Hometown News For Orange County, Texas
A nine run first inning that included a grand slam by Cardinal sophomore Joseph Robertson helped put a quick end to the West Orange-Stark Mustangs 12-2 in five innings in Cardinal Field Friday.
Bridge City nailed down the Dist.
21-3A Championship last week defeating Hamshire-Fannett 8-0 and are ready to launch a fourth straight state playoff campaign.
It was Robertson’s second grand slam of the season as Big Red has marched through district play undefeated.
But it hasn’t been a walk in the park for the 2008 Cardinals (13-0).
Twice this season they have faced their district nemesis the Jasper Bulldogs who knocked Bridge City out of the state playoffs in the third game of the Region III Finals series last season.
“It’s been a tough season,” said Bridge City Cardinal head coach Billy Bryant.
“We have had to battle all the way.
We faced some good teams and out played them.” The Cardinals have a bye in the bi-district round and will enter the playoffs in the Region III area round that will be decided by May 10.
Tuesday night the Cardinals conclude Dist.
21-3A play and host Senior Night against Hardin-Jefferson .
A warm-up game for the playoffs is scheduled against Houston St. Thomas, Friday at 5:00 p.m in Cardinal Field.
“The best part of the season was beating Jasper,” said senior Cardinal left fielder and pitcher Jaden Dillon.
“We got behind and battled back to beat the defending state champions on their home field.” The come-from-behind 7-5 victory over Jasper punctuated a season that is unmarred going into Tuesday nights season finale.
Cardinal first baseman Blake Snyder took a turn on the hill for the win against the WO-S Mustangs.
Snyder gave up just four hits in the contest.
Along with Robertson’s grand slam Dillon scored twice.
Dustin Breaux was 1-for-2 at the plate including a RBI double and two runs.
