Lamar State-PA 'Junior Discovery' program begins June 16

The Continuing Education Department at Lamar State College-Por tArthur is accepting registration for "Junior Discovery 2008," an enrichment program for students entering second, third, and fourth grades in the fall.

Junior Discovery offers students one week of fun and interesting classes June 16-20. Classes meet from 1 to 4:30 p.m. each day, with each student attending two classes. The cost of the program is $100, which includes all supplies, a T-shirt and soft drinks for the week. Instructors are Lamar State College-Port Arthur faculty and staff, teachers from local school districts and community members with expertise in the topics being presented.

The classes include: Art 101: Use various mediums to create unique projects.

Basketball: Learn to dribble, shoot and play basketball.

Clay Sculpting: Learn to model your favorite cartoon, celebrity or fantasy character in clay.

CSI Jr: Help solve a crime using the basics of crime scene investigation.

Fun with Computers: Discover computers through educational games and graphics.

Jr.

Chefs: Cook, cut, chop, roll and decorate your way to fun in the kitchen.

Krafty Kids: Make your own arts and crafts to keep or give away.

Scrapbooks and Stamping: Create a fun tour of your last vacation or school year using pictures and your imagination.

Also create hand-made cards for family and friends.

Sign Language: Learn the beauty of a language without sound.

Spanish: Learn the basics of the Spanish language.

Step Back in Time: Study the history of Port Arthur and tour some of Port Arthur's historic homes.

Woodcrafters: Create a project using wood (students will not use saws in this class).

Classes will be kept to a maximum of 12 students.

Every class includes hands-on activities.

Area individuals, business and organizations have contributed to the success of the program by donating money, which provides scholarships for qualified students who otherwise would not be able to participate in the program.

The Continuing Education Department is accepting donations for this year's program.
