I stood at the edge of my driveway with my head cocked to one side and a smile on my face, the big group of speckle bellied geese finally came into view and the picture was now complete. I turned to walk back into my yard to continue working with my 6-month-old lab puppy and I froze again, this time it was snow geese that stopped my forward progress. I don’t know what it is but it seems I hear geese almost everywhere these days, sort of like you think you hear the phone ring when you are in the shower, you are not quite sure...
Although 2008 has been a very unusual year with the economy very unstable and uncertain and this area still not yet recovered from the devastation Hurricane Ike delivered a couple of months ago, Southeast Texas will pause from all the bad luck to celebrate the Christmas season as normally as possible. Our area was even given a bonus for this Christmas season by receiving the earliest snowfall in history earlier this month. Fortunately for this part of the country evidence of a snowfall disappears almost as fast as it...

A little more than $620,000 will be devoted to Orange County first responders in the New Year through the Homeland Security Grant Program, Emergency Management Coordinator Jeff Kelly told county commissioners in their last session for 2008. The county has put in for radios, computers and in-car video systems for various jurisdictions; and tracking equipment to allow school districts to account for students in the event of an evacuation, Kelly said. Also, the city of Orange will likely receive a mobile building to be...
A DIFFERENT CHRISTMAS TIME ROLLS AROUND What a difference a year makes. Last Christmas everything was organized and calm. Comfortable in our own homes, sleeping in our own beds for a full night’s rest, wondering what St. Nick would bring. Sharing the sound of laughter and chatter as we opened our gifts we took that Christmas and the many before for granted. We believed happy Christmas time would continue to be repeated year after year. Who would ever believe that such a change could come to the door of so many. Hurricane I...

The average cost of a basic elementary school library collection is $80,000. The Bridge City Public Library suffered significant damage from...

The Churches of Christ Disaster Relief Team headquartered in Bridge City had some Orange connections after Hurricane Ike. In fact, the Ninth and Elm Church of Christ in Orange still has 300 applications for assistance that haven’t been processed, and supplies are limited. Ninth and Elm Minister Barry Jones said most new applicants are being referred to Bridge City, however, the church could use some volunteers and donors to expedite the applications already there. Elderly applicants will be treated first, he said. I...
By Joyce Poche’ Bernard Perhaps my earliest recollection of the Acadian-type home where I was born was the wide-mouth brick chimney where a stocking hung from the mantle piece. During the advent of Christmas, if someone had mentioned bringing a tree into the house, the hardy descendants of the Acadians would have laughed. Even cards with pictures of Santa Claus were rare. On Christmas Eve, I remember riding the Nonc Ozema Thibideaux and Tante Eliza by horse and buggy to attend midnight mass in the town of Pont Breaux, as t...
Last week I was looking for a cinnamon roll recipe and my two friends told me they had a good one. You need a can of whop biscuit and cinnamon with sugar mixture. Open the biscuits spread on baking pan and add cinnamon and sugar and bake. I think they were pulling my leg, however, I do have Beverly Chase’s monkey bread so I’ll just pass that along to you until the cinnamon roll recipe I have hidden some place is found. 3 cans biscuits 1/2 cup sugar 2 tablespoon cinnamon 1 stick oleo (I prefer butter) 1 cup brown sugar 2 tab...
When I got tall enough, my folks put me in charge of the star. The one at the top of the tree, and it always seemed to be just a little bit crooked. There was a small string hasp, some cardboard with cheap gold paint and a plastic red stone in the middle. It looked halfway decent, but was all we had. In the family a long time before I came along. So that became my job. Adjust the star. I spent many an hour keeping an eye on that darn thing. The tree presented no real problems. It was mostly humans. They’d put a big b...
Since Hurricane Ike blew through Orange County on Sept. 13, many organizations have banded together and are helping to ‘put Humpty Dumpty together again.” But, there are also individual random acts of kindness happening throughout Southeast Texas. One of The Record’s own, Amanda Adams is the beneficiary of one of those acts from a complete stranger. Adams has been playing online games for the last couple of months trying to earn enough points for gift cards to help subsidize her family’s fund for Christmas gifts. It was one...
An off-white cowboy hat hung on a commissioners’ bench microphone as James Stringer, 72, joked that he’d been “ ... fired more times than anyone else up here.” Friends and colleagues gathered in the courtroom to send-off the longtime Precinct 1 commissioner and former county judge. “I’ve known James for 25 years or more,” said District Attorney John Kimbrough. “And I can tell you this without any question. He has been the county employees’ best friend. He’s done so much to look after the wages and benefits of the emp...
By fifth-grade Bridge City Intermediate teacher Bridget Gunn Toohey ‘Twas the night before Christmas when all through Bridge City Hurricane Ike had left the town all dirty and gritty. The stockings were hung in the trailer with care, Because everyone’s house was under flood repair. The children were dozing all cozy in their beds, While nightmares of storm surge played in their heads. And Mama in her rubber boots, and I with my tools, Were busy ripping out sheetrock and fetching snakes out of the pool. When out by the deb...
