Legacy Park

Legacy Park, a project of the Little Cypress-Mauriceville Education Foundation, Inc, will soon be under construction.

Ground breaking for the park, located under the trees by the LCM Administration Building on FM 1130, will be held on Monday, May 19.

The Foundation will host “Pancakes in the Park” as a thank you to the community for its support of the Foundation’s various projects which raise funds to provide grants to teachers for enrichment activities or equipment throughout the LCM District.

Breakfast will be served from 7:00 to 8:00 a.m., with the ground breaking ceremony at 8:00.

The park, designed by LCM graduate, Cody Courmier, will surround the bear that was donated to the District by A.C. and Jane Hebert of Vinton. Engraved bricks will be used to pave the trails and seating areas around the bear. The Foundation will continue to sell the personalized bricks as an on-going project. The bricks are $30 each and have three lines, with room for 14 spaces on each line. The Education Foundation’s current president and the one who came up with the idea for Legacy Park is Dale Carlton, a graduate and retiree who taught in the LCM District for twenty-eight years.

According to Ms.

Carlton, working on a committee collecting the history of Little Cypress and Mauriceville schools sparked her interest.

Her father, Ira Clark, was one of the first graduates of Little Cypress High School in 1929.

“Working on the history gave me the opportunity to meet many people from both communities,” said Carlton.

“I was impressed with their pride and eagerness to assist in gathering historical information and memorabilia.

It was then that I wished that there was a place where we could honor people that have been a part of the legacy of both communities and the schools.

This ongoing park project will continue to grow and beautify our district while establishing a special place to visit for photographs and quiet, reflective moments.”

Marlene Courmier, Foundation Board member and retired LCM teacher agrees with Carlton. “I think of Legacy Park as a community undertaking. It will be an ongoing project for years to come, a beautiful area to spend time with your family, and packed with history from the entire community not only from LCM.”

Bricks will be available for purchase at “Pancakes in the Park,” as will tickets for a deer hunt on J & D Whitetail Ranch for the coming deer season. Deer Hunt tickets are $5.00 and the guided hunt assures a buck and a doe and includes $500 for lodging and travel.
