For a long time I always equated the best time of the year with the full moon in October, which coincidentally happens this week. For all intents and purposes summer is now in the rear-view window and those nasty 90-degree days should be nothing but a memory. Occasionally we get a reminder from Mother Nature that we are never far from crazy weather but judging from the forecast I'd have to say we may be safe for a few days so get ready to enjoy everything associated with this...
Jackson Hall, son of Sammy and Candi Hall, was fishing Sabine Lake last weekend with his dad when he caught this monster all by himself....
AUSTIN— Quail season begins statewide Oct. 30 but outside of South Texas, bobwhite and scaled quail populations continue to their long, slow road to recovery following several years of drought. As such, hunting opportunities and success will vary across the state. Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD) experts say that during the annual Quail Roadside Survey period in August, which consists of biologists traveling more than 3,300 miles, male Bobwhite quail could be heard calling regularly during morning drives, but a...
Teams are positioning themselves for a run at district titles and the playoffs, and games this week will go a long way in helping resolve those questions with two huge matchups featuring four Orange County teams. To show how successful the 2021 football season has been thus far, all five Orange County teams have a combined record of 23-6 through seven weeks. The No. 4 ranked West Orange-Stark Mustangs (5-1, 3-0) will be on the road this week to face the feisty Orangefield...
My wife Susan informed me right in the middle of the high-scoring Texas-Oklahoma game that she was going to take her afternoon nap. “How can you leave such an exciting game like this?” I asked her. “Texas is going to lose,” came her reply. “How can you sit here in front of the television for over three hours cheering for the Longhorns and out of the blue say Texas will lose when it’s not even the fourth quarter and Texas has a comfortable 41-23 lead?” I asked completely pu...
This past weekend, our OJH Bobcats competed in the District Cross Country Meet at Claiborne Park. The Lady Bobcats were led by Christa Kyle, who was able to snag a medal in the ninth place slot. Strong performances from Braylie Moore, Tyia McKnight, Mollie Meyer, Johanna Lieby, and Maddison Trammell led the Lady Bobcats to a third-place finish in the district. Awesome job girls! The OJH boys were up next, and they were ready to compete for the district title. Seventh-grader,...
Games This Week WEST ORANGE-STARK over ORANGEFIELD—The Mustangs “No-Name” defense had better be ready to stop the Bobcats’ potent ground game, because it is a good one. However, the ‘Stangs appear to have all their ducks in a row as they march toward another district championship. The winner of this intra-county fracas will have sole possession of first place in District 11-4A-II. LITTLE CYPRESS-MAURICEVILLE over VIDOR—It looks like the Battlin’ Bears are jumping out o...
I am assuming it could best be compared to the weekend golfer that has already exceeded 100 strokes and is yet to even tee off on the 18th hole. His goal at that point has been lowered to simply finishing a miserable morning and selling his clubs. He then somehow magically birdies number 18 and suddenly can’t wait to play tomorrow! Larry Mosely asked if I would like to catch a few slot reds he’d found on the north end of the lake and he didn’t have to ask twice. Not surpr...
BCMS hosted the HJ Hawks in their home opener Thursday night. The 7th grade red team lost 24-6. The offense was led by Hudson Hoffman (touchdown run) and Bryce Breeden. The 7th grade team falls to 1-3 on the season and 0-2 in district. The 8th grade red team defeated the Hawks 34-12. Four different players scored the five Cardinal touchdowns on the night. Slade Herman and Hunter Ford had touchdown receptions, while Austin Frederick and Abraham Munguia (2) had touchdown runs. The offensive and defensive lines did a great job...
Monday, our Lady Bobcats traveled to Little Cypress to take on the Lady Cubs. We had a phenomenal fanbase and appreciate all the encouragement brought by our Bobcat Family! The 7th-grade B-team started off the night with Jaelyn Leibold dominating the service line, delivering nine straight points to put the Cubs on their heels. Our Bobcats kept the pressure on them with the help of Kyleigh Sowell, who had great attacks, as well. Lainey Maricle, with her serves and successful back row attacks, proved to be too much for the...

Another opening weekend for Texas bowhunters has come and gone and the again the weather man is at the front of the conversation. Saturday morning started off as good as you could hope for this time of year with slightly cooler temperatures and light winds that made it almost feel like fall. Most years it seems the first good push of cold air always happens a week before the season opens only to give way to the heat for opening day. This was definitely not the case as it was b...
Some local football teams have already been facing the heat of district battle for a couple of weeks now, while others begin district play this Friday night. Regardless of the situation, all teams have their collective sights set on a victory this Friday and a trip to the playoffs in November. The West Orange-Stark Mustangs (4-1) are doing what they do well and that is use a stubborn, punishing defense to hold opposing offenses in check and an offense determined to put points...
It's always great going into the playoffs on a roll. And that's how the Houston Astros will be tomorrow at Minute Maid Park when they play Game One in the best-of-five American League Divisional Series playoffs against the Chicago White Sox. Home-field advantage was quite a tussle as both teams went into the final week of the regular season battling for that honor, which gives the team with the best won-loss record the privilege of starting the first two playoff games at...
Games This Week WEST ORANGE-STARK over SILSBEE—After getting off to an unusually slow start this season, the Mustangs appear to be on their usual course at this time of the season. But they will be hosting the Silsbee Tigers, a team a few people (idiots) picked to win District 11-4A-II. The Tigers did beat a former state champion three weeks ago, but were upset by Orangefield in the district opener the following week while basking in their glory. HUFFMAN over LITTLE C...
“No excuses for not joining us,” was a rude way to open a phone conversation. “We are driving over Monday or Tuesday and prove to you that the trout bite is better than you have been reporting,” announce David Simon of Pearland. “Johnny caught and released two trout over four pounds somewhere around Garrison’s last Thursday and that was good enough for us to hold our first mini-tournament in over a year,” he stated. I agreed to fish with them and the field grew to a whopping...
Tuesday night, the Bobcats took the show on the road to Vidor, and the rain stopped just long enough to get in all three games. The B-team had another great showing and came very close to getting their first victory of the season, with the help of several beautiful throws by Seth Smith. In the end, the Cats tied 0-0 with the Pirates. The defense had another shutout, which was led by Cane Ritchey and Kellen Hawthorne who kept the Pirates at bay all evening long. The offense was led by Emmanuel Zepeda, again, rushing for close...

OLD COUNTS FOR SOMETHING “Out with the old and in with the new!” That time tested adage is worthy of a little closer scrutiny when applied to fishing! Graphite rods, low profile reels, electronics that take the guess work out of locating fish and high performance boats that can handle the roughest conditions are just a few of the innovations that have made us all better fishermen. I cannot, however, say the same thing about both fresh and saltwater lures. When I was smitten wi...
On Thursday, the OJH Bobcats were looking to have a big night; kicking off their Homecoming week with three games against the Silsbee Tigers. The team started off the festivities quickly but soon fizzled out losing 30-0. It was a tough night for these Bobcats, but they never gave up and fought hard until the end. There were a few bright spots on the offensive side of the ball, as Seth Smith took control of the football and showed off his arm with a 30-yard pass to Devin...
As the days grow shorter and the temperatures becomes slightly more tolerable it is plain to see that fall and hunting season are just around the corner. For local hunters, the first taste of hunting season came in the form of the opening of teal season which was followed shortly by the south zone opener for dove hunters. Wing shooters and water fowlers aside, the most anticipated event here at home as well as all over the state will be the opening of deer season. On October 2...
It’s almost impossible to project how the 32 National Football League teams will fare for the 2021 season after only two games, but it’s much easier seeing where many of the franchises are headed after two weeks. Everybody and their brother know where the Houston Texans will be after the season ends in early January—in front of their televisions watching the good teams compete for the Super Bowl during the playoffs. They lost their first game of the season 31-21 at Cleve...
Games This Week WEST ORANGE-STARK over HAMSHIRE-FANNETT—Two of the better teams in District 11-4A-II are opening up league play where the games really count. The Longhorns come to Dan Hooks Stadium with a nifty 3-1 pre-district record and should give the Mustangs all they can handle as the defend their district championships. LITTLE CYPRESS-MAURICEVILLE over HOUSTON KINKAID—The Battlin’ Bears need this game and next week’s meeting with Jasper to get ready for District 10-4A-I...
Cooler days and lighter winds have contributed to more “catching”, both in Sabine Lake and up at Toledo Bend. Even when salinity, water clarity and good tide changes all line up on Sabine Lake, there is still no substitute for light winds. Fishing where you “want to fish” rather than where you “have to fish”, is a critical factor regardless of conditions. The best bite in the world is useless when white caps are rolling across the flooded grass you hoped to fish. And, while...
Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD) biologists say that 2021-22 is expected to be a white-tailed deer season for the books. Last year, the overall white-tailed deer population was estimated to be 5.4 million deer. While that estimate is down from the previous two years, TPWD biologists say that if fawn recruitment predictions hold true this season, coupled with good carryover of deer from last hunting season, hunters and landowners can expect to see an increase in the...
