  • First time for a lifetime

Capt. Chuck Uzzle, For the Record|Updated Nov 16, 2021

Ask anyone who hunts or fishes about how they got started in the sport or what was the first thing they caught or killed and I'll bet you they can recite all the details about the experience without hesitation, because that's how important and memorable those times are. I can guarantee you that I shot a coffee can full of pellets into a giant red oak in the back yard of my grandfather's, Olin Mahfouz, house before I killed my first squirrel but I was as proud of that as I...

  • Whooping Cranes Are Making Their Way to the Texas Coast

    Updated Nov 9, 2021

AUSTIN - With the first sightings of iconic, endangered whooping cranes along the Texas coast being reported, the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD) is reminding Texans to be on the lookout for these impressive birds as they move through the state. Whooping cranes are the tallest, rarest birds in North America. Currently, there is a population of around 506 individuals. Thanks to coordinated conservation efforts, whooping cranes are slowly returning from the brink of e...

  • Local teams ready for bi-district

Tommy Mann Jr, For the Record|Updated Nov 9, 2021

It was a great end to the regular season of high school football as four of our five Orange County schools booked trips for the post-season and three of those teams earning outright or shares of district titles. Deweyville also clinched a playoff spot, and now the real fun starts. The No. 4 state-ranked West Orange-Stark Mustangs (8-1, 6-0) earned a 12th straight district title this past Friday night with a 42-0 victory over the Bridge City Cardinals. It was also the Mustangs...

  • Kaz's Fearless Forecast

    Joe Kazmar|Updated Nov 9, 2021

High School Playoff Games This Week WEST ORANGE-STARK (8-1) over La MARQUE (4-6)--7:30 p.m. Thursday at Randall Reed Stadium in New Caney-This used to be a classic battle 20 years ago when the winner of this game usually got to the regional finals. But in tomorrow's meeting between these two teams, the district champion Mustangs are meeting the fourth-place team and should take care of business quite handily. LITTLE CYPRESS-MAURICEVILLE (8-2) over PALESTINE (5-5)-7:30 p.m....

  • Kaz's Korner

    Joe Kazmar|Updated Nov 9, 2021

The Houston Astros attained nearly all of the goals they set for the team before spring training began last February EXCEPT winning the 2021 World Series. They were the preseason favorites to whip through the American League West Division which they did. They were picked by most to win the American League Championship Series which they did. However, they were picked to win the World Series over the Atlanta Braves, which they didn’t accomplish mainly because they Braves had a...

  • There is a lot to like right now

Capt. Chuck Uzzle, For the Record|Updated Nov 9, 2021

I would like to go on record as suggesting that we make some sort of holiday out of opening weekend of hunting season, give everyone the following Monday off to enjoy one of the greatest events in Texas. This past weekend kicked off the general hunting season in our great state and to say we could not have asked for better conditions would be an understatement. Absolutely "chamber of commerce" weather greeted hunters all over the state and for many it was the perfect set up...

  • OJH District Champions 7th grade Volleyball & 8th grade Football

    Staff Report|Updated Nov 9, 2021

Orangefield Junior High is home to two district champions! The 7th grade volleyball team ended their season with a 5-1 record to become Co-District Champions. The 8th grade football team defeated Hardin Jefferson to claim the District Championship title, while also remaining undefeated for the second season in a row. Orangefield I.S.D. is extremely proud of these two teams and the hard work they put in during their seasons!...

  • Kaz's Korner

Joe Kazmar, For the Record|Updated Nov 2, 2021

Every year during either the World Series or the Super Bowl, many trivial stories are either written or talked about the fallacies of the sport in season and what to do to make it more “politically correct.” The most popular topic at this time of the year is the usual complaint that any team whose mascot has some kind of Native American connotation MUST be changed. One group of dissenters actually did sell their bill of goods to major league baseball’s long-standing Cleveland...

  • Kaz's Fearless Forecast

Joe Kazmar, For the Record|Updated Nov 2, 2021

Games This Week WEST ORANGE-STARK over BRIDGE CITY—The Mustangs are trying to finish District 10-4A-II with a perfect 6-0 mark but must not look ahead to next week’s opening round of the state playoffs. Head Coach Cornel Thompson is pretty adept at keeping his players focused on the game at hand and not anything in the future. The Cards have been steadily improving, but need a monster game to consider an upset. LITTLE CYPRESS-MAURICEVILLE over SPLENDORA—The Battlin’ Bears are...

  • Teams to secure playoff seeds this week

Tommy Mann Jr, For the Record|Updated Nov 2, 2021

This is the final week of the district play and the regular season, and it all comes down to this week for playoff positioning. Most of our local teams have secured a trip to the Bi-District round, but many of those teams are now looking to solidify the best seeding possible with victories this week. The No. 4 state-ranked West Orange-Stark Mustangs (7-1, 5-0) have clinched a 12th consecutive district title and are coming off a bye week just in time for the final district game against a scrappy Bridge City Cardinals team....

  • Dickie Colburn "a guide's guide"

Capt. Chuck Uzzle, For the Record|Updated Nov 2, 2021

Anybody from our part of the world who fishes has in some way been influenced by the man everyone referred to as "Dickie", he cut a wide path and will forever be remembered for his exploits both on and off the water. I can honestly say his influence on my life was a big reason for many of the good things that have happened to me personally and professionally. As a young aspiring guide, I clung to his every word, from his weekly column in The Record Newspapers, on the...

  • OJH Football vs. Hamshire Fannett

    Staff Report|Updated Nov 2, 2021

Thursday night, the Shorthorns from Hamshire Fannett came to town to take on our Orangefield fighting Bobcats. The 7th grade started the night off, looking for a spark to get them off of their current four-game losing streak. The offense took the field first and looked like they were going to start early, but soon found a tough defense waiting for them. Carson Gonzales and Elijah Jones ran the ball hard, but they were never allowed to break free for any long runs. Cylan Grange...

  • Youth Weekend important for many reasons

Capt. Chuck Uzzle, For the Record|Updated Oct 26, 2021

One of perhaps the most anticipated hunting days of the year is upon us; Saturday morning starts off the annual youth hunting weekend in Texas. Young hunters and adults alike look forward to this very special weekend for a variety of reasons. For many young hunters this is their opportunity to take center stage and reap the benefits of all the practice and preparation they have been through during the off season. The trips to the range, the work at the hunting lease, or...

  • Local teams look to clinch post season trips

Tommy Mann Jr, For the Record|Updated Oct 26, 2021

Two weeks remain in district play for our local football teams, and there is still plenty on the line for each team as all six could potentially make the post season. However, each team needs to take care of business this week before looking ahead. The No. 4 state-ranked West Orange-Stark Mustangs (7-1, 5-0) pummeled district rivals the Liberty Panthers this past Friday 73-7 and the score probably could have been much worse. Mustangs running back Elijah Gales set the all-time...

  • Kaz's Fearless Forecast

    Joe Kazmar|Updated Oct 26, 2021

Games This Week LITTLE CYPRESS-MAURICEVILLE over LIVINGSTON—The Battlin’ Bears looked really good when they had to Friday night at Lumberton, edging past the Raiders 33-31 and taking sole command of second place behind undefeated Vidor in District 10-4A-II. The visiting Lions are only a game behind the Bears and should treat this game Friday night as their “Super Bowl”. BRIDGE CITY over LIBERTY—The Cardinals battled Orangefield all the way down to the final gun before lo...

  • Right Bait At The Right Time

Capt. Dickie Colburn For The Record|Updated Oct 26, 2021
    1

I was walking out the gate at the end of a recent junior varsity game when a young man called out my name. He was already asking a question as he approached which was of no use since I now strain just to hear a train whistle. “I would like to ask you something,” he said in a much louder and clearer voice. “I have these two soft plastic tails that are my favorites, but the trout aren’t biting them. Are they the wrong size or wrong color or what?” I don’t know how many high school youngsters are walking around with plastic tro...

  • Kaz's Fearless Forecast

Joe Kazmar, For the Record|Updated Oct 19, 2021

Games This Week WEST ORANGE-STARK over LIBERTY—The Mustangs are well on their way to another district championship, but must not divert their attention from the ultimate goal of continuing to play solid football. Orangefield played a great first half last week, but the Mustangs’ depth finally took over after the intermission. The Panthers will come to Dan Hooks Stadium Friday night with one thought in mind—upset the Mustangs. WO-S must avert a letdown. LITTLE CYPRE...

Joe Kazmar, For the Record|Updated Oct 19, 2021

After writing sports for six decades, it’s plain for me to see how one visualizes the sporting event being covered. Is the offense good or is the defense bad? Is the team really hitting well or is the opponent’s pitching poor? Get the message? I happened to see an article written for Sunday’s Boston Globe by a nationally prominent veteran sports writer who can be seen on ESPN most any day. He was analyzing Game 2 Saturday night in Houston that began with two grand slam home...

  • Local football teams making stretch run for playoffs

Tommy Mann Jr, For the Record|Updated Oct 19, 2021

The 2021 football season in Orange County continues to be one for the record books, as all five teams remain in contention for playoff spots and have a combined 25-9 record through eight weeks. The No. 4 ranked West Orange-Stark Mustangs (6-1, 4-0) handled business this past Friday evening with a 27-7 victory over the Orangefield Bobcats, despite a weather delay and temporary power outage to some of the F.L. McClain Stadium lights. Elijah Gales added another 170 yards rushing...

  • Numbers, Favorable Conditions Could Provide Hunters with a Good Season

    Staff Report|Updated Oct 19, 2021

AUSTIN – With millions of ducks in the Central Flyway and promising conditions in many parts of the state, Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD) biologists suggest these factors could indicate a good waterfowl season is ahead for Texas Hunters. For the second straight year, the May Breeding Waterfowl Survey was cancelled due to COVID-19 concerns in both the United States and Canada. Instead, TPWD biologists largely relied on fellow biologists in the breeding grounds of Canada and the United States prairie states to h...
