The easy north wind has already begun to work magic on local hunters as they eagerly await the September 1 opener of dove season here in Texas. North Zone hunters will enjoy a few weeks of hunting before those of us south of IH-10 get into the mix of things. In years past the days leading up to the opener have been filled with some goofy weather that always seems to make an appearance before the season starts. For the past several seasons there have been some heavy rains wash...

Final preparations by the West Orange-Stark Mustangs for the new season will continue this week to be ready for the season opener on August 26. Coach Hiawatha Hickman was pleased with the hustle and the running to the ball by the Mustangs in their scrimmage last week against the Woodville Eagles. The game plan was very simple for West Orange-Stark, very vanilla in the words...

Bears' Coach Eric Peevey thought his team played well in the...
This is the time of the year that I dislike the most. First of all, the middle of August has always been referred to as “The Dog Days of Summer.” But more importantly, this is the time that the National Football League stages its exhibition football season. Fans fill the stadiums eager to see a football game, even if it’s not what you paid a premium price to see. Many exhibition game tickets are included in the season ticket packet. I used to use these preseason games to fo...
The Bridge City Cardinals have a final scrimmage in preparation for the start of the new football season. The Cardinals will scrimmage the Woodville Eagles this week. Bridge City had its first scrimmage last week against the Vidor Pirates. This scrimmage was actually a mock four quarter simulated game. Coach Cody McGuire was pleased overall with the job done by the Cardinals in the scrimmage. There were 75 plays on defense so it gave Bridge City a good work out against the...

The Lady Bobcats won the first two games before dropping the next two to the Lady Longhorns and having to clinch the victory by winning the fifth set. Orangefield won 26-24 and 25-17 and needed just one more win to sow-up the match. Hamshire-Fannett rallied taking game three 25-21 and the fourth game 26-24. The Lady Bobcats played a solid deciding game winning 15-5 for...
Local high school football games begin at the end of August. Weather and the ongoing COVID pandemic have postponed or delayed several events and projects connected to the upcoming football season. Inclement weather on Friday, August 5, caused a cancellation of photos to be taken of the Bridge City Cardinal football players that day. Media day as it is called has been rescheduled in Bridge City for Friday, August 12, at Larry Ward Stadium. Work on Battlin' Bear Stadium began...
A week of practices has gone well for the Orangefield Bobcats in preparation for the new football season. This is the start of the eleventh year under Josh Smalley as the head football coach at Orangefield and the kids are buying into the system established by Smalley at the school. The effort by the players has been great and they have been very coachable, but there is still a lot of learning to be done especially by the younger Bobcats. "A lot of young kids especially up...
The winningest program in Texas high school football begins another season this month. The West Orange-Stark Mustangs have won over eighty percent of their games since the school was created in the late 1970s, and there is no plan to stop winning in the near future. Hiawatha Hickman is the new head football coach at West Orange-Stark after serving since 2016 as the defensive line coach and the defensive coordinator under longtime Mustang coach Cornel Thompson. Hickman...
Build it and they will come is a familiar saying that could be adopted by the Little Cypress-Mauriceville Bears football team. A new artificial turf field is being installed at Battlin' Bear Stadium but will not be completed in time for the start of the Bears' football season at the end of August. The field of green being under construction has forced the Bears and Coach Eric Peevey to work out on the practice field located behind the Don Gibbens baseball field. It was a good...
The Bridge City Cardinals came to the first week of practices for the football season ready to work and improve themselves. The Cardinals will strive to be their best as the season progresses. Coach Cody McGuire said after a slow start on the first day the kids rocked and rolled during the rest of the week's practices. "They came out and were physical and were aggressive and worked real hard the first week," McGuire reported. Although the weather may not have been ideal,...
For the majority of upper coast anglers the thought of actually seeing a fish before you cast to it is more of a foreign concept than going to a restaurant that doesn't serve sweet tea, it's just not natural. In the minds of most anglers who fish with me the thought of water with clarity good enough to see fish in is usually reserved for venues farther south or some Carribean island where the white sand is nearly blinding, not the upper coast of Texas or Louisiana. Now don't g...
The Houston Astros and New York Yankees have had the best win-loss percentage in major league baseball since April, especially in the American League, where they both made trades last week that would improve their chances of playing in the World Series when October rolls around. The Astros have been doing most of their winning in the first four months with their pitching—both starting and relieving—while the Yankees have been outscoring their opponents with their big bat...

In Cornel Thompson's final season as the head football coach the Mustangs had another successful year going 11-2, winning their district championship while going undefeated in the district, and advancing to the fourth round of the...
Now unless you live under a rock in a far dark corner of the planet you probably have some sort of idea about how completely fanatical Texas folks are about football. The summer months in our great state are often looked upon with great enthusiasm as thousands of football players begin their preparations for the fall campaign by first trying to beat the Texas heat. The football term “2 a days” refers to the common practice of working out twice a day, usually once in the mor...
The Orangefield Bobcats are preparing for a new football season in a new district and in a new classification. Based on enrollment numbers Orangefield dropped from Class 4A to Class 3A for the next two years. This is the second time in the last five years the Bobcats will play in the lower classification. Orangefield is hopeful of success as the big school in the district, but that is not guaranteed. Last season the Bobcats went 7-4 and tied for second place in their Class 4A...
Little Cypress-Mauriceville got a new head football coach last year. The Bears got a winning attitude last season they hope to continue when the new season starts later this month. Eric Peevey came to Little Cypress-Mauriceville from Beaumont West Brook where he took the Bruins to a Class 6A state championship game in 2018. The Bears were co-district champions, made the Class 4A playoffs, and advanced to the fourth round of the post season in Peevey's first year. The coach cre...

Former West Orange-Stark and Lamar University athlete Jack Dallas of Orange signed a free agent contract last week with the Philadelphia Phillies as a pitcher. He ended his career at Lamar this year by setting a school record for the most saves. His younger brother, Chad, also a pitcher, was drafted last year by the Toronto Blue Jays and is currently playing in the team's minor league farm system. The brothers are the sons of Tony and Nancy Dallas of Orange. Jack went to Lamar...
The Houston Astros appear to be a lead-pipe cinch to make the post-season playoffs and win the American League West Division championship with their 13-game lead in the standings and the second-best record in the league. That’s not what the ultimate goal is by the Aug. 2 trading deadline for third-year General Manager James Click. He wants the whole enchilada—the 2022 World Series ring. Houston is walking away with the division, mainly from its six starting pitchers and sti...
The enthusiasm for volleyball at Little Cypress-Mauriceville is growing. The Lady Bears were a good team last year and should be a strong district contender this coming season. Little Cypress-Mauriceville did not finish as strong as Coach Rhonda Williams hoped the Lady Bears would do. Third place in the district did get the Lady Bears into the post season though. In the first round LCM played a good Liberty team which had defeated the Lady Bears in the first match of last...
