Just one more game to go and the state’s No. 4 ranked Bridge City Cardinal baseball team have the opportunity to put the polish on a perfect 10-0 district season.
Celebrating “Senior Night” Tuesday the Cardinals took down the Orangefield Bobcats 9-1 in Cardinal Stadium. It was the 15th consecutive win for Bridge City under head coach Chad Landry.
The Cardinals (23-1, 9-0) claimed the Dist. 21-3A crown defeating the West Orange-Stark Mustanks 6-0 last Friday.
The Cardinals and Bobcats were locked in a scoreless ball game for four innings until Eric Mathews cracked it open with a two run double to put Bridge City ahead 2-0. The Cardinals scored again in the fifth inning before Grant Encalade’s three run homer put BC ahead 6-0.
Jacob Felts scored Orangefield’s lone run in the top of the sixth inning. The Cardinals answered when Anthony Cessac was plated for a 7-1 lead. Dustin Breaux’s two run double put the Bobcats away for the evening.
Matt Hicks went the distance on the hill for Big Red. Jace Statum put in five innings of work for Orangefield.
The Cardinals now turn their sights to Hamshire-Fannet to finsih district play Friday on the road. And from there the sky is the limit as the state playoffs begin.
The Cardinals haven’t had an undefeated district season since 2006. The 2009 Cardinals undoubtably want to enter the playoffs unscathed.
Orangefield (18-9, 5-4) defeated the Silsbee Tigers 7-6, Monday and face the WO-S Mustangs Friday for Bobcat “Senior Night” in a contest that could impact playoff hopes for either team. It is a must win for the Mustangs who lost to Hardin-Jefferson 4-2 in nine innings, Tuesday.
