I’ve been lucky over the years for I’ve had some of the most frightening and exciting Halloweens ever. In our little town in the Texas Panhandle, Halloween saw all the dusty streets filled with little ghosts and goblins. Not too many back then had costumes. If you were one of the lucky ones, you probably had a black mask like the Lone Ranger. Some of girls even had masks of pink or red. One of the most common tricks back then was soaping windows. It was amazing how much writing you could get from a bar of Ivory soap. Som...
With only ten seniors on the team, five of them not dressed out due to injuries, the Mustangs knew that someone else would have to step up. The underclassmen joined forces with the five seniors on the field to come up with a big 29-15 win over the Bridge City Cardinals. Although two of the scores came from senior Steven Cook, two also came from juniors as well, Darius Mitchell and Reggie Garrett. The offense wasn’t the only side of the ball where the underclassmen had to s...

A portable electric sign with an LED read-out has made its way into Orange County to tell speeders to slow down on their short cuts and in residential areas. Rob Strause, Precinct 2 constable, said his office as well as the Orange County Sheriff’s Office have received “a ton” of calls from citizens on Turtle, Tulane and Linscomb roads in Vidor and Concorde Road in Vidor. “The majority of the complaints are of speeding in the residential areas,” he said. “These roads are in residential areas and are also cut-through...
The Lutcher Theater kicked off a great 30th season Monday night with Lyle Lovett and his Large Band. “Jim is really excited,” said Lynn Clark, wife of Jim Clark, managing director of the theater. “He’s tried to get Lyle Lovett here almost from the time we arrived.” Persistence paid off. I must admit, I had never really listened to Lyle Lovett before, country is not my favorite genre. What Lovett started the evening with doesn’t fall into that category in my book. Count...
McDonald’s unveiled a brand new design/state-of-the-art restaurant with a ribbon-cutting/grand re-opening. Mayor Kirk Roccaforte helped owner Brian Ellis cut the ribbon to welcome customers back for the first day of business since Hurricane Ike struck in September, 2008. The restaurant at 755 Texas Ave. is adjacent to the Walmart parking lot....
While looking for persimmon bread, I found this recipe for Mary Patillo’s casserole. It is true that it has nothing to do with persimmons of any kind. I just bought some sweet potatoes and was remembering just how good a cook Mary was. I though that you might like it instead. This recipe feeds 10-12 people so you might want to cut it in half for a family of 4. Ingredients: 7 cups of finely grated raw sweet potatoes 4 eggs 1 cup raisins 1/4 teaspoon vanilla 1/4 teaspoon orange juice 1 cup chopped pecans 1/2 cup brown sugar o...

The winner will be awarded the Buzzie Gunn trophy. This year the teams seem to be evenly matched. His mom Geraldine and dad Lawrence, still live on Vivian Street where Brian was raised. Coach Chris Stump, after struggling a couple of...

It’s Halloween again, and as usual there are Martians in the trees showing cartoons on the ground. And the world is destroyed once again, so goes the news from 1938. Louise Wood, former newspaper gal who had sense to get out of the game and do PR for Lamar University, has told me many times I should teach journalism. She sees something in me I don’t see in myself. And for my first class I’d take those kids down to Spanky’s and buy them all the beer they want. Probably not a great way to start my first teaching assignm...
It’s finally here, all the waiting is over and you can’t wipe the smile off local water fowl hunters faces if you tried. The long months between the final day of last season and early teal season were bad but that couple of weeks between teal and the general opener is brutal. There’s been a steady stream of aluminum boats, dogs, and camo clad hunters buzzing around the marshes in preparation of this weekend’s opener. Speaking of preparation, duck and goose hunters seem to...
Investigating the Pride House It was a cold October night. Everyone huddled around the campfire telling ghost stories. These were not the tales repeated through the generations of blood roads and phantom hitchhikers to scare the living daylights out of eager listeners. Tales told this night were actual experiences of real life ghost hunters and those wanting to be. About 20 people had gathered at the Pride House in Jefferson to take part in a paranormal investigation led by...
I’ve known very few people more colorful than Ed Lovelace. When he arrived in Orange from Port Arthur and bought the local radio station the city was loaded with colorful people. It was a time when businesses were independently and locally owned. Ed blended in perfectly with the likes of Oldsmobile dealer Claude Brookshire, Neal Miller and Jimmy Conn, furniture store owners, Lutcher Stark, Judge Sid Caillavet, Sheriff Chester Holts, Joe Blanda, local barber; Frank Zeto and C...
Sitting at her kitchen table, Pearl Stanfield thumbed through Dr. Howard Williams’ book, “Gateway to Texas.” Bookmarks were scattered throughout the volume indicating her family’s mark on Orange History. Stanfield celebrated her 89th birthday Tuesday. Her family’s roots are entwined with Orange’s colorful history. Born at home in Brunner on Oct. 27, 1918, Stanfield was one of six children born to Oscar Olivia (Poole) Myers and Henry Carlyle Myers. Brunner was between Ora...
Following Orangefield’s volleyball team this year has been similar to riding a roller-coaster. The team has had slow, steady climbs, fast turns, stomach turning drops, and surprises around each corner. Orangefield began their district run with an impressive 3-0 start. The third win came at home against the cross-bayou rival Bridge City. This was the most intense, high energy game of the season up to that point. It was “Dig Pink” night in honor of Breast Cancer Aware...
Bayou Bowl X between the Bridge City Cardinals and the Orangefield Bobcats will kick-off Friday night at 7:30 p.m. in Bridge City. A friendly rivalry surrounds the Bayou Bowl that began in 2000. The first Bayou Bowl match-up was played in Bridge City. Bayou Bowl X returns the teams to Larry Ward Stadium for the critical Dist. 21-3A contest. The Bridge City Chamber of Commerce kicked off the week’s festivities with the first Bayou Bowl Scholarship Banquet on Monday. It began a...
