Neither event offered any surprises as the Midshipmen from Annapolis held on for their 13th straight victory over the stubborn Cadets from West Point 17-10 and Oregon’s stellar quarterback Marcus Mariota nabbed the 80th Heism...

    Updated Dec 9, 2014

Hard to believe we are already half way done with the 2014-2015 duck season but it’s already here. This weekend marks the opening of the second split for Texas duck hunters in the south zone while our neighbors to the east in Louisiana will be idle. The second half for Louisiana hunters will re-open on December the 20th one week after Texas re-opens. So far the overall report has been very good from both sides of the Sabine River as local hunters have cashed in on an outstanding population of waterfowl in the area. All of t...

  • Wading is not for every one

    Updated Dec 8, 2014

Austin Smith begrudgingly struggled with his waders while his youngest son, B.J., slipped over the side of the boat and his eldest son, Lon, repeatedly assured him that he was going to enjoy his first attempt at wading. We could not have asked for better conditions, but Austin could have cared less. “Waders were made for duck hunting and boats were made for fishing,” declared Smith. With both boys already in the water and casting, I helped him untwist his suspenders while explaining in general how all of this wade fishing stuff...

  • December means it's crunch time in the NFL

    Updated Dec 8, 2014

Last weekend was the first time in many moons that the National Football League had seven games on its regular schedule featuring teams with winning records matched against each other. These very important games occurred the first weekend in December, which usually is “crunch time” in the NFL and should help determine what teams have the best chance of reaching the playoffs, which begin next month. There even were a few teams—including our Houston Texans and Dallas Cowboys—who extended their fading playoff hopes with victori...

  • Duck season 1st split crawls to a close, goose numbers continue to build

    Updated Dec 2, 2014

The first half of duck season sputtered to a merciful end for most local hunters on Sunday and will not re-open until Dec 13th for the south Zone. Reports from all along the coast were almost mirror images of one another, the combination of few birds, high bluebird skies, and little wind was the kiss of death for most hunters. The lack of any “hunter friendly” weather was easily the biggest problem most waterfowlers faced, the steady stream of cold fronts that kicked off the opening of the season basically disappeared and...

    Updated Dec 2, 2014

The Mustangs are used to breaking records, but the record that they broke Friday night with their 34-0 win over the LaMarque Cougars will be one that goes down in the Cougars books that they might not want to remember. For the first time in 18 years, since 1996, LaMarque was shut out, held to zero points. That is definitely something for the WO-S Chain Gang to hang their hats on. “I told the kids to savor the win,” Head Coach Cornel Thompson said. “It’s been 18 years since they have been shut out, so we had a reason to cele...

Marshawn Lynch -- Well-Liked But Hard to Understand The weekend-before-last quickie trip to Seattle that was presented to wife Susan and I by Orange’s All-Pro safety Earl Thomas III of the Seahawks provided us with many memorable events. We were accompanied by many of Earl’s family and got to see several area landmarks in and around Seattle. And it didn’t matter where we went, banners and photos of the Seahawks players were everywhere. We visited with many interesting football fans, security personnel at Century Link Stadi...

  • Goose hunters outlook improving

    Updated Nov 25, 2014

I stood at the edge of my driveway with my head cocked to one side and a smile on my face, the big group of speckle bellied geese finally came into view and the picture was now complete. I turned to walk back into my yard to continue a little boat maintenance and I froze again, this time it was snow geese that stopped my forward progress. I don’t know what it is but it seems I hear geese almost everywhere these days, sort of like you think you hear the phone ring when you a...
