You can also check out our offices in Bridge City and Orange for a copy of the paper. We hope the rain for the most part stays away but just wanted you to know what we are facing. *****I’m working in low gear and it’s a slow go so I best get going. Please come along, I pro...

LOCAL ELECTIONS ARE OVER SOME ARE GLAD--OTHERS SAD We had a lot of good, local candidates running for various offices. Most candidates were diligent about working to gain votes. Campaigning is hard work and expensive also. We owe a debt of gratitude to anyone who would offer themselves for public office. I’m often disappointed for the loser because I know how hard they tried. A lot goes into someone getting elected and it’s not always the most qualified. Personalities, organization, money and out working their opponent oft...

EARLY VOTING NOW IN PROGRESS From the White House to the Court House and every place in between, it's election time in Texas. On the local scene, we have some important races, positions that affect our everyday lives. On the local level, all positions being challenged are in the Republican Party Primary, with the exception of the race for Democratic chairman. There is apparently some interest in the Democratic presidential races. Local candidates who have been canvassing door-to-door are running into a lot of people who say...

THE HOLY SEASON BRINGS SPECIAL MEANING Lent begins today, Ash Wednesday. The next 40 days is a special Holy time for most Christians. I know how special it is to Catholics because of my upbringing. Those long ago days have stuck with me. The Lenten season, starting with Ash Wednesday until Easter Sunday is when faith meets tradition. It’s a joyful time in one’s religion. Of course there are those who will ask, “What did you give up for Lent?” In my youth, people were sincere and gave up something they would truly miss. T...

MARDI GRAS PARADE, POLITICS AND MOVING ON We’ve ventured on another issue with an important player out. Mark had hip replacement Tuesday morning and is expected to be in hospital a few days. Hopefully he will be able to work from home in a couple of weeks. He is due to have the other hip surgery at a later date. He had put the surgery off as long as he could and would soon have become immobile. Hopefully the recovery will go well and he’ll be back to work soon. *****The Iowa caucus is next Monday, Feb. 1. The results rea...

MUSTANGS EARN LIFETIME OF MEMORIES On a writing pad sitting here on my desk last Thursday, before Fridays state championship game, I wrote my prediction, West Orange-Stark 22-Celina 20. I really believed the Mustangs would win but only be a two point conversion. I was looking for a very tight game, a nail biter. It was a great win for the team, school and community. Mustangs 22-Bobcats 3. The West Orange-Stark state championship came after a 28 year wait. Friday they won the...

TRUMP SINKS TO NEW LOW Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump sinks to a new low in political rhetoric by calling for a total and complete shutdown of Muslims entering the United States. That is insane and hurts U.S. relations with our allies in Muslim countries. It’s un-American and against our constitution to discriminate against one’s religion. Many Muslims are in the U.S. military, many are business owners and generate jobs and add billions of dollars to our economy. Ninety-nine percent of Muslims are good people,...

GO MUSTANGS Last week the West Orange-Stark Mustangs decisively defeated the Wharton Tigers 47-15 in the Class 4-A Region III, Division II area round playoffs. Mustang quarterback Jack Dallas threw four first half touchdowns which appeared like Coach Cornell Thompson was honing his passing game. Wharton was the perfect team for WO-S to prefect their passing game against. Dallas was 16 of 21 for 219 yards through the air. The Mustang ‘Chain Gang’ continues to be reliable. They are, and for many years have been, the Mus...

STORMS PASS, TECHNOLOGY KEEPS COMING Chanccs look good for us to dodge a hurricane this year even though there is still plenty of time before November. As bad as storms are on the Gulf Coast , I much prefer them to living in Tornado Alley or facing the fires in California and the constant floods in other places. It’s worth the risk of living on the coast for all the benefits it offers. Technology is changing the world. By 2019, Apple plans to manufacture and ship electric cars...

HISTORIC DEAL ON IRAN’S NUCLEAR PROGRAM The United States, Russia and other world powers reached a historic deal Tuesday that will curb Iran’s nuclear programs. The agreement is aimed at easing the threat of a nuclear armed Iran in the Middle East. The agreement was reached after long negotiations. President Obama spoke to the nation early Tuesday saying, “This deal offers an opportunity to move in a new direction.” He said if negotiations had not worked the only other option would have been war. Shortly after the preside...

WELCOME TO ANOTHER ISSUE The weeks are going by so quickly. July has arrived and brought summer with it. Over the last week, we’ve had alligator attack that took a life. Multiple fires have burned structures in downtown Orange. I suspect there’s a fire bug around. In South Carolina, the Legislature voted to take the Rebel flag down. You know what’s funny? That flag was the Virginia battle flag, not South Carolina's. Their flag was different. Oh well, on a beautiful note: First Baptist Church of Bridge City marks their 75th...

HAPPY BIRTHDAY BRIDGE CITY Bridge City celebrates its 45th birthday on July 7. Many changes have come to the city over the years. Back in 1970, when it incorporated, there were many dirt and gravel roads. Nearly half of the city didn’t have water or sewer. The part of the city that did operated under a water and sewer district that was later absorbed by the city and expanded. Drainage was its biggest problem. A two inch rain flooded many homes and rendered some streets impassable. The biggest improvement came after Hurricane...

WHAT REALLY MATTERS The nine lives taken at that historic South Carolina Church snaps us back to reality. Life has a way of reminding us of what really matters. It’s time to put people over politics. What kind of nation do we really want to be? *****Some of our friends here at home are facing some serious health problems. Dirk Flowers has an aggressive kind of cancer called Glioma. He went through brain surgery; the doctor was able to remove between 70 to 90 percent of the cancer. His pain is being managed and he’s able to...

FATHER KNOWS BEST Well, maybe not always, but he always means well. Being a dad is a privilege. Being a good dad is sometimes hard. Unless you have raised teenagers, you might not fully appreciate the trying times. Even with the best of kids, they sometime believe they know more than dad. Also they will chalk it off as Pops being old fashion. They don’t realize that it’s common horse sense he’s acquired along the way. Some day, when they have children of their own they will realize how right dad was. By then, they will be co...

DESPITE WEATHER BASSMASTERS A SUCCESS Despite five to seven inches of rain falling on Orange over the weekend, over 30,000 braved the weather. Had it not been for the bad weather officials predict those attending the Bassmasters festivities would have gone well over 40,000. Some great events had to be canceled. Art in the Park and its 130 booths remained closed and the Tracy Byrd concert was also canceled. The media and community had really backed this year’s Bassmasters Elite Series. I don’t believe this publication had eve...

NEW WEEK, NEW COLUMN, SO IT GOES Well, here we go embarking on another column. The weeks are flying by so fast there’s no time to rest. I missed my prediction that Spring would arrive by March. Cold is coming out of the west. I believe this should be it. Daylight savings time begins at 2 a.m. Sunday. Spring your clock up an hour, you’ll lose an hours sleep. WHEN THINGS GO WRONG From time to time, every newspaper I’ve ever read makes mistakes and we make our share. We sometimes blame the Gremlins, or computer glitches, but most often it’s an employee error. Someone not following the rules. Last week on this page, in a sub-head, we had the Texansplaying the Seahawks in the Super Bowl. Four sets of eyes looked at it. No one caught it. No harm done. We did however make a more costly mistake when we ran the previous week’s K-Dan's/Danny’s Food Center ad. That does cause problem...

EARLY BIRD GETS THE WORM Maybe I’ve said this before but there is a whole other early morning culture that many are not aware of. I’m an early riser and have been since that early cow milking back in the old days. For most of my adult life, I’ve always gotten more done from 5 a.m. to 9 a.m. than from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Many of the successful people I’ve known are up and at ‘um early. In a lot of cases they catch breakfast around 9 a.m. when most of their work is done. You would be surprised who these folks are. One day, a coupl...

LIONS CLUB 75TH CARNIVAL BEGINS I have nothing but praise for the Lions Club members who put on the annual carnival. It’s a lot of work just putting up the rides and booths. They work for weeks. Even though I’m sure there are well over 100 members, it seems to me that I see the same couple of dozen people doing the grunt work. Others join in when the big show opens and for a few days that’s the fun part but before the carnival closes those daily workers are tired and ready to put away the toys for another year. They do a gre...

JUST LIKE WE SAID Last week we couldn’t have predicted any closer what the congress would do with the border refuge problem. At one time Speaker John Boehner had the votes to pass the senate bill that had cut a billion dollars off of President Obama’s request. Then freshman Sen. Ted Cruz cut his legs out from under him by calling a dozen congressmen to his dungeon and telling them they would not get any Tea Party pac money if they voted for the bill. In disgust Boehner said, “The President will just have to solve it with exec...

MISSING MY FRIEND It’s been a week now since I’ve seen my friend Jonathan Seagull. Every morning for going on a year now I’ve thrown him some vittles. He walks around proudly; head up, shoulders back and when he is eating the other birds stay away. The two pigeons that sit on the top of the building across the street just watch until Jonathan finishes. The grackles sit on the utility lines and wait also for the big boy to finish. I’m concerned about him however. I last saw him Monday of last week. Jonathanis a loner, doesn’t...
