PONTIFF’S PERSONALITY SHINES THROUGH IN NYC Pope Benedict XVI celebrated mass before a loud jubilant crowd at Yankee Stadium Sunday before ending his six-day tour in the United States.

I watched the mass on CNN. I used the bathroom twice and wondered about the bladders of the people in attendance.

The mass, for Catholics and non-Catholics, lasted two and one-half hours.

The Pope’s visit was notable for its acts of contrition to conscience and its appeals for humanity and peace.

He took head-on the scandal with Catholic priests and pedophiles.

Benedict spoke of being ‘deeply ashamed.’ No words of mine could describe the pain and harm inflicted by such abuse.” He met with many of the victims.

The Pope’s Ground Zero visit also was moving and meaningful for thousands lining nearby streets.

It’s a great gesture that the Pope came to the U.S. It was a Papal visit to remember.

Right now this country can use all the religion it can get.

*****Tuesday is election primary day in Pennsylvania.

Sen.

Hillary Clinton needs a good victory.

She’s really our best hope but it’s a big stretch for her to get there.

The press is doing all they can to drive her out.

Four years ago we said if Bush was re-elected, the middle class would be pushed down and the poor would suffer.

Today those on the bottom rung are giving up buying medicine to afford gasoline.

We are in a box.

For Sen.

McCain to be elected he will have to give ‘Big Oil’ a seat at the table to do like they did with Bush and Cheney, that is to help write the energy policy.

No telling what direction Obama would take us but we may not have a choice.

Hang in there Hillary.

TURNING BACK THE HANDS OF TIME 30 YEARS Ago-1978 Bridge City students competing in various UIL and sports events, Jeff Jones, a junior and Shelly Pate, sophomore, both won first place awards in speaking events.

Lori Broussard, Christine Miller and Paula Pearson made the tennis quarterfinals in tournament play.

Jamie Jackson was the speaker.

*****Lila Stone, Barbara Wilkerson, Norma Hock, Jerry Neely, Jo Ann Clark and Mrs. Lloyd Gray host coffee for Judge Peter Runnels at the Wayside Inn.*****The nicest body running around town belongs to Judy Wyatt.

She had it on display at the ‘Challenge of the Sexes’ track meet to raise funds for the Bridge City/Orangefield Community Center.

*****News around the courthouse is that Lonnie Jim Wallace’s wife Pat is pregnant and they are expecting their first-born in late October.

*****Marty Conway was the speaker at Lamar Mid-Management Association meeting.

She didn’t win but is often in the news.

We haven’t seen him in 30 years so that should make him at least 60+.)*****Shelly Pate, daughter of Sue and H.D., is the winner of the Gibson Girl contest.

Judges selected the contestant most representative of Charles Dana Gibson’s ideal woman.

Gibson created the model for all well-bred young ladies of the period, cool, poised and intelligent.

Shelly was crowned in the center of Parkdale Mall.

(Editor’s note: Shelly now lives in Beaumont and I believe is the mother of two children.) A FEW HAPPENINGS Can you believe one of the worse governors Texas ever had, Rick Perry, has announced he will seek a third term.

Rick, along with Tom DeLay and Tom Craddick engineered two redistricting plans that hold rural Texas hostage, splitting Orange County in two parts.

One part of the county is in with Lumberton, a Republican stronghold, and the other part with downtown Beaumont and Port Arthur, giving no chance for East Orange County to elect their own state representative.

The county has a good shot to capture a Democratic seat with Vidor’s Larry Hunter in the race.

Rep.

Mike Hamilton has in the past claimed Vidor but Hunter is very popular in that area.

As for our Congressional District, like the rest of South East Texas, our representative is from the Houston area and our state senator from the Woodlands.

Perry has gutted us in the worse way but we are not alone.

Houston, Dallas and San Antonio areas now control all of rural Texas.

I’d crawl to the polls to vote against him.

We need a Democratic governor but if Sen.

Kay Bailey Hutchison runs, if she doesn’t again lose her nerve, she will win in the primaries and be hard to beat in the general election.

*****Over three decades the large ‘Harrington’s Pharmacy’ sign on Texas Avenue has been a landmark.

Last week the sign came down and was replaced by the ‘Family Pharmacy’ sign.

The store is now owned by the Haney family.

Good people, good operators.

Doug Harrington, who has served the community for all those years, will be retiring the last Thursday in May. He and Regina plan to sell their home on Hwy.

62 and move to their Crockett area farm until they can build in Spring, Texas.

Their daughter Britanie is getting married June 15.

She and her husband will live in Spring.

Brittany is Regina’s only child and mom wants to be near her.

*****This Monday, April 21, marked San Jacinto Day.

It went almost unnoticed.

Sam Houston beat Santa Anna, making Texas a republic.

2 Rob Strause, who will work with Judge Roy Derry Dunn and Mark Phillpot, who has the prettiest judge, Ms.

Janice Menard.

The ‘Bunch’ hopes they will join them often.

This week the Lunch Bunch will dine at Van Choate’s Tuffy’s and next week they will be back at Robert’s.

I tell you that now because our paper will not be out until Wednesday.

*****Last week Mr. and Mrs. Wilson ‘King’ Dunn celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary.

That may not be a record but it’s a damn good average that few of us will ever reach.

A great salt-of-the-earth couple, who has given much of themselves to the betterment of their community.

We pray for their well being and God’s blessings.

*****Penny Pate Rigney, husband Ross and two limos full of Lake Charles folks took the grand tour to Abbeville, Roy’s hometown.

They loved the town and enjoyed all the great food at several restaurants.

They traveled Highway 14 from Lake Charles to Lake Arthur, Gueydan, Kaplan and the historical, unique French town with two squares.

They vow to return.

*****I’ve been keeping up with some of what is going on with the FKDS polygamist members at Zion Ranch in El Dorado, Texas.

A sad situation any way you look at it.

Four hundred children separated from mom or several moms plus the mothers worrying about the children.

The male polygamists seem to have the best of it.

One guy’s seven wives appeared on television.

There wasn’t a five in the bunch, mostly threes.

No outstanding choices.

Surely they are bound to have a few eights and nines hidden somewhere in there.

Those I saw are ugly but not a heavy one in the bunch.

*****We understand that St. Henry’s priest, Father Jim McClintock, will be leaving in late June to study in Rome.

He is not expected to return here.

Cow Bayou gossip is that he may end up at Crystal Beach but that may not be so.

*****Sometime ago we wondered what had become of Terry Burns.

Cecil hasn’t advertised with us lately but that’s ok.

Buying locally is more important, even though we feel Cecil’s two locations are missing the best advertising media in this market.

We reach more people than all the other newspapers combined.

At a much lower cost.

CAJUN STORY OF THE WEEK Agnes Boudreaux went to see lawyer Asa Leblanc bout getting a divorce from Odis ‘Tee-Boy’ Boudreaux.

Lawyer Leblanc say, ‘Well Mrs. Boudreaux, so you want a divorce?” Miss Agnes answer, “Sho do.” Da lawyer questioned his client, “Tell me bout it, do you have a grudge?” “Oh no, we only got a carporch,” Miss Agnes answer.

Lawyer Leblanc tried again, “Well, den does Odis beat you up?” “No, no,” Agnes said looking puzzled, “I’m always da first out of bed.” Lawyer Leblanc tried again, “Well, does ‘Tee-Boy go in for unnatural, connubial practices?” Agnes said, “Well, he plays the guitar but I don’t tink he knows anyting bout da connubial.” Leblanc says, “Miss Agnes, wat I’m trying to find out are wat grounds you have.” Agnes respond, “Bless you, we live in a small house, we don’t even got a window box much less grounds.” Da lawyer in considerable exasperation axe, “Wat is ‘Tee-boy’s’ IQ?” “Well, Agnes answer, “I tink he can see pretty good yeah.” Da lawyer Leblanc says, “Miss Agnes, you need a reason dat da court can consider.

Wat is da reason for you seeking dis divorce, hanh?” “Oh, well,” Said Agnes, “It’s because Tee-boy him can’t hold and intelligent conversation.” C’EST TOUT Well, I’ve come to the end for another week.

The ‘Bucket Farm’ was glad to get the little rain Friday but we could use some more, the gardens have not taken off like they should.

I understand however, that in a couple of weeks the city of Bridge City will again hold their Saturday farmers market and we will let you know for sure as soon as Councilman David Rutledge gives us the word.

*****Something people really need to think about is that this area has severe drainage problems.

A position on the Drainage District Board is something to take very seriously.

It’s some trouble to vote early because it entails a trip to the Drainage District office.

Early voting starts April 28, Election Day is May 10.

Who we elect to the Drainage Board is very important.

Since no other elections are taking place few people will make the effort. As far as I know Bridge City has never had a resident on the board yet everything flows through Bridge City on its way to the Gulf.

Drainage is a constant problem for the city between the bridges.
