From my perch on the poling platform I often have plenty of time to think while I push my little boat around the marsh. The standard stuff that goes through every fisherman’s mind usually dominates my thoughts. “Where are the fish?” “Should I change locations?” “Is this the right bait?” Nothing out of the ordinary, just everyday fishing thoughts that happen to come to mind. Plenty of those moments routinely get interrupted by my fishing partner for that day and I snap back t...

Last week’s frigid weather didn’t stop many of the National Football League teams whose playoff future is still up in the air from playing sizzling football. Even our two Lone Star State franchises came up with upset victories with the Dallas Cowboys outlasting the NFL’s best team Philadelphia Eagles 40-36 while the NFL’s worst team Houston Texans surprised the AFC South Division-leading Tennessee Titans 19-14. Although upset victories are great for the morale, in real ti...
After sitting around the house for nearly five hours Saturday without any heat or electricity, I decided to hike around the corner to where the transformer was being worked on. There were a couple of curious onlookers also at the site-- one being an old man with a white beard and the other being a gal who had been jogging and was taking a break. After Entergy told us the problem would be taken care of between noon and 12:30 p.m. and then revised to between 2:00-2:30, I went...

For months the faithful waited in anticipation for opening day and in what seems to be the blink of an eye the 2022-23 duck season is just about gone. With a few weeks to go before the end, many water fowl hunters have resorted to road trips to get that last little fix in before the party’s over. For many hunters the coast has been the destination, especially the Rockport and Port O’ Conner areas since they have been covered up with ducks for most of the season. The stories ab...

The West Orange-Stark Lady Mustangs got their second straight district win Friday, December 16 against the Vidor Lady Pirates. The Lady Mustangs (2-1) defeated Vidor 64-51 at the WOS gym. A somewhat slow start for the Lady Mustangs found them down 5-3 in the opening minutes of the game. Area college football fans who follow the firings and new hirings of head coaches observed two entirely different instances that captured the local media outlets last weekend. On the local scene, the Lamar Cardinals wasted little time (19 days) in finding a new head coach to replaced the fired Blane Morgan, who compiled a 5-23 record in the three seasons he coached the football team. And this time it appears that Athletic Director Jeff O’Malley and Lamar president Dr, Jaime T...
Pardon me for just one moment while I steal a line from a great Texas country music drinking song by Roger Creager “It’s the invisible intoxicant….it’s call Everclear”. Ah, the wonders of clear liquid and what it can do to ones senses. Clear liquid doesn’t have to come in a bottle, be a zillion proof, or cost 10 bucks at the bar to do a number on your senses. The water in your nearest bay during the winter months can easily have the same effect. Catch clear water in your favor...
The 8th grade A-team started off against Bridge City and handled them with ease. Mikayla Locke led in scoring, while Paisley Reeves led in rebounds. The Lady Cats took the win with a final score of 35-13. On Day 2 of the tournament, the Cats took on East Chambers which proved to be a defensive battle. The Lady Cats pressed through, and after half, easily out-scored the Lady Bucs 21-8. The Championship game was next against tournament host Hardin Jefferson. Madison McCormack ha...

The start of December means it is just a few days before the start of the district basketball games for local high school teams. The Orangefield Lady Bobcats in Class 3A actually began their district schedule on Tuesday of this week against the Lionettes at Kountze. The Lady Bobcats play their first district home game against the Kirbyville Lady Wildcats on Friday. Leading up to th...
All of the Houston Texans players and many fans had a big red circle around December 4, 2022 on their calendars since early August when they found out their team would be hosting the Cleveland Browns on that date. What’s so significant about playing a football game against the Browns in NRG Stadium? That’s the day their former first-round pick and producer of many victories—DeShaun Watson—would be able to play in the NFL again after serving an 11-game suspension for conduct...

In every sport there are different levels of accomplishment, different levels of skill. In baseball you have rookie leagues, minor leagues, and then you have the guys in the majors who are at the top of the food chain so to speak. Far too many times in magazines the writers take for granted that everyone out there fishes just like they do. Nothing could be farther from the truth if you just get right down to it. On more than a regular basis I get asked about certain...
Members of the West Orange-Stark Mustangs and the Bridge City Cardinals football teams were selected to the 9-4A Division II All-District team. The names of the players selected as All-District were not to be announced until all the schools in the district were eliminated from the University Interscholastic League state football playoffs. The district champion Silsbee Tigers lost a thrilling triple overtime game 58-56 to the Cuero Gobblers on Friday, December 2. Leading the...
A young Bridge City basketball team took its lumps last season. The Cardinals are more mature now and look to be a playoff contender this season. Last year was a rebuilding campaign for Bridge City after a successful season two years ago. The Cardinals lost five seniors going into last season and played only two juniors, multiple sophomores, and a couple freshmen on the varsity. Coach Randall Robertson analyzed the uphill battle his Cardinals had with a lack of varsity...
