Journalism students place at UIL meets

  The West Orange-Stark High School Journalism team led their classmates, capturing nine places at the Little Cypress-Mauriceville Battlin’ Bear UIL Academic Practice Meet recently.

Shonnalee Jacobs took first place honors in news writing. She was also third in headline writing; while Alayna Jacobs was second in the same event.

Feature writers Jordan Darnall, Karli Flurry and Kylie Hughes took three of the six places in competition, earning second, third and sixth, respectively.

In editorial writing, Tinesha Mix placed fifth and Karli Flurry placed sixth.

Additionally, the WO-S students won the second-place journalism team award.

In other events, Ortavious Hypolite placed sixth in current events. Robert Jiles placed fourth in computer applications. Samantha Bailey placed sixth in prose.

Kris Welcome also placed fourth in Lincoln Douglas Debate competition.

In January, WO-S HS students also competed at the Hamshire-Fannett High School UIL Academic Practice Meet. In editorial writing, Tinesha Mix placed second and Shonnalee Jacobs placed fourth.

In news writing, Kylie Hughes was second and Alex Jenkins fifth; Leigh Anne Dallas was fifth in headline writing; and Rebekah Ragsdale was fifth in prose.
