Meet the candidates

Greater St. Paul Christian Fellowship Church will host a Meet the Candidates Night at 6 p.m., Thursday at 1704 N. 14th St. in Orange. It will be an open forum for candidates seeking office for Orange City Council and School Board in Saturday’s election. BC Masonic Lodge re-opens

The Bridge City Masonic Lodge #1345 will hold their first regular meeting at 7:30 p.m., May 12 at 365 N. John St. The lodge has been under repair and remodeling since Hurricane Ike. Max Pelham, worshipful master, would like to thank Madison Lodge 126 for the use of their lodge to hold meetings. VFW Post 9854 in Vinton, La. will have a special Memorial Day Tribute to deceased VFW members at 2 p.m. May 21, at the post home, exit 4, La. 109. Family members are encouraged to attend. The Orange Community Band, under the direction of Art Ferris, in conjunction with the Lamar University Jazz Band and the professional big band “Night and Day Orchestra”, both under the direction of Dr. Wayne Dyess will perform a benefit concert for the Bridge City Bands at 7 p.m., Tuesday, May 19 in the Bridge City High School Cafetorium. The Orange Community Players auditions for Fun for Funds VI are set for 7 p.m., Monday, May 11 at the playhouse. The Orange County Retired Senior Citizens will meet at 10 a.m., Tuesday, May 19 at the Salvation Army on Martin Luther King Jr. Drive. Juanita Toronjo from the Orange County Historical Society will be the guest speaker. Bring a covered dish to share for the noon meal. They are still collecting soaps for Orange Christian Services. The 17th Annual Starks Mayhaw Festival sponsored by the Starks Business and Civic Association has been set for May 14-16.

Events include carnival rides, food and craft vendors, poster contest, bike parade, gospel singing, country western/rock music, children’s games, pony rides, mechanical bull, domino tournament and an auction.

Located in Starks at the corner of La.

109 and La.12, the festival will open on Thursday, May 14.

The talent show will be on Thursday.

Entries must be at the courtesy booth by 7 p.m.

Age divisions are elementary, middle school, high school and adult.

Trophies will be awarded.

Mayhaw jelly for judging must be turned in by 8 p.m., on Friday, May 15 at the courtesy booth.

Each contestant must turn in two pint jars with no labels.

The festival will serve hot biscuits, Mayhaw jelly and home churned butter at 8:30 a.m., Saturday, May 16.

The Tourism Committee will serve biscuits and jelly at the Welcome Center on Interstate 10 East in Toomey, May 11.

Starks Lions Club will sponsor the Second Annual Domino Tournament.

The tournament will start at 10 a.m., Saturday, May 16, at the Lions Club Building at 4743 Evangeline Highway.

The city of Pinehurst’s annual spring clean-up, free for Pinehurst residents only, will be from 7:30 to 11:30 a.m. May 30 at the MacArthur Shopping Center in the parking lot of the old Sears building. Proof of residency is required through a driver’s licence, water bill or similar ID. Accepted items include wood, furniture and freon-free appliances. Hazardous Materials not accepted include tires, paints, cleaners, antifreeze, car batteries, used oil, insecticides, swimming pool chemicals and gas tanks. Lamar-PA auditions

The Lamar State College-Port Arthur Theater Department and the Port Arthur Little Theater will conduct auditions May 26-28 for the cast of their combined summer musical, “Annie Get Your Gun.”  LSC-PA theater director Keith Cockrell said students and members of the community are invited to audition for the show, which has roles for both adults and children.

“We try to make sure that everyone who shows up to audition feels welcome,” he said.

“We will teach songs from the show at the auditions.

Casting will be as inclusive as the script allows.” Auditions begin at 7 p.m.

Veterans’ tribute

Al Caldwell of KLVI-AM will speak at the sixth annual Tribute to Orange County Veterans at 2 p.m. May 24 at Heritage Veterans Memorial Plaza, 3810 Martin Luther King Jr. Drive in Orange. The plaza is on the campus of Orange First Church of the Nazarene. Also featured will be the Southeast Texas Color Guard, the Harmony Exporters of the Southeast Texas Barbership Chorus, the Orange Community Band and Patriot Riders Motorcycle Group. Installation of officers is scheduled when the Orange County Retired Teachers’ Association meets at 11 a.m. May 12 at Wesley United Methodist Church, 401 37th St. in Orange. The organization, which helps represent retired school personnel before the state Legislature, is taking on new members. State dues are $25 and local, $5. The Lamar State College-Port Arthur Small Business Development Center will present two business start-up workshops during May. SBDC consultant Conrad Cooper will lead the May 12 business start-up workshop from 6 to 9 p.m.

at the Nederland EDC Office, 1903 Atlanta Ave. SBDC consultant Kasey Taylor will lead the May 26 workshop from 9 a.m.

to noon at the LSC-PA Small Business Development Center, 1401 Procter St. in Port Arthur.

The free business start-up workshops cover business plans, funding, employees and taxes for first-time business owners.

Attendance at one workshop is required prior to a new business owner’s first one-on-one meeting with a SBDC business consultant.

The SBDC offers individual consulting for small business owners at no charge.

The center helps prospective business owners by providing financial analysis, loan preparation assistance and help in setting up a business plan.

March of Dimes benefit

The annual Orange County March of Dimes March-for-Babies is set for Saturday. The 3.2- mile / 5K-walk is hosted by Little Cypress-Mauriceville’s Health Occupations Students of America (HOSA) will take place at the LC-M High School stadium track. This year’s Senior Citizen Rally Day with the theme “April Showers Bring May Flowers,” will be May 12 at the VFW Hall on Texas 87 in Orange. The day will begin at 8:30 a.m. and end around 2 p.m. Events include bingo from 9 to 10 and health screenings / demonstrations from 8:30 to 11. Features include a guest speaker, free lunch, entertainment and awards going to the male and female senior citizen of the year, oldest man and woman, couple married the longest and oldest newlyweds. WO Chiefs 40th reunion

West Orange “Chiefs” class of 1969 will hold its 40th class reunion 6:00 p.m.

until 11:45 p.m., Saturday, Aug. 8, at Sunset Grove Country Club in Orange.

Registration fee is $30 per person and $60 per couple to cover the price of the buffet dinner, building rental, DJ services for music, postage, printing and other expenses related to the reunion.

There will be a cash bar.

WO-C will hold Blood Drive

West Orange – Cove CISD will hold a blood drive 11 a.m. – 6 p.m., Monday, May 4 at Anderson Elementary School in the Health Classroom. The community is invited to participate. Blood donors must be at least 17 years of age, a minimum of 110 pounds, and in general good health. All donors will be required to show proper identification. LC-M cancelled field trips

After consultation with health officials and other southeast Texas school districts, Little Cypress-Mauriceville CISD has cancelled all student field trips and student travel outside of Orange County until May 11. Staff members will make their own decisions regarding attendance at workshops and conferences. This is in response to the swine flu outbreak. Seahawks plan softball tryout day

The Lamar State College-Port Arthur Seahawks women’s softball team will hold open tryouts Saturday, May 16, for current high school juniors and seniors and students now enrolled at Lamar State or planning to attend the college in the 2009 fall semester.

The tryouts will take place at Martin Field, 1000 Lakeshore Drive on the Lamar State campus.

Position players will work out from 9 a.m.

to noon; pitchers and catchers from 1 to 3 p.m.

Seahawks head coach Vance Edwards said the college has athletic scholarships available for the 2009-10 season.

Lamar State competes in Region XIV, a Division I conference of the National Junior College Athletic Association.

Interested players are asked to download a registration form from the Softball page of the college website: http://www.lamarpa.edu, fill out the form and then follow the instructions for returning the form to the college.

Prospective players must show proof that they had a physical during the past year.

GOALS hosts Adult Spelling Bee

The Greater Orange Area Literacy Services will have its 11th Annual “Adult Spelling Bee Challenge” on Friday, May 8, from 11:30 a.m.

to 1:30 p.m.

It will be held at the Lamar State College-Orange Student Gym.

Teams of three adults each are sponsored by area businesses.

This will be GOALS major fund raiser for 2009 to provide programs for adults who want to learn English, need to get their GED or just have a desire to learn to read.

Spelling Bee tickets are $12 per person for lunch and program.

Now What? The Orange Community Players will be hosting the Young People’s Theater Workshop (YPTW).

It is a five week long summer program that gives local youth the opportunity to learn about and experience the performing arts first hand.

Students will begin the program with a week of theatrical related workshops before beginning work on this year’s production of The Jungle Book Kids.

Students will work onstage and behind the scenes acting, dancing, singing, building sets and props for their final performances for the public.

Enrollment in the workshop is limited to sixty students, ages 6 - 18.

Registration begins at 10 a.m., May 9 at OCP playhouse and will remain open until filled.

Registration fee is $25, with discounts for multiple children in the same family household.

The workshop begins June 15 and final performances will be presented July 16-19.

Workshop hours will be Monday, Tuesday, Thursday ands Friday evenings from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m.

A full schedule will be available at registration.

Due to the limited enrollment, there will be no preregistration.

The estimated cost to Orange Community Players, Inc. per student enrolled in YPTW is upwards of $100 each.

The additional funding in years past has come in the form of grants from local foundations.

Although the theater received some funds, they are still nearly $4,000 short of the amount needed to complete the workshop.

Several sponsorship opportunities are available for local businesses to show their support for Youth Theater.

Level One: $100.00 - A 2.5”x4” ad in the production program Level Two: $250.00 - Level one, plus the children will carry a banner your company provides across the stage during each of the four performances.

Level Three: $500.00 - Level one and two, plus your company name/logo on the back of the workshop t-shirts provided to all 60 children and made available to their parents.

Choosing to make a donation rather than participate in the sponsorship opportunities is welcomed.

All donations are tax-deductable to this 501(c)3 nonprofit organization.
