OC Officer assaulted by LCM student

An Orange County detective was assaulted at Little Cypress-Mauriceville High School this afternoon when he attempted to break up a fight between two teenage boys.

According to a statement from the school, the incident started with an accident that resulted in a minor injury in the field house.

"Though the student was not seriously hurt and remained in school, the circumstances surrounding the injury led to misunderstanding and harsh words. In an effort to de-escalate the situation, the police officer on duty made an attempt to detain the student, which resulted in an assault on the officer," said Sherry Combs for LCM.

Detective Mike Langley Jr. was in the high school cafeteria around 1:45 p.m., when he observed the fight and tried to break it up.

One of the boys, a 16-year-old, turned on the detective and began punching him, hitting him in the side of the head causing Langley to lose vision in his right eye. The student continued to fight the officer forcing Langley to activate his tazer to subdue the male.

The student was then arrested and charged with assault of a public servant.

Langley was transported to Baptist hospital, treated and released.
