One of the biggest and most intriguing factors that keep fishermen coming back day after day is the process of discovery, figuring out the puzzle so to speak. The task of sifting through all the variables and making sense out of all the factors in order to establish a pattern is what drives many anglers. Unknowingly we all go through the same process every time we fish but without the fanfare. Most of us don't realize we are even doing it, establishing a pattern, but just as...
Anybody that thinks pitching isn’t 75 per cent of the game of baseball, needs to re-think their position on the subject—or take a gander at the American League West Division standings where the Houston Astros are leading by 3½ games and sporting a nifty .625 winning percentage with their 30-18 record in games through Sunday. And the ‘Stroes have been doing most of their winning with their mound prowess, because their hitting with runners in scoring position is practi...
Easily one of the most alluring features of Sabine Lake area is the fact that you can catch so many different species of fish in a relatively small area. The brackish water holds both fresh and saltwater fish in good numbers as well as quality. It’s never uncommon to see a stringer of fish include flounder, redfish, speckled trout, and an occasional really nice largemouth bass. The potential for all these fish to be in the same body of water makes each strike that much more e...

"Be careful what you wish for because you just may get it" is what I was often told as a kid. Things that seem like great ideas at the time will often turn out to be unwanted nuisances that are worse than the original option. For months Texas anglers, myself included, cursed the constant high winds and prayed that they would stop in order to make the bay systems mote user friendly. Well, the winds are showing signs of finally slowing down and with that now the temperatures...
Rabid college football fans in the Lone Star State and Alabama are already looking forward to October 8 when Alabama hosts Texas A&M in a Southeastern Conference grudge match at Bryant-Denny Stadium in Tuscaloosa, Ala. The Crimson Tide is seeking revenge for 41-38 upset victory by the Aggies last Oct. 9 at Kyle Field in College Station. Although the players on both teams have finished their final exams and are looking forward to some summer fun before the grind begins in two...
The Orangefield Bobcats advanced to the fourth round of the state baseball playoffs last week. The Bobcats used an awesome display of offense to overwhelm the Livingston Lions and sweep their best of three series in two straight games. The series was split between two neutral sites both with artificial turf in case of rain. Game 1 was at Port Neches-Groves with Orangefield serving as the home team and the second game was played in Cleveland with the home team being...

I’m not talking about major league baseball, NFL football, the NBA or NHL playoffs, but there are two events coming up this week that are very significant in their respective sports—the second major golf tournament and the second horse race for the Triple Crown. The PGA Championship begins tomorrow at Southern Hill Country in Tulsa while the Preakness Stakes is set for late Saturday afternoon at Pimlico Race Track in Baltimore. But the major golf tournament will be wit...

The slick surface of the lake was disrupted by skipping shrimp and the familiar sound of trout crashing the helpless crustaceans. Each cast with a soft plastic was met the familiar thump of an aggressive fish that thought they were much larger than they really were. One small trout after another continued to hammer the jigs and also continued to be too small. The next logical thought for catching bigger fish was to go to a topwater plug, which usually works well under these...
For some unknown reason society has always been interested in and amused by the misfortunes of others. Television has had countless shows dedicated to "bloopers" and other gaffes made by everyday people doing everyday things and the masses tune in weekly to get another dose of these antics. I'd be willing to bet you most fishermen you know are at least familiar with the Bill Dance blooper videos, a compilation of outtakes and blunders that fishermen can certainly relate to...
Before Saturday’s Kentucky Derby, the sport of horse racing was virtually on oxygen getting ready to perhaps sing its Swan Song. The sport was under intense scrutiny after the industry had been rocked by scandal in recent years, including the disqualification of last year’s Kentucky Derby winner Medina Spirit for failing a post-race drug test after crossing the finish line first. The Medina Spirit disqualification resulted in a horse-doping conspiracy involving trainers and...

Two local teams remain alive in their quest for a state championship with the Bridge City Lady Cardinals and the Orangefield Bobcats sweeping their respective playoff series last week. Both the Lady Cardinals and the Bobcats entered the post season as first seeds having won their district championships. The Bridge City Cardinals baseball team was a number two seed entering...
For the majority of our area students school is almost over for the year and the much anticipated free days of summer are now upon us. This time of the year that is tailor made for taking a youngster fishing. During the school year everyone is confined to schedules that only allow free time on the weekends, which coincidentally is when everyone else is free. The crowds are much larger on the weekends and who knows if the fish have figured out what Saturday and Sunday mean. It...
More than half of the 30 major league baseball teams would be very happy with a .524 winning percentage for the month of April, but not our Houston Astros who finished the strike-shortened month with an 11-10 record. Of course, one must understand the Astros are the defending American League pennant winners and losers in six games to the Atlanta Braves in the 2021 World Series. Houston's record would have been much better if the entire starting lineup was healthy and the bats...
Bridge City volleyball player Harlee Tupper signed on April 26 to play at Southeastern Louisiana University. Tupper played on the Lady Cardinals varsity volleyball team all four of her years at Bridge City. Harlee was first team all-district in her sophomore year at Bridge City before making all-district and district MVP in both her junior and senior seasons. Tupper was chosen the top volleyball player in the area by multiple polls both seasons. In her final year as a Lady Car...
Many fans look at the fortunes of their favorite teams winning and losing as matters of life and death. The Bridge City Cardinals really did have a life or death issue during the last twelve months or so. Junior Shaun Hallman was a starting offensive lineman for the Bridge City football team two seasons ago and a power hitter for the Cardinals' baseball team in 2021. Teammate Draven Marlow this past week identified during Seniors Night that Shaun's two-run homer in last...
Tomorrow will feature the most important National Football League event between February's Super Bowl and September's Opening Day of the 2022 regular season when the first round of the 2022 NFL draft begins. There has been much speculation from both the sports media and the 32 NFL teams themselves about what positions need to be filled for each team. There have been mock drafts galore from every sports publication, radio and television sports talk shows, podcasts and even Face...

I have no idea how it happens, it seems like only a few weeks ago summer was so far away and we were in the midst of a mini winter as successive cool fronts continued to remind us how nice 60 degree weather with zero humidity could be. All that will become a distant memory as we flip the calendar and officially entered the dog days of summer. Welcome back the sweltering heat and humidity so thick you need to breathe through a snorkel just to cope with everyday tasks. Gone are...
The Bridge City Lady Cardinals finished their district schedule as the undefeated District 22-4A softball champions. The Lady Cardinals concluded their regular season April 22 with a tight 3-2 win in ten innings over the third place Lumberton Lady Raiders. The contest was the only game of the week for Bridge City. It was the second extra inning win for the Lady Cardinals (12-0) in district the other one coming in March against the Orangefield Lady Bobcats. Bridge City pitcher...
Ever since West Point graduate Abner Doubleday supposedly invented the sport of baseball, teams have tried to figure out ways to get a leg up on the opposition by trying to find out what that team is trying to do to beat your team. The most popular tactic is by stealing the other team's signals-either the coach's signs to steal a base or for the batter to take a pitch or utilize the hit-and-run, or the catcher's signal for the type of pitch the person on the mound should...
