The streak is gone. Texarkana Pleasant Grove won the Class 4A Division II state football championship Friday afternoon, ending a 40-game win streak for West Orange-Stark. Pleasant Grove scored on back-to-back pick-sixes in the final 30 seconds to finish with a 41-21 win over the two-time defending state champions at AT&T Stadium in Arlington. WOS, which allowed only nine points per game in a 13-0 run to its fourth straight state championship game, trailed 21-6 at halftime and 28-6 in the fourth quarter. But the Mustangs...
“Thanks, but I want to hook my own fish,” said the ten year old youngster when I tried to hand him my rod as soon as the big fish hammered the Swim bait and started peeling off drag. “It wouldn’t really be mine if I you hooked him!” I had passed up several flocks of gulls working over trout hoping to put the young angler on a good redfish when we stumbled up on this school of oversize reds ganged up on a fifteen foot break. They were an absolute gift from heaven.Every time our lure bounced across the magic spot it was engul...
KAZ’S KORNER A good crowd of West Orange-Stark fans were anxiously waiting for the kickoff between the Mustangs and Wimberley for the right to reach the state championship game this weekend at AT&T Stadium in Arlington. If there’s anything more annoying than the person in front of you jumping up and down like a Jack-in-the-Box at a football game, I just don’t know what it could be. But this senior citizen with a full beard dressed in stylish blue jeans and a Lumberjack shirt was the culprit that was really annoying me. I exp...
Meri Ellen Jacobs Mustang Insider For the Record When the high powered Wimberley Texan offense met the Chain Gang from West Orange-Stark, the saying “Defense wins Championships” was proven yet again. The Mustangs will head to AT&T Stadium, “Jerry’s World,” on Friday to face the Pleasant Grove Hawks, after beating the Texans, 30-21, to play for their fifth state title. “Our guys gave a great effort and beat a quality team,” Head Coach Cornel Thompson said. “They made big plays but we were able to adjust and force them to r...
Games This Week WEST ORANGE-STARK (12-0) over WIMBERLEY (13-1) 7:30 p.m. Friday at Legacy Field in Katy—It appears that either the Mustang offense is getting weaker or the opponents’ defense is better each week. I like the second choice better. The Mustangs have been riding the talent of their Chain Gang Defense and need to get their offense humming again after blanking Salado 14-0 last week. Wimberley came on strong in the last quarter to overpower undefeated Cuero, the same thing that happened several years ago when the...
AGGIES NEW COACH JIMBO FISHER IS THE BEST MONEY CAN BUY Texas A&M’s football program operates on the old motto: “It takes money to make money.” And that’s why it hammered out a deal to land Florida State’s Jimbo Fisher on a 10-year contract for $75 million, which happens to be the richest deal in college football history. Fisher takes over the Aggies’ football program headed by Keith Sumlin for the last six years. Many Aggie fans were doing cartwheels off their bar stools after hearing the news of Fisher’s hiring last w...
“You mean nothing in my little sack of baits is going to work,” asked Jason Bloom in an incredulous tone of voice.“I thought I hit the nail on the head. The last time I fished with you the only colors we used were stinky pink, limetreuse and red shad and I had to go to two stores to find stinky pink.” After reminding Jason that the last time he fished with me was ten years ago, I had no logical answer for what changed. The reality is that it takes only a few bad trips to benc...

KAZ’S KORNER Last weekend, which signified the final college football games of the 2017 season had its usual laundry list of head coaches who lost their jobs, but the long Thanksgiving weekend also had the top two teams in the weekly Associated Press Poll victimized by Ol’ Man Upset. The Iron Bowl rivalry between No. 1 Alabama and No. 6 Auburn is always fierce and gives the oddsmakers fits because they are usually wrong. The bookies are crying again this week after the 4½ -point favored Crimson Tide saw their dream of an unde...
KAZ’S KORNER Last Sunday was very crucial for both the Houston Texans and the Dallas Cowboys. They both were three games behind their respective division leaders and desperately needed a win to still have a chance at overtaking these front-runners. The Texans and Cowboys were in the same dilemma as another half-dozen or more National Football League teams who had one or more key players injured and through for the season. Houston has been without the services of defensive stalwarts J.J. Watt and Whitney Mercilus plus q...
Photo: WOS Mustang Justin Sibley tucks the ball and hits the outside to score on the first series of the game. Sibley had two carries for 48 yards, both for touchdowns. RECORD PHOTO: Earl Davis Mustang Insider Meri Elen Jacobs The West Orange-Stark Mustangs made it look easy Thursday night when they beat the Brookshire-Royal Falcons, 54-0, at Baytown’s Stallworth Stadium. The 37th win sets the ’Stangs up to face the Mexia Blackcats this Friday night in Conroe’s Buddy Moorh...
Photo: Hunter Uzzle For the Record Capt. Chuck Uzzle The first half of duck season for most Texas hunters in our area will end on Sunday and will not re-open until the first week in December depending your location. Reports from all along the coast were almost mirror images of one another, "either you got ducks or you don't". The birds that still remained in the area after the opening week or so got educated real fast and headed for areas with little or no hunting pressure. A...
For the Record Capt. Dickie Colburn While they can be an absolute blessing for bay fishermen, clouds of gulls and terns working over surfacing shrimp are very much akin to fool’s gold. The user-friendly sign that feeding fish are at least in the area is a confidence builder like no other, but relying on the same scenario to occur even two days in a row can be a recipe for disappointment. It is all based on the food chain. The ultimate loser in the deal are the shrimp migrating o...
Playoff Games This Week WEST ORANGE-STARK (8-0) over BROOKSHIRE ROYAL (1-7) 7 p.m. Thursday at Stallworth Stadium in Baytown—The Mustangs have played Brookshire Royal and in Stallworth Stadium before with huge successwhich should continue as the ‘Stangs roll to their 36th straight victory. LITTLE CYPRESS-MARICEVILLE (4-4) over KILGORE (7-3) 7:30 p.m. Thursday at Abe Martin Stadium in Lufkin—The Bears will have to play tighter defense in the playoffs if they expect to advance to the next round. Offensively, they seem sound...
Last week a small group of National Football League owners met to discuss the extension off NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell’s contract to 2024, This was supposed to be an informal rubber stamp approval like it has been in the past. But Dallas Cowboys loquacious owner Jerry Jones—who was not even on the committee discussing this matter—halted the process and wanted to offer his two cents, which is not at all unusual for the Cowboy’s boss. Jones has been on a secret vendetta to oust Goodell and bring someone in at a much lo...
In the world of fishing it doesn’t take long for even the best kept secrets to get exposed.I say “exposed” indicating there was never any intention of the fortunate anglers ever sharing what they found with another angler. At least to date, however, consistently catching big trout in Sabine Lake remains a well-kept secret! Long before we were forced to deal with the effects of Harvey on the trout fishing, even the most accomplished area trout anglers were struggling to consi...
Picture: Keith Longlois holds up a very nice strap of ducks from the weekend. For the Record Capt. Chuck Uzzle A steady stream of boats, hunters, and dogs crowded the local launches Saturday morning as the Louisiana duck season officially opened. Adams bayou, the Vinton Drain ditch, Cow Bayou, and Highway 82 towards Holly Beach looked like a parade route as local hunters descended on the marshes in anticipation of legal shooting light and the first flight of ducks. As...
The water in the Sabine River didn’t look nearly as good as it did in Sabine Lake, but the wind had forced us out of the lake early and we were hoping to save the day with an “iffy”Plan B. The switch in gears was foreign to my guests as they spend the majority of their fishing time wading waist deep water in search of trout and redfish on the lower coast. It was apparent that some degree of immediate success was imminent if this trip was going to last very long. They reluctantly clipped off their saltwater offerings and tied...
The sports fans who sat in front of their television set for more than 12 hours Sunday were treated to two of the best events of the year and maybe of all time. And both of these happened to involve teams from Houston—the Texans versus the Seattle Seahawks and Game 5 of the 2017 World Series between the Astros and the Los Angeles Dodgers. If one were to give a one-word description to both of these games, it would have to be SLUGFEST as far as I’m concerned. The Texans had to travel to Seattle to meet the Seahawks in the lat...
“I am not going to tell you!”That was Sam Michele’s blunt response to “Are the flounder doing it at Cameron yet?”It is his contention, and rightfully so, that every November the Texas limit is reduced to two fish and Texans flood across the Causeway to take advantage of the more liberal Louisiana limits. “When the migration (fish not fishermen) is in full swing it is not unusual to see the same guys making two trips a day over here,” added Michele. If you have ever attempted to fish the Cameron ferry area in November or Decem...
Games This Week WEST ORANGE-STARK over LIBERTY—Although the Mustangs are rated as the No. 2 Class 4A team in the state of Texas, they are in second place at 2-0 in the District 12-4A-II standings, a game behind Liberty (3-0). These two lock horns Friday night in Liberty, probably for the district championship. The ‘Stangs have had two weeks to prepare for this game because of a bye last week and should add to their state-best 33-game winning streak. LITTLE CYPRESS-MAURICEVILLE over CLEVELAND—Cleveland really needs to win t...
For the Record Capt. Chuck Uzzle “You remember when….” is a question that I am hearing all too often these days, especially when I am talking to water fowlers. Less than a decade ago our area marshes were a haven for all types of migratory birds, world class wing shooting at its best. The skies were filled with ducks and geese and the local hospitality and great Cajun cuisine made this part of the world a magnet for hunters from all around the globe. Well the food and hospital...
A steady, cold rain fell throughout the first half of the game at West Point’s Michie Stadium until it turned to sleet fueled by a biting cold North wind which made me feel as cold as I have ever felt in my young life. This was my first--and I vowed my last—college football game that I would ever attend. I was with the Boy Scouts from Schenectady, N.Y., which was 130 miles north up the New York State Thruway. And it was Halloween Day to boot. Army was hosting the University of Virginia on this unusually cold and damp day in...
In what is becoming an annual event, the SETX Kayak Club hosted yet another successful tournament on Sabine Lake last weekend. The two day event drew 31 entries and most had no problem locating the redfish and flounder. As in years past, the event was dedicated to Heroes on the Water and the group raised $4000 with a raffle in support of that organization. They also donated $500 which was money raised in one of the side pots to the Cristin & Katie Foundation. No team enjoyed a better two days of fishing than the father-son...
Down Life's Highway Our entertainment center changed my life, and maybe, helped make me who I am today. When the French-speaking people of Nova Scotia were banished from their homes, those that didn’t die at sea or were sold on the slave blocks, made their way to Louisiana. They wove their way down the Ohio and Mississippi Rivers and floated the bayous into South Louisiana, where they had heard people from France lived. They banded together, after arriving 6,000 strong, in o...
