Charles Laurie Burleigh Sr., 89, of West Orange, died Thursday, Jan. 29, 2009, at Baptist Hospital in Orange.A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 1:30 p.m. Monday, Feb. 2, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Orange. Father Joseph P. Daleo, pastor, will be the celebrant. Burial will follow at Hillcrest Memorial Gardens near Bridge City. Visitation will be 2-4 p.m. Sunday at Claybar Funeral Home in Orange. A rosary will be recited at 3 p.m. Sunday, also at the funeral home.

Born in Sunset, Louisiana on May 8, 1919, he was the son of Henry Joseph and Mary Elizabeth (DeValcourt) Burleigh. Mr. Burleigh retired from Texaco in Port Arthur following 32 years of service. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II, a member of VFW Post 2775 and St. Mary’s Catholic Church.

He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, one sister;  wives, Hilda Daw Burleigh and Karen Thrailkille Burleigh; step-granddaughter, Trisha Phelps; and his step-son-in-law, Richard Parrish.

He is survived by his children, Sheryl Nelson and her husband, Pat, Harold Burleigh and his wife, Jennifer, Charles L. “Buddy” Burleigh and his wife, Dalrene; step-daughters, Kathy Robicheaux and her husband, Andy, Dyanne Parrish and June Hein.

Honored to serve as their grandfather’s pallbearers, Mr. Burleigh is also survived by his grandchildren, Jeffrey Nelson, Todd Nelson, Shaun Nelson, Scott Burleigh, Leigh-ann (Burleigh) Trawhon, Cory Burleigh, Mark Trouille and Richie Parrish.

He is also survived by his sisters-in-law, Opal Burleigh and Mildred “Black” Burleigh; 12 great-grandchildren, one great-great-grandchild, three step-grandchildren, three step-great-grandchildren, one step-great-great-grandchild, numerous nieces and nephews.
