Joe Kazmar, For the Record|Updated Oct 4, 2022

Games This Weekend WEST ORANGE-STARK over HAMSHIRE-FANNETT—The Mustangs finally got that first district victory with hopefully many more to come. This very well could be the start of another long skein of league wins, but it won’t be easy Friday night because it’s on the Longhorns’ home turf. The ‘Stangs just need to continue doing what they did last week at Homecoming against Liberty. LITTLE CYPRESS-MAURICEVILLE over VIDOR—I’m picking this as my Upset Special because with...

  • Bobcats beat Buna to open district

Dan Perrine, For the Record|Updated Sep 27, 2022

Orangefield stormed out of the gate, sagged in the middle, and closed with a big bang in its first district game. The Bobcats defeated the Buna Cougars 28-14 on Friday night at F. L. McClain Stadium in Orangefield. The Bobcats (1-0, 3-2) dominated the first half and enjoyed a 21 point lead with less than five minutes left in the second quarter. The Cougars (0-1, 1-4) took advantage of a turnover early in the third quarter to cut the margin to seven points but could not get...

  • Bobcats play at Anahuac on Friday

Dan Perrine, For the Record|Updated Sep 27, 2022

The district schedule began last week for the Orangefield Bobcats with a win. This Friday Orangefield plays only its second road game of the season at Anahuac against the very good Panthers. The Bobcats took a 21-0 lead against the Buna Cougars and appeared to be on their way to a romp. The Cougars fought back and actually had a tying touchdown called back because of a penalty for an illegal forward pass. A video of the play clearly showed Buna's Jacob Johnson lined up in the...

  • Big guns for small hunters

Capt. Chuck Uzzle, For the Record|Updated Sep 27, 2022

Texas hunters do everything big and that includes purchasing their firearms. Now the bigger is better theory has some merit but not when it comes to smaller hunters such as women or children. Picture this, the moment all hunters prepare for is at hand, the first big buck or giant Canada goose has come in to range and it's time to take the shot. The trigger is pulled and a shot rings out followed closely by a howl of agony from the shooter and a big "oh no" from their hunting...

  • OJH Cross-Country Team members cross finish line

    Updated Sep 27, 2022

The OJH cross-country team took on the Tony Munson Invitational course this weekend. The first to cross the line was Jaxon Agerton with a time of 12:07, which was good enough for the 5th place finish out of 237 runners. Next to cross the finish line was Nate Claussen, who ran a 12:58 for 24th place. Koa Sides would beat his personal record by two whole minutes to earn a new PR of 14:40. Our lone ranger, Kinslee Rush, would get a new PR as well. She ran a 17:19 to earn the...

  • Kaz's Fearless Forecast

Joe Kazmar, For the Record|Updated Sep 27, 2022

Games This Weekend WEST ORANGE-STARK over LIBERTY—I don’t EVER remember the Mustangs losing four games in a row and I’ve been following them since Day One back in 1977. It’s also been a long time since the ‘Stangs finished below the .500 mark. With all that said, I think the Mustangs will be .500 in District 9-4A after Friday night. LITTLE CYPRESS-MAURICEVILLE over SPRING LEGACY SCHOOL—I don’t care if the Battlin’ Bears are playing the Dallas Cowboys Friday night, they are det...

  • Kaz's Korner

Joe Kazmar, For the Record|Updated Sep 27, 2022

It doesn't matter whether it's high school, college or pro football, basic long-range trends can be observed after the first three games of the season. High school and college teams are more difficult to figure because most teams have cupcake opponents during the first month of play. But that's not what happens in the NFL where schedules are figured by factors such as travel distance and future weather conditions in cities where fall weather is extremely hot and humid and weat...

  • Mustangs play homecoming game against Liberty

Dan Perrine, For the Record|Updated Sep 27, 2022

The West Orange-Stark Mustangs started their district games last week at Silsbee hoping to snap a two-game losing streak. The Mustangs had a narrow lead in the second half before the Tigers rallied and won the game. The loss was the first for the Mustangs in a district game since Silsbee beat them in 2009. West Orange-Stark must bounce back this week to have any realistic chance at a district title. Dakarion Judge of the Mustangs started the scoring by stripping a Tiger...

Dan Perrine, For the Record|Updated Sep 27, 2022

The bye week for Little Cypress-Mauriceville is over, and the Bears resume game action on Friday. LCM plays the Legacy Titans on its new artificial turf field at Battlin' Bear Stadium. Coach Eric Peevey believes the Bears had a great week working out on the new field for the first time. "We were able to get on the field. We had some very competitive practices last week which was a great thing. We needed that to get those competitive juices flowing again to get back to playing...

  • OJH Football vs. Buna On September 22nd

    Staff Report|Updated Sep 26, 2022

Last Thursday, the Deweyville Pirates and the Buna Cougars came rolling into F.L. Mclain for a three-game extravaganza. The combined B team took the field first to try and sink the ship of the rival Pirates. The offense struggled early but found traction later on. Mikey Lecea was the lone offensive stand-out, as he easily had over 100 yards rushing and scored the only points for the Bobcats, with a touchdown run and a 2-point conversion. The defense did the best they could but ran out of gas as Deweyville sailed off into the...

  • Fall fishing is for everyone

Capt. Chuck Uzzle, For the Record|Updated Sep 20, 2022

All along the Texas gulf coast the pattern is the same, much anticipated cool fronts on the horizon will signal the frenzy that is fall fishing. Anglers of every description ready themselves with the latest technology and gear in hopes of finding flocks of gulls working over schools of hungry speckled trout and redfish. Shiny fiberglass cruisers masquerading as bay boats are stocked up with an array of tackle that would make most anglers drool with envy. It is the same...

  • Bridge City starts district against the Longhorns

Dan Perrine, For the Record|Updated Sep 20, 2022

Last Friday Bridge City lost more than a football game. The Cardinals had fewer points on the scoreboard when the game ended, but they also had fewer players available for this week's game which is the start of district action. The Bridge City loss to the Lumberton Raiders was a miserable game according to Coach Cody McGuire. "We're just ready to move on. It was a terrible game in all three phases. We lost a lot of kids early, and that had a huge effect on us," McGuire...

  • Kaz's Korner

Joe Kazmar, For the Record|Updated Sep 20, 2022

This has been a weird season for the Houston Astros as far as personal and team statistics are concerned. The Astros are near the bottom of the major leagues as far as their team batting average is concerned, yet at the top in American League victories and starting and relief pitching and near the top in home runs. It's no secret that the team has already qualified for the American League post-season playoffs, but going into Monday's game at Tampa Bay, either one more Astros...

  • Kaz'z Fearless Forecast

Joe Kazmar, For the Record|Updated Sep 20, 2022

Games This Weekend SILSBEE over WEST ORANGE-STARK—The defense that spurred the Mustangs on to win 18 straight district championships and has been one of the top models in the State of Texas for more than 40 years under Dan Hooks and Cornel Thompson, appears to be on vacation this year as it couldn’t stop the area’s best Class 3A team in the final minutes last week, so how can we expect it to even slow down our area’s best 4A team Friday night?? ORANGEFIELD over BUNA—Th...

The Bobcats travelled to Woodville and were beaten decisively by the Eagles 33-7. The loss evens Orangefield's record at 2-2 for the year. The defeat to Woodville was a combination of several factors for Orangefield. The number one factor according to Bobcat Head Coach Josh Smalley is the Eagles are very...
