The Museum of the Gulf Coasts Presents

Whether it’s a day trip, a weekend get-away or a family vacation, Americans have a fascination with travel. Since the early 20^th century, recreational travel has increased along with advances in technology, communication and modern modes of transportation. For example, the development of America ’s interstate highway system in the 1950s made family vacationing easier and more accessible. Since then, television and the internet have encouraged Americans to explore the world around them.

As southeast Texans begin to make plans for their summer vacations, the Museum of the Gulf Coast will host a special temporary exhibition exploring travel from the turn-of-the-century to the present.

Destination Anywhere: How We Travel will be on view in the Museum’s Dunn Gallery for twelve weeks beginning Sunday, March 16.

On view through June 8, 2008, the exhibition will appeal to children and adults alike with a wide variety of objects from the Museum’s permanent collection such as steamer trunks, postcards, maps, tickets and travel souvenirs as well as loans from the southeast Texas community including luggage, movie cameras and a 1957 Ford Fairlane.

The exhibition will focus on three aspects of travel: Getting There, Being There and Remembering Where You’ve Been.

The Museum will host a free opening event for Destination Anywhere on Sunday, April 6 from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. The event will include a classic car display hosted by the local chapter of American Car Enthusiasts and a chance for visitors to win an East Texas excursion for two.
