With the Kansas Jayhawks the only No. 1 seed in this weekend's Final Four, they have to be the favorites to win the 2022 NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament. Right? Not so fast came the reply from many basketball gurus featured on the sports talk shows both on the television and radio early this week. After all, the Jayhawks didn't have to sweat it out at the end of any of their four victories leading up to their semifinal clash against No. 2-seeded Villanova Saturday evening in...
Just about any Texas fisherman who ever wet a line knows that the spring is full of many things, most of which fall into the category of uncertainty and unpredictability. The all time #1 villain is the weather man and his friend the marine forecast, aka "that #$%@ wind"! For plenty of us who take advantage of every season the waders that were used during duck hunts have become your best friend as the gears switch in favor of chasing trophy trout in 60 plus degree water. All bu...

While sports fans were enjoying the second round of the NCAA March Madness basketball tournament last weekend, Houston fans had some madness of their own as they watched two of the city's best players at their respective sport and position decide in less than a 24-hour period to leave town and head north to resume their illustrious careers. What I'm referring to is the fact former quarterback Deshaun Watson-who was rated by most fans as the best quarterback to ever wear a...
One week into the District 22-4A baseball games the race to finish in first place is already heating up. Only two teams out of the seven in the district remain undefeated through the first two games of league action. The Little Cypress-Mauriceville Bears have won both of their first two games outscoring their opponents by a combined seventeen runs. The Bears defeated crosstown rival the West Orange-Stark Mustangs 10-0 on Friday, March 18, at Don Gibbens Field to raise their di...
You ever wonder what a 64 pack of Crayola crayons, 31 flavors of ice cream at Baskin Robbins, or bags of assorted candy have in common? The answer is they offer something for everyone because we all don't have the same taste. If everyone did things exactly like everyone else then life would be ridiculously boring and mundane. It's choices and options that give each individual the opportunity to succeed and sometimes those options and choices are a little different than what...
March 16 officially marks the beginning of the 2022 National Football League season, enabling teams to sign the free agents they have pursued since last month and to officially get the signature on new contracts or trades that were agreed upon verbally or with a handshake in the last few weeks. Last week was a busy one for three franchise quarterbacks who either agreed to a new contract, the dollar figures from a verbal trade or—in the Houston Texans’ case—a grand jury...
The tournaments are over and district play started this week for the local high school baseball teams. The girls are a week ahead of the boys as the district softball games began on Tuesday, March 8 and continue to be played this week. The Bridge City Lady Cardinals have started strong winning their first two district games. The opener was against West Orange-Stark, and the Lady Cardinals' Kaydence Corkran was the starting pitcher shutting out the Lady Mustangs 20-0 for...
Ever since I was able to gurgle the word baseball as a toddler, it has been my first love. My father was a very good baseball player in high school, but when he was ready to move up to the next level, the Depression hit and he had to find a job to help out his family. But that didn't stop my father's love for the game. He played baseball on weekends for whoever needed a pitcher, including the Sons of Italy, who merely stuck an "I" at the end of his last name and gave him a...
In all honesty this has to be one of my absolute most favorite times of the year, that transition from winter into spring when the weather starts to cooperate and the fishing gets a jump start. March is a true "transition" month as we begin to see some new patterns emerge and become more consistent. As long as we don't get too many of those blustery spring winds the outlook for everything from the gulf to the Sabine river will be on the good side. The folks who have been dying...

Wade Phillips, son of the former NFL coach Bum Phillips, was in attendance to present the ring to Peevey. Like I said when I accepted the award, Co...
Harrison Gauthier broke a 48 year old pole vault record at the Orangefield Bobcat Relays that was held on February 24th. Bridge City High School's Raymond (Bubba) Ridley held the previous pole vault record of 14'6" since 1974. Gauthier, a senior at Bridge City High School, now holds the new school record of 15'. The 2022 track season has just begun and many more meets are to come. We look forward to seeing what Gauthier will accomplish this year....
The LCM High School fishing team duo of Jacob Longlois and Tanner Stewart put a stranglehold on Toledo Bend this past weekend as they doubled up for victories on both Saturday and Sunday. The unusual circumstances where tournaments were held on back to back days was a result of rescheduled event from January being fished after the regularly scheduled event on Saturday. Longlois and Stewart posted a winning weight of 20.99 pounds on Saturday for their first win of the weekend....

A crowd of around 150 invited guests were on hand Saturday afternoon at West Orange-Stark High School for the dedication of the school's brand-new Strength and Conditioning Center. The modern complex, which would make most college athletic directors and head coaches green with envy, was named in honor of retired head coach Cornel Thompson, who not only coached football at the school for nearly 50 years, but also attended the school when it was known as the West Orange High...
Orangefield will be dropping in classifications next season, but this year the Bobcats hope to remain in the lofty perch they achieved last season in baseball. The Orangefield Bobcats were the district baseball champions in 2021. A 10-2 record earned the Bobcats first place in their very competitive district. Orangefield was playing its best ball of the season as the district games wrapped up and advanced four rounds into the post season before being eliminated by Rusk in a...
The West Orange-Stark Mustangs hope to be competitive this season in baseball. The Mustangs will be very young though with not a lot of experience coming back from last year's team. Last season West Orange-Stark had five really good seniors to help lead the Mustangs. Unfortunately, it was a disappointing year for the Mustangs as they did not make the post season. Coach Sergio Espinal will guide the Mustangs again through this season. He has a very young team with no seniors...
The Bridge City Cardinals should rebound from a frustrating season a year ago. The Cardinals will look to regain their perch atop the district standings that they have achieved 26 times in the school's great history of baseball. A third place finish in the district last year can be traced to Bridge City losing five league games in extra innings. Those close losses were tough mentally for the Cardinals, but they learned from it, grew from it, and they still battled to make the...

A new season has begun for the Bridge City Lady Cardinals softball team. The outlook is positive with a good group of young ladies returning this year at Bridge City. Last year was a very good one for Bridge City. The Lady Cardinals did not really finish the district where they wanted to, but they did make the playoffs. An early exit was no fault of the Lady Cardinals as they played eventual state champion Liberty in the first round and gave the Lady Panthers as close a...
