Kaz's Korner Joe Kazmar - For The Record I remember arriving in Lake Charles, Louisiana in early September of 1959, a fuzzy-faced 17-year-old from Upstate New York who had a difficult time understanding the Cajuns speaking English and also getting my McNeese State classmates to interpret my Yankee dialect. The more people I met in the Lake Charles area, the more confused I got as to why they were LSU football fans instead of talking much about supporting the McNeese...

Capt. Chuck Uzzle - For The Record Any tackle geek knows they are the next great weapon in the angling arsenal, saltwater spinnerbaits have come to the coast and the redfish have a new enemy. They come in array of different colors and each one does a little something different that sets it apart from the competition. Truth be told there are 2 basic styles and they both do a great job catching fish. The most common style is the “safety pin” style, famous in bass fishing cir...
Capt. Dickie Colburn - For The Record If you take folks fishing long enough you will witness any number of things that you would never even imagine happening and something that took place last week ranks well up on that list! I was fishing a middle aged couple, as if age made any difference, and we were catching well enough considering the conditions. The wind was howling out of the southwest and we were catching a redfish or two on virtually every high speed drift across the...

Vivian Luong of Orange plants a longleaf pine seedling as part of the Centennial Forest project. For a generation sometimes seen as preoccupied with instant gratification, it was refreshing to spend a day planting for the future, even if that future is a long way off. “I hope my kids can come see my work in the future. I want to set a good example for them,” said Aleks Allen of Buna, and a member of Lamar University’s Honor’s Student Association (HSA) of the Reaud Honor’s...

Captain Chuck Uzzle - For The Record Each and every year I get the opportunity to meet fishermen from all over the state, many of whom have dreams just like all of us about catching a huge fish. Seasoned saltwater veterans know this time of the year is not for the faint of heart and certainly not for the folks looking for instant gratification. Temperatures and foul weather make winter fishing as much of waiting game as anything, waiting on tides and feeding periods to align so the show can begin. Many fishermen new to the...
Staying warm equals more catching! Captain Dickie Colburn - For The Record After carefully shuffling their way across the frost covered dock, my clients hunkered down behind the leaning post in an effort to avoid the dreaded chill of the upcoming frigid boat ride. When I eased under the Adams Bayou Bridge the surface temperature in the bayou was a balmy fifty-one degrees, but we were about to deal with the chill factor of a 15 mile per hour northwest wind in 35 degree weather!...
Kaz's Korner Joe Kazmar - For The Record Sunday night’s Super Bowl may not have been the most exciting or action-packed culmination to another National Football League season, but it did offer a reiteration of something I have been harping on for 50 years—games and division titles are won with good offense, but championships are garnered by teams that play great defense. And for the second straight game, the Denver Broncos defense took away most of the running and passing lan...

The Wilkes had their way with the redfish last week. Dickie Colburn - For The Record When I saw Jim Morrissey’s number pop up on my phone I initially thought that he had yet another stat to report concerning last weekend’s Tailchaser Open Trout Tournament. If it weren’t for Jim, the results of virtually every redfish or trout tournament held on Sabine would never get shared with anyone that wasn’t on hand for the weigh-in. He does a fantastic job of not only updating live weig...

Joe Kazmar - For The Record Seattle’s huge 43-8 upset over the Denver Broncos in Super Bowl XLVIII not only earned respect and popularity for the Seahawks, but it also got the ire and attention of Denver’s general manager John Elway. The feisty Elway, who had led these same Denver Broncos to back-to-back Super Bowls after the 1997 and 1998 seasons went right to work retooling the Broncos’ defense from top to bottom in the two years since that devastating loss to Seatt...
