    Larry Johnson|Updated Jun 11, 2015

For The Record An incredible season of baseball for the West Orange Stark Mustangs has come to an end. On Thurday the Mustangs lost their battle for the UIL Class 4A State Baseball Championship 7-3 to the Argyle Eagles at Disch-Falk Field in Austin. Jack Dallas got the start on the hill for the Mustangs but was relieved by Grant Anderson after the Eagles leaped ahead 5-0 in the top of the second inning. The Mustangs answered in the bottom of the frame as Chase Rutledge...

  • Colburn: Small changes make big differences

    Updated Jun 9, 2015

“What the heck are they using,” asked Oscar Vilma after spending the better part of an hour watching two young fishermen just wear the trout out. Obviously frustrated, he posed the question in slightly stronger words, but the message was clear. He had seen enough. While they were catching fish virtually every cast, Oscar was changing lures virtually every cast and we had four only keepers in the box when his wife, Tina, asked in a serious tone of voice, “Do you have any frozen shrimp?”It was still early in the day, but my...

  • Bigger baits can lead to big time action

    Updated Jun 9, 2015

During the spring and summer months when the weather gets nice and everybody gets the fishing fever, I get lots of families that like to fish without a whole lot of effort. Times like these mean drifting live bait and just having a good time. I personally would rather use artificial lures when I fish, but if it makes life easier and folks get to enjoy more about the sport of fishing I am all for it. While pre-fishing for some clients who would be bringing their children I decided to see what kind of program I could get going...

  • Mustangs take the final step in the journey to Austin

    Updated Jun 9, 2015

Commentary by Chuck Uzzle In his four years as head coach of the West Orange Stark baseball team Shea Landry has seen his program have their share of ups and downs. Early on in Landry’s tenure there were some growing pains as the entire baseball culture went through an extreme overhaul. Landry took his squad and decided to instill some old school attitude and work ethic in order to improve their results. At first it was tough, the cupboard was a little bare when it came to t...

  • New Hook Expands Arsenal

    Updated Jun 2, 2015

It is amazing what a couple of days of sunshine and a light north wind will do for your attitude if nothing else.It can’t stop the massive amount of water still running downhill from Toledo Bend, but it gave us an opportunity to fish parts of Sabine Lake that we haven’t been able to fish since the end of April. Depending on where you launch on the north end of the lake the ramps may still be underwater, but at least it wasn’t raining and the wind wasn’t a limiting factor....

  • Kaz's Korner

    Updated Jun 2, 2015

Astros Earn “A” for First Two Months of 2015 Season One of the biggest surprises this spring is how the Houston Astros got out of the gate for the 2015 Major League Baseball season. Most of their early success came from solid starting pitching and a bullpen that has been virtually impenetrable. Then a few of the hitters caught fire and delivered when the chips were down and the outcome of the game was on the line. The result was the Astros reaching the 30-win plateau before any other major league team and also tying for hav...

Ace Chase Shugart was on the mound with a lineup that has been hitting the ball extremely well. The Cardinals got everyone's spirit up when Chase Shugart doubled off of Huffman's LHP...

  • Reading your fish for more success

    Updated May 26, 2015

A pair of 10 pound redfish slid down the shoreline of a grassy bank with their backs and tails exposed for all to see, shrimp and little baitfish showered across the surface hoping not to be the last one in line or the first one on the menu. As I stood on the poling platform and watched these fish going about the business of finding something to eat it was easy to tell they were almost oblivious to anything else but their next meal. My fishing partner for the day, Ray Johnson, readied his 8 weight fly rod for a cast as the...
