  • Trout bite slowly improving in Sabine Lake

    Updated May 5, 2015

The handful of Sabine Lake anglers that have doggedly fished their way through six weeks of fresh water runoff managed at least the hint of a smile last week in spite of the fact that the SRA is still running both generators on Toledo Bend 24/7.Five consecutive days without local rain has been just enough to help pattern trout that have been in a survival mode due to the reduced salinity levels. The water clarity is nothing to brag about all the way from East Pass to the jetties, but the trout are starting to show up again...

  • The Next Generation

    Updated Apr 28, 2015

For years the intersection of Bower and Osborne in Bridge City Texas has been home to many a great duck dog and a great dog trainer. Dow Gene Anderson has trained dogs for more years than he can remember and he’s helped even more hunters train their own dogs. Dow’s skills as a dog trainer were picked up by his son Jody at an early age and that has turned into a great partnership between father and son. Both men are supremely talented and knowledgeable in the field of tra...

  • Covering All Bases

    Updated Apr 28, 2015

Baseball and softball at its finest are here in Southeast Texas. First of all, it has been a tear jerker because of all the senior nights and some kids will be playing their last game or playing on their home field for the last time. Also, it's all knotted up in local baseball. As of Monday, Silsbee and Bridge City are tied at 7-3 for the division lead. WO-S and LC-M are at 6-4 while Hardin-Jefferson is at 6-5 with only one game left to play. Bridge City and the Mustangs went...

  • Rain not hampering tournaments

    Updated Apr 27, 2015

While a fisherman’s idea of perfect weather conditions would undoubtedly result in the cancellation of most outdoor activities for more well-balanced individuals, the entire month of April has still been a challenge for both fresh and saltwater fishermen.Bass and crappie fishermen have had the best of it, but even they have had to fish on some pretty nasty weather days. Give any serious fisherman an overcast seventy-five degree day with a light rain, less than 10 mile per hour wind and a falling barometric pressure and he o...

  • More fishing than catching

    Updated Apr 20, 2015

Two consecutive days without rain would have to be considered a major drought after what we have sloshed our way through over the past month. Local saltwater fishermen have taken the biggest hit courtesy of the additional fresh water and the SRA is still running one generator with five gates open on Toledo Bend due to a rising lake level. As you would expect, the river is high as well and rushing into Sabine Lake at a pretty stiff pace. The local bass fishermen participating...

  • Rain not bothering the bass

    Updated Apr 14, 2015

It is Tuesday morning and I am one cup of coffee away from hitting the “send” key on the computer and filing this week’s column for the paper. My previous two editions of The Record splashed down in my driveway under a steady downpour and it looks as though this week’s paper will do the same as well. I have no doubt that someone somewhere needs all of this rain, but we have had more than our fair share this spring. Had they not been able to close the gates on Toledo Bend la...
