football teams have already been facing the heat of district battle for a couple of weeks now, while others begin district play this Friday night. Regardless of the situation, all teams have their collective sights set on a victory this Friday and a trip to the playoffs in November. The West Orange-Stark Mustangs (4-1) are doing what they do well and that is use a stubborn, punishing defense to hold opposing offenses in check and an offense determined to put points...

  • Kaz's Korner

Joe Kazmar, For the Record|Updated Oct 5, 2021

It's always great going into the playoffs on a roll. And that's how the Houston Astros will be tomorrow at Minute Maid Park when they play Game One in the best-of-five American League Divisional Series playoffs against the Chicago White Sox. Home-field advantage was quite a tussle as both teams went into the final week of the regular season battling for that honor, which gives the team with the best won-loss record the privilege of starting the first two playoff games at...

Games This Week WEST ORANGE-STARK over SILSBEE—After getting off to an unusually slow start this season, the Mustangs appear to be on their usual course at this time of the season. But they will be hosting the Silsbee Tigers, a team a few people (idiots) picked to win District 11-4A-II. The Tigers did beat a former state champion three weeks ago, but were upset by Orangefield in the district opener the following week while basking in their glory. HUFFMAN over LITTLE C...

  • Numbers improving faster than size

Capt. Dickie Colburn, For the Record|Updated Oct 5, 2021

“No excuses for not joining us,” was a rude way to open a phone conversation. “We are driving over Monday or Tuesday and prove to you that the trout bite is better than you have been reporting,” announce David Simon of Pearland. “Johnny caught and released two trout over four pounds somewhere around Garrison’s last Thursday and that was good enough for us to hold our first mini-tournament in over a year,” he stated. I agreed to fish with them and the field grew to a whopping...

The offense was led by Emmanuel Zepeda, again, rushing for close...
