Having two weeks to get ready for the Super Bowl can affect both teams practicing their tails off to become pro football’s world champion Sunday night. • Bass Catching to the Rescue

    Updated Jan 20, 2015

The trout fishing on Sabine Lake has been an absolute grind over the past week or so.Muddy runoff that has reduced water clarity to less than six inches all over the lake has gotten most of the blame, but that isn’t the real culprit.Surface temperatures that dip into the low forties at night and far too much fresh water are the toughest obstacles for local anglers to overcome. In response to the massive amount of rainfall that recently fell across the Toledo Bend area, the S...

  • Kaz's Korner

    Updated Jan 20, 2015

WE’RE SURPRISED HOW SUPER BOWL XLIX TEAMS GOT THERE This Korner has been telling you since before the Christmas holidays that the Seattle Seahawks and the New England Patriots would face each other in Super Bowl XLIX on Feb. 1. But we’re not tooting our own horn for calling it correctly for a change, but are almost embarrassed because both teams made it to the Big Dance exactly opposite the way we predicted. We figured that the Seahawks would harass Green Bay quarterback Aaron Rodgers because of his immobility and cause him t...

  • Referee's reversal helps end Cowboy playoff hopes

    Updated Jan 13, 2015

I’ve been watching National Football League games for more than 60 years and one rule has always been consistent—the ground cannot cause a fumble. That rule basically was true on a pass completion, too, until a few years ago when Detroit’s All-Pro tight end Calvin Johnson went up in the air, made a sensational grab of the pass, nearly did a flip in the air as he landed in the end zone and then rolled a couple of times to the back of the end zone and as he was raising the football in the air triumphantly, it squirted out o...

  • So much for no cold weather

    Updated Jan 13, 2015

“You don’t have to worry about us flaking out,” stated the first client out of the truck.“We expect to fish in bad conditions this time of the year and we will grind all day long for one shot at the right trout.” I cannot tell you how many times those same words have been a part of the introduction process while standing in the predawn shadows at the launch. Judging by their attire, however, there was certainly no reason to question their commitment to staying the course. They had donned their waders before ever leaving the La...

  • Cold weather and big bites

    Updated Jan 6, 2015

Ninety-nine percent of the fresh and saltwater fishing addicts logging the most time on the water over the course of the next two months will be there for one reason only…..the opportunity to catch a double digit bass or trout. Waterfowl hunters rightfully garner the most double takes from sane folks that can’t figure out why anyone would subject themselves to the to the worst weather Mother Nature has to offer for an opportunity to shoot at a duck, but winter time fis...

Well instead of scouting locally many will take advantage of the unbelievable hunting opportunities that Texas coast offers up. When you start talking coastal duck hunting places like Rockport, Port O, and the Laguna Madre automatically come to mind. These areas are well known for producing some of...

  • Choice of tackle makes a difference

    Updated Dec 30, 2014

Twelve year old, Liz, wasn’t speaking at that exact moment, but the look on her face said it all as another big redfish buried the tip of her rod in the water and stripped line much too fast for the drag to be of any use.The rod tip predictably snapped back and the slack line only confirmed what she feared from the moment the big fish zeroed in on her lure. What should have been the highlight of the trip was quickly turning into a better reason to go home rather than continue fishing and further compound her frustration. Her d...

Larry Dierker, former Houston Astro pitching great, club skipper, and television announcer following his playing days had bid on and won the trip, but for one r...
