BC Cardinals drag out Needville in 2-1 loss

The Bridge City Cardinals battled into an extra inning but couldn't crack a 1-1 gridlock with the Needville Blue Jays in game one of the Region III area series.

The Blue Jays smacked an eighth inning home run breaking it wide open as Needville took the first round 2-1 at Humble High School.

Both Needville scores came from homeruns that marred an otherwise near perfect game for Cardinal sophomore pitcher Matt Hicks.

The first Needville homer came in the top of the fourth inning.

But Big Red fired up a score in the bottom of the inning to tie it up when Hicks scored from second base on an RBI double by junior third baseman Blake Hubbard.

Cardinal senior left fielder Jaden Dillon doubled twice in the contest in the fifth and seventh innings but couldn't advance to third.

Hicks, with some amazing play by Cardinal infielders, kept Needville in their clutches until the extra eighth inning.

The Cardinals (13-2) failed to score their last time at bat ending the contest.

The Cardinals take another shot at Needville in game two of the series at Humble High School at 7:30 p.m.

Game three will be played Saturday at 2:00 p.m.
