    Updated Dec 23, 2009

by Dr. Ralph F. Wilson As the tall, stately angel rose and walked toward the front of the chapel, there was a buzz among the cadets. Gabriel was a living legend. He cleared his throat. I've been asked to speak to you today about what I've learned throughout my career. Foremost is this: we are servants of the Most High God. This lesson I learned not during my days here at the academy, but from a human being, a girl. I had been summoned before God to be briefed on a new mission....

  • A race with Christmas and drastic turns

    Updated Dec 23, 2009

From childhood Christmas to present, quite a ride  The joy of Christmas for me has taken drastic turns as I’ve traveled down this life’s highway. Raised a very poor youngster in south Louisiana, I had very little to look forward to on Christmas morning. We lived in a small, one-room shack, raised by a single mom. A lot of people were poor but real poverty, hanging at our door Christmas morning, brought very little. A fruit, a piece of rock candy or maybe a three-inch pie...

  • Crosby, Bowie bring in the New Year

    Updated Dec 23, 2009

A request in my Dec. 9 column for Christmas favorites brought in four lists, mainly from other columnists, two of whom I’m proud to say do not actually write for this newspaper. As I’ve said many times the only strangers who read these things are press club judges, and they HAVE to read them for the yearly contests.  So if you are reading this, thank you, Merry Christmas and Happy New Year. The lone wolf in the crowd of being someone I don’t actually know was sent in by Tim Hickey. “One of my old favorites was Roy Orb...

  • Holiday Leftovers

    Updated Dec 23, 2009

December is the month of cold weather and rain and for some a little snow. Also Christmas and eating pie, ham, turkey and dressing and leftovers. I have a few idea’s for leftovers. Usually the biggest left over is dressing. You can just freeze it for one thing. Another is simmer some bell peppers, stuff them with dressing and add cheese on top. Bake until dressing is hot and cheese is melted. If you have left over green beans, boil some new potatoes and add to the beans. Mash potatoes make good patties to fry. Just add an e...

  • Santa reveals route for tomorrow night

    Updated Dec 23, 2009

It was all set up a couple of weeks ago that when the fire truck on which Santa was riding in the Orange Christmas parade reached a certain location, he was going to give me a copy of his proposed route he plans to take on the night of Dec. 24 and some of the gifts he would be delivering. But alas! the annual Orange Christmas parade was postponed at the last minute due to inclement weather—not rain mind you, but snow of all things. This really threw a big monkey wrench into the planning of our annual Christmas Korner with t...
