  • A Little Less Fresh Water

    Updated Apr 7, 2015

While local youngsters were forced to hunt Easter eggs in soggier conditions than they would have liked and thunderstorms idled across east Texas, the SRA was finally able to squeeze back the discharge rate up on Toledo Bend. For the past three weeks the majority of the Sabine Lake fishermen have been forced to either make the run to Big Lake or ply the waters south of the Causeway due to the massive amount of fresh water runoff. And, while they paid both fresh and saltwater...

  • Redfish lead the charge into Spring

    Updated Apr 7, 2015

Just about any Texas fisherman who ever wet a line knows that the spring is full of many things, most of which fall into the category of uncertainty and unpredictability. The all time #1 villain is the weather man and his friend the marine forecast, aka “that #$%@ wind”! For plenty of us who take advantage of every season the waders that were used during duck hunts have become your best friend as the gears switch in favor of chasing trophy trout in 60 plus degree water. All but the most hard core of anglers routinely shu...

  • Big Start for Triangle Tail Chasers

    Updated Mar 31, 2015

The Triangle Tail Chasers kicked off their 2015 tournament year out of Ancelet’s Marina Saturday morning and set the bar pretty high for the remainder of the year.In spite of the absolutely horrid water conditions in both the rivers and the lake, the top four teams still put together three fish stringers in excess of 21 pounds! The finish was so tight In fact, that there is no way the fourth place team of Joe Strahan and Colt Westbrook could have just eye-balled the three catches that beat them and not felt like their 2...

Matthew Kress of Orangefield shared the MVP award. Coach Tremaine Hancock said Rutledge...

  • Solving the Tide Mystery

    Updated Mar 31, 2015

Most any fisherman who spends time on our local waters has a theory about how the tides work and where they need to be to catch fish during those tides. Suprisingly enough there are plenty of people who don’t understand how important the tides really are, or for that matter what a tide is. According to Webster’s dictionary, tide is the periodic variation in the surface level of the oceans, bays, gulfs, inlets, and estuaries caused by gravitational attraction of the moon and sun. The influence the moon has over the tides is...

  • Super Finish to a Super Event

    Updated Mar 24, 2015

I ducked under an abandoned vendor tent to dig out my cell phone and check on the time.It was 1:45 and the ankle deep water covering most of the park was rushing into the streets on its way into a muddy and steadily rising Sabine River. Police officers and local volunteers sloshed their way through the driving rain helping hard core spectators navigate the flooded streets and avoid ever widening mud holes in the parking lot. In a word, the Saturday edition of the prestigious B...

  • Finding your own “Hot Spot”

    Updated Mar 24, 2015

I can’t tell you how many times I have seen this happen, Joe Angler reads the fishing report in the paper or hears about one at a local tackle shop and decides he better get down there because the fish are literally “ jumping in the boat, or so the story goes. Well Joe Angler gathers up all his gear the next morning and at sunrise he is at “the spot”, only problem is he is not alone, not by a long shot. Joe Angler now has dozens of boats all in the same small area all expecting to do a number on the fish; they are all sad...

  • Sweet 16 Sports Two No. 7 Seeds, one 11 Seeds, one 8 Seeds

    Updated Mar 23, 2015

The first two rounds of this year’s Men’s NCAA Basketball Tournament had several games that were decided by the last shot—or in a couple of cases—the referee’s whistle, with five being dubbed “upsets” by the way they were seeded. This year’s Sweet Sixteen bracket doesn’t really show any bona fide Cinderella teams, although No. 11 seed UCLA beat a No. 14, but there are one No. 8 seed, two No.7 seeds and two No. 5 seeds that are still alive because they beat a lower seeded team. The biggest upset of the tournament so far...
