CHRISTMASTIME HERE AGAIN The real reason for the season is to celebrate the birth of Christ. It’s also an important time for children. Memories made during their childhood will live with them the rest of their days. Make it as meaningful as you can for them. It proved to be a good paring to open the second round of the winter session. 101 is a heavy bull with stocky legs. As the gateman eased the chute gate open, 101 eased out and went into a...

I found out the other day that going Christmas shopping with a bunch of females isn’t what it’s cracked up to be. There’s more lolly-gagging and visiting than there is buying. I took a detour at the mall and opted to watch a long line of little boys and girls tell the department store Santa what they wanted for Christmas. Some were wide-eyed and eager while several had to be coaxed by a parent to climb onto Santa’s knee and tell him what to bring on Saturday. Suddenly, Santa stood up and pointed in my direction and said, “I k...
In every sport there are different levels of accomplishment, different levels of skill. In baseball you have rookie leagues, minor leagues, and then you have the guys in the majors who are at the top of the food chain so to speak. Far too many times in magazines just like this one, writers just like myself take for granted that everyone out there fishes just like we do. Nothing could be farther from the truth if you just get right down to it. No, I am not saying that I’m b...
The wade fishing has been a little slow for me thus far, but I may have discovered a new technique while wading on Calcasieu last week that was surprisingly effective. When nothing you have tried works, simply toss your hat in the air and cast your lure in the general vicinity. That isn’t exactly how it went, but pretty darn close. After an hour of wearing out a small stretch of shell with several different lures and no positive results, I dug out the cell phone to get my n...

At several fundraising events last spring, President Obama found himself the target of hecklers yelling over "Don't Ask, Don't Tell". Overturning the military's policy on gays openly serving was an early campaign promise of candidate Obama. And with his left flank pushing for action, Obama made it part of January's State of the Union address. That little bit of time ended up being an additional seven months, with the Senate vote Saturday sending the repeal to President Obama's desk. In a week where Obama was fending off criti...

Editor’s Note: This article, written by Vicki Parfait, originally ran in the Dec. 23, 1998 edition of the Penny Record. In the hustle and bustle of Christmas shopping, cranky cashiers, holiday parties, religious observances, plastic money and big bank loans, it is easy to feel overwhelmed with fa-la-la-la-la frustration and tinsel tension. The holiday season boasts the biggest retail frenzy of the year ... and the highest percentage of suicides. But in all its many guises, s...
