VALENTINE SWEETHEARTS Friday is Valentine’s Day and here are a few sweethearts I would like to acknowledge this year. First, Alice Cole Hartsfield for all the time she gives towards helping the elderly and being available to help whenever needed.***Also a special sweetheart is Nancy Gillis, a nice lady we have known for several years. Nancy is a technician at Brown Hearing Aid Center in Orange. She goes far beyond what is required to help people with maintaining their aids to their highest quality. She wears a hearing aid and...

FINAL IMPEACHMENT VOTE WEDNESDAY Republican Senators are expected to vote in lock-step to acquit Trump. Faced with creditable evidence that Trump wasabusing his power, the GOP Senators would not muster enough respect for the Constitution to investigate and allow witnesses. John Bolton could confirm first hand knowledge that Trump extorted Ukraine by withholding millions of dollars in military aid on the announcement of an investigation into Joe Biden, his political rival. “Hear no Evil,” The Senate will abandon its role as...

BOLTON PROVES TRUMP GUILTY AS CHARGED President Donald Trump’s legal team was on course to a “rush for acquittal” when they were faced with a leaked draft of Trump’s former national security advisor John Bolton’s book. Bolton confirms that Trump told him he planned to continue to withhold nearly $400 million in military aid for Ukraine until their president announced an investigation into political rival Joe Biden and his son Hunter. Bolton collaborated a central piece of the charges against Trump. Three Republica...

TRUMP SENATE IMPEACHMENT TRIAL BEGINS When Donald Trump was elected, I made a few predictions, such as Trump will never release his tax returns or split with Russia’s Putin. I also wrote that it would be four years of chaos. He has lived his life as a New York shyster. He has been sued over 4,000 times for beating people he dealt with out of their money. I also made the prediction that Trump would get in trouble before his term of four years was over and could be impeached and removed from office. It’s beyond me how over the...

KAZ DEAN OF ALL SPORTS WRITERS The other day a man stopped me at the market, thanked me for the paper and said, “The first thing I read is Kazmar’s column.” My response was “really.” The guy said he had followed Kaz for many years. That got me to thinking. Joe arrived in Orange in Sept. of 1966. That year, 54 years ago, youngsters entering first grade would be 60 years old today. Joe followed them in sports, then he reported on their children’s sports activities, then he got to their grandchildren, three generations...

DEAR FOLKS AND GENTLE PEOPLE Back years ago there was a popular song with these words, “those dear folks and gentle people who live in my hometown.” I don’t recall exactly when that was or who sang it but I’m often reminded of that song by some of the great folks who live right here among us. I’m convinced you won’t find better people anywhere. It’s a privilege to know so many and share a piece of life with them. I find them in everyday life, just ordinary folks, women and men alike. So many of those good people I’ve k...

WELCOME TO NEW DECADE 2020 We’ve come on a new decade and for me, if I make it to Jan. 3, 2020, I will have lived in ten decades. I’ve seen and experienced drastic changes in one lifetime. I recall when the 1950’s arrived my upmost goal was to see the new century 2000, 50 years away, roll around. I jokingly said I would sign a contract to make it to that time and then would be ready to go. I’m glad I didn’t sign because the Lord has given me a 20-year bonus and I’m praying for more. I’ve been asked which decade I find has be...

THE HISTORICAL IMPEACHMENT OF A PRESIDENT On Wednesday the full Houseof Representatives votes on two articles of impeachment against President Donald John Trump. The charges are on constitutional grounds. The first article is that Trump misused the power of his office by soliciting and pressuring a foreign government, Ukraine, to investigate his domestic political rival and interfering in the upcoming U.S. presidential election. The second article charged that the President categorically obstructed the congressional impeachme...

REPORT DEBUNKS CLAIMS BY TRUMP ALLIES The Justice Department’s Internal Watchdog report by Inspector General Michael Horowitz concluded the FBI was legally justified in launching its inquiry into Russia’s interference in the 2016 election and that no political bias influenced the FBI decision to conduct these operations. Horowitz also said there was “no evidence” the FBI placed any undercover agents in the Trump campaign. However some minor faults were found in the surveillance of former foreign policy advisor Carter Page to...

IMPEACHMENT HEARINGS BEGAN For the third time in my life, the United States is going through impeachment hearings to find out if the president purposely violated his oath of office. The testimony and evidence have been clear from the start. The summery of Trump’s July 25 call with the Ukrainian president shows Trump asked for a “favor” that would directly assist his reelection. Military aid appropriated by congress was being withheld by Trump conditioned on Ukrainian investigations of Trump’s political rival Joe Biden a...

COUNTING OUR BLESSINGS Even though we start on a sad note with the passing of so many good people, I’m thankful that God chose to put us Cajuns and the crawfish down in the same place. How awful it would have been if he had put the Cajuns in Arizona. Personally, I’m thankful for great friends. We’re thankful for the outstanding readership The Record Newspapers enjoy. Thanks to the business people who support us. We remain today the most popular papers in Orange County. We’re thankful to our staff that are dedicated to thei...

LOCAL DIGNATERIES DIE IN 1988 PLANE CRASH I first met Marlin Thompson when he arrived in Orange as their first full time city attorney and was elevated to city manager from 1957 to 1959. He later joined the Ward Stephenson Law Firm. Ward, along with his legal secretary Jackie Bean pioneered and developed the art of civil practice in asbestos related cases. The firm saw instant success. Ward died shortly after as a young age. Marlin, with the help of Mrs. Bean, who guided him through lawsuits, became wealthy overnight. He and...

TRUMP IMPEACHMENT TESTIMONY BEGINS At 9 a.m. on Thursday, July 25, aides in the White House Situation Room gathered around a speaker-phone, pens in hand, to document what they heard. The call was from President Trump to Volodymyr Zelensky, the new Ukrainian president. By the end of the conversation Trump asked Zelensky, in dire need of U.S. military aid to fight Russian led invasion, for a favor. He said, “You have to do us a favor though.” He wanted dirt on Joe Biden and wanted Ukraine to find evidence that Russia was...

LUNCH BUNCH HONORS WWII VETERANS Several veterans are expected to attend the Lunch Bunch gathering to honor 98-year-old Cedric Stout, the area’s only Pearl Harbor survivor, who celebrates a birthday. Orangefield native Stanley Simon, 98, an artillery staff sergeant at the “Battle of the Bulge” is unable to attend. We also want to extend a 73rd wedding congratulations to Gladys and Stanley, who will celebrate Nov. 9. They were wed in 1946. We look forward to visiting with the more than a dozen old soldiers who will be in at...

IT’S TIME FOR A BREAK FROM MORBIA I haven’t been to work in over a week. I’m not a happy camper when I can’t get out with the natives and go to work. Over the last few days I’ve been spending too much time at Gulf Coast Cardiology and with Dr. Morbia. I like the Doc and spending time with him, he’s very smart. I like picking his mind. He loves his work and prides himself with keeping patients heart healthy. I’ve been depending on him for over a dozen years. He knows everything about my heart and arteries because he’s...

TURKEY GIVEN GREENLIGHT TO SLAUGHTER KURDES The United States began withdrawing troops from Syria’s border Monday. Opening the door for Turkey to invade and slaughter thousands of Kurds and Christians. Turkish military is expected to target U.S. backed Kurdish forces, men and women who have been fighting along side of American troops against ISIS. This action threatens American security and weakens credibility among our allies, plus the withdrawal of U.S. forces would reignite ISIS. The move plays right into the hands of R...

A STORM CAME “WAS I DREAMING” I woke up Sunday morning confused, was I in the twightlight zone or had I dreamed the events of the last few days? Imelda, a rain carrying storm, had hit the Gulf Coast area, from Houston to Cameron, Louisiana. She was no Harvey generally but to those affected she was just as damaging. I heard stories about families who had just moved into their Harvey repaired homes that were flooded again. In some cases folks that had dodged Harvey damage were struck with over-flowing rivers. I toured the are...

FALCONS CALL ON MATT BRYANT The Atlanta Falcons make abrupt change at kicker. They signed pro-bowl kicker, Bridge City’s Matt Bryant after they had cut him seven months ago. Matt was invited in for a tryout Friday and less than 24 hours later they signed the 44 year old to a new deal paying him $3 million for one year. The Falcons had not renewed Matt’s contract and brought Giorgio Tavecchio in but he has struggled through the preseason. Matt looked sharp in the tryout. He credits some changes to his off season program. He...

REWARDING MYSELF I decided that come Saturday I was going to spend the entire day on myself. It had been a long time since I had done that, so early Saturday I sat down at Denny’s for an outstanding breakfast that I over did of course. Beverly and Jody Raymar spotted me as they were leaving. We had been playing phone tag for several months and missing each other. Bev, like her late mom Ms. Pearl, gets prettier with age. Jody hasn’t changed in 15 years. Sorry I didn’t spot them when I arrived. For several years, on given...

HATE ESCALATES IN THE COUNTRY Another month has flown by and here it is August already. School begins in a couple of weeks. Kids today have short summers. In my day we didn’t start until September or when the crops were in, sometimes nearly October.*****What saddens me today is the escalation of hatred in this country. Sunday at the Garlic Festival inGilroy, California, a 19 years old, reported to be a White Supremacist, killed three people and injured 12 others using an AK-47-type assault weapon. A six year old boy, a 13 y...

MUELLER’S 448 PAGE AUDIO REPORT Trump said highly respected, former special council Robert Mueller, who testified Wednesday at a House hearing, “Should not be given another bite at the apple.” I can see why, because this apple is rotten to the core and the Mueller report bares that out. Sean Hannity, the snake who spews the most venom on FOX News Prime Time, tutored his Boy Scouts Jim Jordan, Kevin Jones and others on how to question Mueller and break him down on how the investigation into Russia’s interference in 2016 el...

COUNTY SET TO MOVE FORWARD Today Orange County again is under a different administration, this time by design. The last two years have had as many county judges as the previous 40 years. After Dean Crooks resigned the county judge post, former county judge Carl Thibodeaux, a Democrat, was asked to fill the post for a few months and at the time of his resignation appoint someone to fill the vacancy on the court. One of the present commissioners would resign and the rest of the court would appoint that person to become county...

THANKS “TIB” A special thanks to Judge Carl Thibodeaux who answered the call of duty and again did a yeoman’s job filling the county court judgeship. He is already recorded on Orange County history as the longest serving County Judge who came back for a four-month stay. Thibodeaux will be leaving soon so John Gothia can be certified but Tib has weathered so many storms we couldn’t let him leave without another disturbance coming by to say goodbye. Hopefully it will be a light-hearted storm that will make its presence felt in...

TRUMP SLAMS HILLARY IN RE-ELECTION BID A few days ago, President Donald Trump announced his bid for re-election at a rally in Florida. His show wasn’t very presidential. He led the chorus for “Lock Her Up,” a reference to Hillary who has been investigated and cleared 87 times. He also approved of his loyalist shouting, “CNN Sucks.” He again repeated his claims of 2016, except he didn’t ask who was going to pay for the big, beautiful, magnificent wall. A report says white supremacy groups have grown by 30% since Trump took...
