  • Big guns for small hunters

Capt. Chuck Uzzle, For the Record|Updated Sep 27, 2022

Texas hunters do everything big and that includes purchasing their firearms. Now the bigger is better theory has some merit but not when it comes to smaller hunters such as women or children. Picture this, the moment all hunters prepare for is at hand, the first big buck or giant Canada goose has come in to range and it's time to take the shot. The trigger is pulled and a shot rings out followed closely by a howl of agony from the shooter and a big "oh no" from their hunting...

    Updated Sep 27, 2022

The OJH cross-country team took on the Tony Munson Invitational course this weekend. The first to cross the line was Jaxon Agerton with a time of 12:07, which was good enough for the 5th place finish out of 237 runners. • Fall fishing is for everyone

Capt. Chuck Uzzle, For the Record|Updated Sep 20, 2022

All along the Texas gulf coast the pattern is the same, much anticipated cool fronts on the horizon will signal the frenzy that is fall fishing. Anglers of every description ready themselves with the latest technology and gear in hopes of finding flocks of gulls working over schools of hungry speckled trout and redfish. Shiny fiberglass cruisers masquerading as bay boats are stocked up with an array of tackle that would make most anglers drool with envy. It is the same...

  • Bridge City starts district against the Longhorns

Dan Perrine, For the Record|Updated Sep 20, 2022

Last Friday Bridge City lost more than a football game. The Cardinals had fewer points on the scoreboard when the game ended, but they also had fewer players available for this week's game which is the start of district action. The Bridge City loss to the Lumberton Raiders was a miserable game according to Coach Cody McGuire. "We're just ready to move on. It was a terrible game in all three phases. We lost a lot of kids early, and that had a huge effect on us," McGuire...

  • Kaz's Korner

Joe Kazmar, For the Record|Updated Sep 20, 2022

This has been a weird season for the Houston Astros as far as personal and team statistics are concerned. The Astros are near the bottom of the major leagues as far as their team batting average is concerned, yet at the top in American League victories and starting and relief pitching and near the top in home runs. It's no secret that the team has already qualified for the American League post-season playoffs, but going into Monday's game at Tampa Bay, either one more Astros...

Games This Weekend SILSBEE over WEST ORANGE-STARK—The defense that spurred the Mustangs on to win 18 straight district championships and has been one of the top models in the State of Texas for more than 40 years under Dan Hooks and Cornel Thompson, appears to be on vacation this year as it couldn’t stop the area’s best Class 3A team in the final minutes last week, so how can we expect it to even slow down our area’s best 4A team Friday night?? ORANGEFIELD over BUNA—Th...

Dan Perrine, For the Record|Updated Sep 20, 2022

  • Teal season opens to mixed reviews

    Updated Sep 13, 2022

Saturday morning’s early teal season opener began with plenty of odds stacked against most hunters in our area but that fact did not dampen the enthusiasm associated with the opportunity to shoot ducks. Many local hunters actually began to camp out at some of the local public hunting areas on Thursday in hopes of ensuring a prized location for Saturday morning. I must admit, even though I love to hunt teal that I am not mad enough at them to sleep on the road 2 days before a...

The West Orange-Stark Mustangs suffered a rare loss last week and now must travel to Newton to face the always tough Eagles. This week is the last game before district begins next week for the Mustangs. The size of the opponent is always secondary to West Orange-Stark as the Mustangs play everybody tough regardless of the other team's classification. The Port Neches-Groves Indians are two classifications larger than West Orange-Stark and defeated the Mustangs 26-7 last Friday....

  • Kaz's Fearless Forecast

Joe Kazmar, For the Record|Updated Sep 13, 2022

Games This Weekend NEWTON over WEST ORANGE-STARK-We may be witnessing the end of a long, wonderful era that happens whenever the administration gets involved with the athletic program. Hopefully I'm wrong, but if I'm not, there will be some very unhappy patrons. LITTLE CYPRESS-MAURICEVILLE over HOUSTON KINKAID-The Battlin' Bears appear to be headed in the right direction again this season which should make the other members of District 10-4A shutter in their boots. They...

  • Cardinals face a big challenge in Lumberton

Dan Perrine, For the Record|Updated Sep 13, 2022

The Bridge City Cardinals played an old rival last week and played them well for a half. This week the Cardinals play possibly their toughest opponent so far this season and on the road. The Cardinals stayed close to their cross-county rival the Little Cypress-Mauriceville Bears through the first two quarters on Friday. Unfortunately, the second half just as it did the week before against Buna did not go well for Bridge City. Running back JS Bearden scored sixty-two seconds...

  • Kaz's Korner

Joe Kazmar, For the Record|Updated Sep 13, 2022

There was plenty of excitement in area college football games and even the two NFL franchises in Texas, but in the end of those games no football fans left their respective stadiums happy that their team won-except perhaps the Houston Texan faithful who saw their team play a 20-20 tie they were supposed to lose by more than a touchdown. Things got started late Saturday morning when the Texas Longhorns welcomed Alabama-the nation's No. 1 team and 20-point favorites-into...
