Hometown News For Orange County, Texas
Lamar State College-Orange and the Ambassadors of the Greater Orange Area Chamber of Commerce have partnered to present a valuable course, “Meeting Essentials,” to the community. “Meeting Essentials” is designed to teach standard rules of order when conducting and attending a meeting.
“Meeting Essentials” introduces participants to the basics of running and participating in meetings such as a board of directors meetings, fundraising meetings for non-profits or a church or governmental bodies. Learn the process and use of agendas and minutes; the defined roles and responsibilities of key members; the importance of leadership and committees; taking actions such as motions, debates and voting and using Robert’s Rules of Order.
General Henry M. Robert created Roberts Rules of Order in 1876 when he adapted the U.S. House of Representatives rules of procedure for the use of ordinary group meetings.
The instructor, J. David Derosier, is the CEO of Cell Block Technologies and serves as an Ambassador for Greater Orange Area Chamber of Commerce. Mr. Derosier is a graduate of the Leadership: Cape Cod program, and was chair of the Community Leadership Institute of Cape Cod from 1998-2001. He worked closely with the Leadership Ottawa program from 2002-2005 in Canada.
The next “Meeting Essentials” class will be held on Tuesday, March 25 from 10:30-Noon in the Wilson Building at Lamar State College-Orange. The course fee is $20 and includes an easy-to-use, commonsense approach to rules for group leadership, Parliamentary Procedure at a Glance by O. Garfield Jones. A follow-up mock “town meeting” workshop will be held on Tuesday, April 29. It will provide an opportunity to practice your parliamentary procedure skills.
