  • A lie by any other name

    Updated Mar 24, 2010

By the time you read this, they might have passed that monstrosity they call the Senate Bill. Our president is hot and heavy on the campaign trail for health care just like he was for the first primaries. The only difference is that the majority of Americans believed him back then. Hey, I voted for him in the primary. Today? Well there might have been a president who distorted the truth more than our current one. No, that isn’t a fair remark. Lyndon Johnson and Richard Nixon, among many, many others, were no slouches when i...

  • Revitalizing East Town

    Updated Mar 24, 2010

What started as an update story on the May opening of Orange Trade Days could easily be considered an East Side rehabilitation update. One can’t help looking at the development going on around the future trade days property – 200 W. Turrett Ave – and consider the potential for attracting people outside Orange’s borders. If the number of web site hits is an indication – which they are not – but if they were – 1,600 people are interested in coming to the new market. ...

  • Trading places and technique

    Updated Mar 24, 2010

Like a scene from a bad surf movie the whole “locals only” mystique plays out at the boat ramp every time a new angler from another bay system shows up to sample some new water. “What’s he going to do with a little boat” or “what’s that diving board doing over the motor” are all questions and smart aleck remarks that come from the close minded. Some of the coolest innovations in techniques and approaches often come from folks who are not “locals.” These anglers bring new ideas...

  • Court split on building change

There was much discussion Monday at Orange County Commissioners Court on a change order submitted by Cleveland Construction. He said the specifications of the contract called for the removal or stabilization of the material under the slab. “The contrac...

    Updated Mar 24, 2010

While spring is heralding its entry, and the landscape awakens with color, sound and sunlight, many people will be returning to some of their favorite rituals. The newness of the season can be a magical time of discovery, pleasing to the eyes and the palette.  But there’s something special to discover in this part of the U.S. Something that can be even tastier than ice cream or a snow cone. It drives people to dig deep in their closets for just the right bucket and p...

  • Heavenly Cajuns — who will fill their shoes

    Updated Mar 24, 2010

I’ve been fortunate to have walked this earth with some of God’s great Cajun guys. Men who worked every day to promote their culture, a way of life they loved and felt an urge to preserve. W.T. “Boss Cajun” Oliver, after returning from the military service, launched the first area Cajun music show on KPNG radio. He was raised in Little Abbeville, on the outskirts of Port Neches. When he left home to join the service at age 17, he spoke barely understandable English. To his...

THE PRESSES ARE WAITING TO ROLL Things have been shaky around here this week and deadline time has come and the alligators are nipping at our behinds. With Robert Hankins off sick we’re a writer and editor short. Thanks to a good staff of professionals, they have jumped in the water with the ‘Gators” and are committed to putting out two good papers. It’s a tough battle with a short stick. Some times everyone has to pitch in and make do to put out a good product. We’re known for covering all bases and having the most read...
