Donors ear-marking their funds for the March 2022 Republican Primary election in Orange County might want to double check their precinct lines first. The release earlier this year of the 2020 Census figures is causing, as they do every decade, a redrawing of precinct lines. The idea is to have each of the four precincts contain about 25 percent of the county's population, so that the county's resources are spent equitably. County Commissioners, Justices of the Peace and...
A new immunization clinic near Baptist Hospital Orange at 1502 Strickland Drive is opening later this week, county officials say. The clinic will be open daily, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and offer a selection of vaccines, not just COVID-19 immunizations, said Joel Ardoin, Emergency Management Coordinator for Orange County. "It will offer all of the immunizations people typically need, like school shots and flu vaccines," Ardoin said. "But you have to call to make an appointment."...
It's official. Columbanus Motor Sports cut the ribbon on their dealership at 3500 IH-10 West in Orange on Friday. The grand opening and ribbon cutting was followed by a blessing of the new facility by Reverend Daleo of Saint Mary Catholic Church in Orange and a weekend of fun, entertainment and festivities. The new dealership for motorcycles, utility vehicles, all-terrain vehicles, trailers, lawnmowers and generators is massive compared to owner Mark Frey's previous...
William (Bill) Clements was elected after Dolph Briscoe. Clements defeated a former attorney general for Texas, John Hill, who was a prominent trial lawyer prior to being elected attorney general. Clements' defeat of Hill gave Texas its first Republican governor since the post-Civil War era. I strongly supported Hill and urged him to run a very aggressive campaign. Hill ran as though he were already elected governor with the belief that Democrats had controlled Texas for so...
Games This Week WEST ORANGE-STARK over LIBERTY—The Mustangs are well on their way to another district championship, but must not divert their attention from the ultimate goal of continuing to play solid football. Orangefield played a great first half last week, but the Mustangs’ depth finally took over after the intermission. The Panthers will come to Dan Hooks Stadium Friday night with one thought in mind—upset the Mustangs. WO-S must avert a letdown. LITTLE CYPRE...
After writing sports for six decades, it’s plain for me to see how one visualizes the sporting event being covered. Is the offense good or is the defense bad? Is the team really hitting well or is the opponent’s pitching poor? Get the message? I happened to see an article written for Sunday’s Boston Globe by a nationally prominent veteran sports writer who can be seen on ESPN most any day. He was analyzing Game 2 Saturday night in Houston that began with two grand slam home...
Texans have a chance to have their say on a couple of emotional issues for many that were created by government intervention to fight the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. The eight propositions to be voted up or down in the Nov. 2 Texas Constitutional Amendment Election include one (No. 3) that will, if passed, keep the state or any lesser political entities – counties or cities – from limiting or prohibiting religious services. Another proposition (No. 6) establishes a rig...
COLIN POWELL-A TRAIL BLAZING SERVANT “Our nation lost an exemplary leader and steadfast advocate in Colin Powell.” Senator John Cornyn Powell, a four-star general who became the first Black secretary of state and chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, died Monday, October 18, from complications of COVID-19. Powell, 84, had been treated over the past few years for multiple myeloma, a blood cancer that impairs the body’s ability to fight infections and to respond well to vacci...
The 2021 football season in Orange County continues to be one for the record books, as all five teams remain in contention for playoff spots and have a combined 25-9 record through eight weeks. The No. 4 ranked West Orange-Stark Mustangs (6-1, 4-0) handled business this past Friday evening with a 27-7 victory over the Orangefield Bobcats, despite a weather delay and temporary power outage to some of the F.L. McClain Stadium lights. Elijah Gales added another 170 yards rushing...
For a long time I always equated the best time of the year with the full moon in October, which coincidentally happens this week. For all intents and purposes summer is now in the rear-view window and those nasty 90-degree days should be nothing but a memory. Occasionally we get a reminder from Mother Nature that we are never far from crazy weather but judging from the forecast I'd have to say we may be safe for a few days so get ready to enjoy everything associated with this...

AUSTIN— Quail season begins statewide Oct. 30 but outside of South Texas, bobwhite and scaled quail populations continue to their long, slow road to recovery following several years of drought. As such, hunting opportunities and success will vary across the state. Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD) experts say that during the annual Quail Roadside Survey period in August, which consists of biologists traveling more than 3,300 miles, male Bobwhite quail could be heard calling regularly during morning drives, but a...
AUSTIN – With millions of ducks in the Central Flyway and promising conditions in many parts of the state, Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD) biologists suggest these factors could indicate a good waterfowl season is ahead for Texas Hunters. For the second straight year, the May Breeding Waterfowl Survey was cancelled due to COVID-19 concerns in both the United States and Canada. Instead, TPWD biologists largely relied on fellow biologists in the breeding grounds of Canada and the United States prairie states to h...
