AND THE RAINS CAME When it rained, it poured. We were in a bad drought. As I write this at noon Tuesday, we have gotten slightly over five inches at my Tepee. Unlike the old days, Bridge City subdivisions drain off quicker. The city has really done a good job over the last few years to avoid home flooding problems. There are always some barriers that can’t possibly ever be solved completely, like Hwy. 87 at 1142, Texas Ave. at Roundbunch or Roundbunch at 408. If the rain quits it drains off quickly but mostly the water is t...

BLESSED WITH A GOOD RAIN Well, thank you Lord, for sending us nearly two inches of rain last weekend. Boy was it welcomed. We had endured six weeks of drought and extreme heat. I watered every day trying to just keep our many plants alive. Some in pots go back over 20 years. We protected the beautiful flowering plants from the cold, three storms and the lack of rain. The yearly garden was also having a hard time getting going. The cucumbers, tomatoes and bell peppers are producing and the okra has finally, this week, started...

HOT AND DRY CONTINUES It’s been hot and very dry as I sit here to start this column Tuesday. The weatherman says there is a 50% chance of rain. Last week, they predicted storms and a lot of rain. I didn’t get a thimble full of water. It’s been a six week drought at my place. The only fresh tomatoes I’ve had were a few from Judge Derry and I really enjoyed them. I’ve intended to make the Saturday morning Bridge City Farmer’s Market but both Saturdays I was preoccupied. Maybe this Saturday. We got a lot of response from Ms. Pe...

CONGRATS TO ALL 2018 GRADS Many youngsters will leave the nest, some headed to higher learning, others off to find their vocation, while others are just going out in the world to find themselves. Some will join the military, others will get married. What will surprise them all is how quickly their 10th class reunion comes around. Many lifelong friends will never see each other again unless it’s at a reunion. Going their separate ways, they will make new friends. Old friends are never discarded, they are special, but the for...

BROKEN PROMISES President Donald Trump likes to say when he makes a promise, he keeps it. He also insist that his underlings, VP Pence, Kelly Ann, Rev. Huckabee’s little girl, press secretary Sanders and a host of others go to the airways and say, “When President Trump makes a promise he keeps it.” That’s hogwash. He’s broken most promises. Remember he promised to make Mexico pay for the wall and had his Bubba’s shouting, ‘Mexico will pay for the wall.” There are many other things he back-tracked on but none bigger than the...

RECORD HEAT-NO RAIN IN SIGHT It’s been over three weeks since we have had a drop of rain at my place. We are in a drought. Anything in containers must be watered daily. With temperatures in the 94 degree range, bumping up to record heat, expected to continue all week, with a slight cool down expected next week. The garden must be watered every couple of days. My major problem with that is the Armadillos. They raid my garden every night. I’ve tried different suggestions. None have worked. Seven Dust won’t keep them away,...

ELECTION TURNOUT PITIFUL We congratulate all the winners in Saturday’s elections however, we are disappointed in the overall turnout. Fifty-two thousand citizens are registered to vote in Orange County yet in the countywide port election, with five candidates vying for two seats, only 4,832 votes were cast. In the Bridge City, City election, only 440 votes were cast. In the School board only 598. The City of Orange mayor’s race drew only 1,187 votes. All of the above are very important enities. The total is a small percentage...

LOCAL VOTING MOST IMPORTANT Early voting ended Tuesday, Election Day is Saturday, May 5. City and school board races, along with a very important port election, are being held. Voters can vote countywide for port commissioner candidates. It’s the only countywide race. A voter can cast their ballot at their regular voting box. Voters in the port races have had a tendency to vote in other races and by-pass the very important port election. While you are at the polls voting in the city and school elections, ask to vote in the el...

CROOKS TAKES OVER AS COUNTY JUDGE The smart thing for the Commissioners Court to do is to appoint the person who won the election. Now I understand that is what they did. It would have been a no brainer to have done otherwise. Even though Judge Dean Crooks has never gone through preparing a budget, there are some sharp people on the court that can be of help. The new judge is also very smart and together they will make it work. Putting such a large budget together is very difficult. It’s like a jigsaw puzzle making all the pa...

COUNTY JUDGE CARLTON MOVING ON There is so much going on nationwide I could write an entire column on the daily chaos that has taken place since last I sat here. First here at home however, County Judge Brint Carlton has decided to resign at ‘high noon’ on Sunday, April 22. Honestly that didn’t come as a surprise. I had wondered why Brint wouldwant to stay in Orange. It’s a tough time to practice law in this area, and establishing a law practice even more challenging. Brint had already tried practicing law with his father,...

LUNCH BUNCH WELCOMES PRIMARY WINNERS The Wednesday Lunch Bunch gathered at JB’s Barbeque last week. We were glad to welcome Theresa Bauchamp, and husband Frank, who attended for the first time. Many old timers will remember him when he and Dickie Colburn were football stars for the Stark Tigers of Orange. Theresa is the Republican nominee for Pct. 2, County Commissioner. She has an opponent in the General Election. Her mother, Marcell Adams was the first woman county commissioner in Orange County. Theresa, for the most of h...

SINCLAIR BROADCAST SLAMMED FOR PROMO Sinclair Broadcast group is being criticized for on-air promotional message many of its local news anchors were asked to read that warned viewers about ‘False News’ on competing media outlets. The way it works is that local on-air news host voice concerns about ‘the troubling trend of irresponsive, one-sided news stories. Then the anchors go on to say that many media outlets are publishing ‘Fake Stories.’ The promotion looks unique in each market. Sinclair’s headquarters scripts and...

APRIL FOOLS’ DAY JOINS EASTER SUNDAY Easter Sunday will next fall on April 1 in 2018. Easter Sunday falls on April Fools' Day for the first time in more than 60 years. Just how does this happen? And Who picks the date for Easter Sunday each year? Or Palm Sunday? Or Ash Wednesday, a Christian day of fasting and repentance, which happened to fall on Valentine's Day this year? Well, it's all about the moon. O...

REPUBLICAN PRIMARY UPSETS APPLE CART We predicted 8,000 or less votes in the Republican Primary, there were 7,895 cast. I wrote, in this column, the winning of the county judge’s race would probably win with 4,000 votes, Dean Crooks garnered 4,315. A total of 9,113 ballots were cast with the Democrats voting 1,218 people, lower than the 2,000 I had predicted. The Demos had no local races except party chairman. Even though there were less votes cast four years ago, only 6,000, Carlton received less votes than he did in the r...

ANOTHER ELECTION IN THE BOOKS Congratulations to the winners, It looks like possibly a clean sweep in Orange County. Dean Crooks unseated incumbent Brint Carlton in the Orange County Judge’s race, while Commissioners Court may have new faces as well. Theresa Beauchamp with a very close win over incumbent Barry Burton, Robert Viator wins over incumbent Jody Crump by a large margin. Incumbent Christy Khoury will reamin County Treasurer, as David W. Smith fell under 23 %. The Republican Primary got off to a slow start but starte...

FINAL WEEK BEFORE ELECTION Election Day, March 6, is only a few days away. We want to thank all the candidates who used our two newspapers to get their message to the voters. Look them over and make your choice. Creaux and I don’t have any predictions on who will win. We do believe there will be some change on commissioner’s court. We are sticking to our earlier prediction that only 8,000 or less votes will be cast in the Republican Primary. With no contested races in the Democratic Primary only a couple thousand votes wil...

VERY LITTLE GOOD NEWS Last week, a Federal Grand Jury indicted 13 Russians for meddling in our presidential election, a real attack on our democracy. President Trump puts blame everywhere but on Russia. He still refuses to enforce sanctions against Russia imposed by our congress.*****The winter games, the 2018 Olympics are in progress in Pyeongchang, South Korea. In the medal tracker, the U.S. is behind their regular pace. Some new Olympic stars will emerge but as a country, the U.S. will be disappointed unless they can have...

TODAY IS A SPECIAL DAY Today is Valentine’s Day and also Ash Wednesday, the beginning of Lent. The beginning of the Lenten season marks 40 days before Easter. Christians will observe the Holy Season, each faith in its own way. I know for sure Catholics will participate in annul traditions that have been passed down for generation. Some of the earlier traditions have been modified by later generations even though many Catholics choose to still practice the old customs, like not eating meat on Friday, etc. We want to extend H...

FACING ANOTHER WEEK Well, it’s come on another week with things about the same here at the Creaux’s Nest.Mark did fly back in Sunday night and was here at the Nest early Monday. Roy is still out but much improved and can’t wait to get back in the action. We also have missed his input. He usually has a tidbit or two that we can pass along. President Trump has been doing a lot of bragging about his great economy. Truthfully he hasn’t had much to do with it. For 84 months, since Obama passed the recovery act that saved the aut...

HANGING TOUGH Things are a long way from being close to normal here at the Creaux’s Nest. Roy is still out, the Creaux is also under the weather and Mark is still out of town. The medical folks want Roy to be off at least another month. He says he’ll be back next week, maybe not at full speed but back. He says he won’t make the Lunch Bunch this week but plans to be at Van Choate’s Tuffy’s next week. He is hoping everyone will plan to attend. Apparently there are different versions of the flu bug. FACING ANOTHER TOUGH WEEK Another week has come around and it’s time to produce new issues of the County Record and Penny Record. We are not at full speed at this time. Roy got out of the hospital over the weekend against the doctor’s recommendation. He’s not well and struggling not to go back. Hopefully, before long, he will make a recovery. He has suffered extreme dehydration that will take some doing to restore muscle tone. He is being helped by nurses and rehab therapist. We’ll keep you informed. He and Ms. Phyl were both...

Old Man Winter Howls In Orange County 'Old man winter' has blown in to 2018 in a way that is unexpected for most of us on the Texas coast. On Tuesday, in anticipation of freezing rain, sleet and hazardous road conditions, has forced Orange County government offices and school closures. A near record breaking 17-degree was recorded Wednesday morning in the county. The last time temperatures dropped down that low in January was 1984, 34 years ago, to 11-degrees. Miserable winter storms are usually avoided by residents here but...

LOCAL ELECTIONS—LOW KEY The earliest primaries in the nation this year are in Texas. Early voting begins Feb. 20, only six weeks away, and will end March 2. Primary election day is March 6. As far as I know, it’s the earliest party primaries in the states history. Neither Ted Cruz nor Gov. Greg Abbott faces stiff Republican primary opposition in statewide races. Cruz faces four lesser known Republicians; Abbott faces two minor challengers. Those races are usually the ones that bring out the turn out. This March, the turn out...

ANOTHER YEAR HAS FLOWN BY GOODBYE TO 2017 It was a year of several disasters, storms and fires. On Jan. 20, a new president was sworn into office. New York businessman Donald J. Trump, who had no experience in government, became the leader of the free world. He brought into office a group of people who also had no experience in government. Many of them are now gone. Some are under indictment, with others expected. Here at home, we were hit again with another hurricane named Harvey, that brought the 100-year flood. Many home...
