Cardinals to host CABC Baseball Tournament

Bridge City posted a 4-1 record in the Nederland tournament, but came up short to West Brook in the finals. The Cardinals started off by beating Hardin-Jefferson 10-1, with a nice pitching performance by Mitchel Hubbard, followed by going toe-to-toe with West Brook to a 1-1 tie. BC collected the win with the tiebreaker.

Bridge City had an easy time with C.E. King. They took the game 11-1 behind the pitching of Forrest Zoch. Zoch recorded 10 strikeouts, one hit batter, no walks, all while giving up only one hit and one un-earned run in five innings of work. The Cardinals went to work early scoring four runs in the first inning. Joe Robertson walked, followed by a Matt Hicks single. They both advanced on a double steal. Mitchel Hubbard singled in the first run of the game, followed by a pass ball that plated a run. Matt Menard hit an RBI double and the fourth run came from a sac fly from Dylan Mulhollan. 

Three more runs came in the second inning. Zach Smith led off with a single, advanced to third on pass balls. Hicks walked, and stole his second base of the game. Hubbard and Menard drew walks, Menard earning an RBI for his free pass. Forrest Zoch stepped up and helped his cause with a two run scoring single. In the forth inning Robertson started with a double followed by a Hicks RBI single. Luke Rhodes slapped a double, followed by Hubbard recording his second RBI of the game with a sac fly. In the final inning two more runs came across. Hayden Guidry hit a double, followed by a Tyler Roy run scoring double. The final run came off the bat of Hicks with a single.

Bridge City and Nederland battled each other to see who would go to the finals. If you missed this one, you missed a wild and crazy game. Coach Chad Landry gave the ball to the freshman, Hayden Guidry to face the 4A power Bulldogs. Hayden pitched four innings of no-hit ball. Nederland had one hit on the scoreboard, but it was from some generous bookkeeping. The Dogs finally got to Guidry in the fifth inning, and then Zach Smith replaced him. The Cardinals scored runs in each of the first three innings.

Joe Robertson led off with a triple and scored on a pass ball.

In the second inning Cameron Dishon walked, Zach Smith hit a single, and then Robertson posted an RBI single scoring Dishon.

Smith advance to second on Robertson’s single stole third and scored on a pass ball.

In the third inning Matt Menard hit a double and scored on Dishon’s single.

The Cardinals did not score any runs in the fourth, fifth or sixth innings.

Hicks picked up two more singles while Menard and Mulhollan each added a single.

The Bulldogs scored four runs in the bottom of the fifth to tie the game.

Zach Smith came in to relieve Guidry in the fifth and also pitched the sixth keeping the game at a tie.

In the seventh Bridge City went back on top with a double from Menard, followed by two singles from Zoch and Mulhollan, Mulhollan with the RBI.

Hicks came in to close the game but he gave up a double, an RBI single, a base on balls and an error in the field that tied the game.

The bases were loaded with Nederland star player (Texas recruit) Kirby Bellows coming off the bench to pinch-hit. Landry called on Colby Carpenter to get them out of a jam. Bellows hit a ground ball to Hicks at short; Hicks threw home to Menard for the force out.

Everyone was shouting to tag Bellows because he was walking to first. Meanwhile the runner on second was rounding third and coming home. Menard went down the line and tagged Bellows for the second out, while Hicks sprinted from short to home plate just in time to receive a throw from Menard for a triple play, tagging the runner out on a close play at the plate. A triple play that kept the game tied 5 to 5.

Robertson led the eighth off with a walk.

Hicks faked a hit by pitch that confused Nederland but not the umpire.

Hicks and Robertson took off jogging and Nederland snapped that the pitch did not hit Hicks.

The Nederland catcher then over threw second allowing Robertson to advance to third.

Hicks returned back to the plate and ended up drawing a walk.

A pitch, to load the bases for the Cardinals, hit Luke Rhodes.

Evan Boren hit an infield single to put the Card’s back on top.

Menard was hit by a pitch and Zoch drew a walk, both recording RBIs.

Carpenter came back out to pitch the eighth inning, taking the win with an 8-5 victory.

One crazy game played by two fine ball clubs who gave the fans an entertaining night.

Bridge City played West Brook in the finals but lost 11-1. The Cardinals will host the CABC tournament starting Thursday.

The Orangefield Bobcats took their tournament, posting a 4-0 record. They scored an abundance of runs and showed some very good pitching. They started off by spanking Central 14 to 1, giving up only three hits. The Bobcats scored 10 more runs in the nightcap against Tyler All Saints, giving up two hits, but no runs. In the first two games there were no walks and only one batter that was hit by a pitch. Orangefield jumped out to a 5-1 lead against Central. Jace Statum got things started with a double, stole third and came home on a pass ball. Corey Huckabay hit a single and swiped second.

Chase Angelle reached on an error from the right fielder; follow by a three run bomb off the bat of Quinton Evans that went deep into the trees in left field. Jonathan DeRamus stepped up and hit a double, followed by a Josh Watson RBI single that plated DeRamus for the fifth run. Statum started with a walk in the second inning, then stole his second base of the game, advancing to third on a pass ball.

A pitch hit Jacob Felts and Angelle plated Statum with a ground ball to second. The Cat’s put another five spot on the scoreboard in the third. DeRamus walked and moved to second on a pass ball. Watson plates DeRamus for the second time with a single and moved over to second on another pass ball. Kyle Fontenot reached on an error from the left fielder followed by Derrick Evans’s two run scoring triple. Huckabay reached on an error from the first baseman scoring Derrick Evans, then three walks followed to Felts, Quinton Evans and DeRamus.

DeRamus recorded an RBI with his walk.

Orangefield scored their final three runs in the fourth.

Fontenot reached on an error to the shortstop and took second on a pass ball.

Derrick Evans walked and Statum hit a deep fly ball that scored Fontenot who tagged up at second.

The last two runs came off a Huckabay triple, scoring Derrick Evans.

Felts then hit a sac fly that scored Huckabay.

Quinton Evans started on the hill, giving up only two hits, hitting one batter, striking out six and only allowing one run to cross the plate in four innings of work.

Austin Scales was called to close the game, giving up one hit.

Scales was helped with a nice run and catch by Statum that also doubled the runner up at first.

In the nightcap, Statum handled the pitching chores, striking out nine, giving up two hits with no walks and no runs. Orangefield started off quickly again with four runs in the first inning. Statum led off with a bunt single, followed by a Huckabay walk, then an error by the second baseman that allowed Felts to reach first while scoring Statum.

Angelle plated Huckabay and Felts with a triple then came across to score on a DeRamus single. They added one run in the second. Statum reached on a fielder’s choice, then took second with a steal, moved to third on a Huckabay single and scored on a Felts sacrifice fly. In the third, Quinton Evans and DeRamus both walked. Scales hit into a fielder’s choice followed by a double by Watson scoring Quinton Evans and Scales. Derrick Evans reached on an error and came in to score on a Statum triple. The Bobcats scored their final run in the fourth. Angelle led off with a double, moved to third on a pass ball and scored on a DeRamus single.

The Bobcats went on to beat Kelly 4-0 and Memorial 13-7 in the championship game. Orangefield was scheduled to play Kelly March 9, and will compete in the Bridge City tournament starting Thursday.

West Orange dropped a tough one to Shepherd 4-2, but rebounded and played well the rest of the tournament.

Zane Anderson pitched a complete game against Dayton.

He gave up seven hits, hit one batter, struck out three and had no walks.

He only allowed one run to cross the plate late in the seventh.

The Mustangs jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning.

Anderson drew a walk following by a homerun off the bat of Jordan Darnall.

They scratched for another run in the second inning with Jake Klinkhammer walking, advancing to second on a throwing error by the catcher.

Josiah Phares and Justin Sparrow had back too back singles to bring in Klinkhammer.

Two more runs came in the third with Jacoy Finney reaching first with the help of the second baseman’s error.

Taylor Turley and Zach Drouillard had back too back doubles, with Drouillard recording two RBIs.

Turley added a single in the fifth frame.

West Orange’s last run came in the sixth inning with a line drive homerun to left courtesy of Justin Sparrow.

West Orange battled Jasper but came up short 4-1. The Mustangs were scheduled to play Vidor March 9 and will travel to Kirbyville to play in their tournament starting Thursday.

Vidor went 3-1 in the Certa-Bearden tournament. They started with a victory against Dayton 8-4. Then came the match a lot of people were hoping for. The Pirates and Jasper Bulldogs went toe to toe with Vidor coming out on top 2-0. Vidor went on to beat Center 4-2. They met back up with Jasper with a different outcome, a 4-3 loss. Vidor may get another chance at the Bulldogs as they travel to play in Jasper tournament Thursday.

Little Cypress-Mauriceville had a good tournament out in Brenham. They turned in a 3-2 record. They beat Santa Fe 12-4, Montgomery 3-1, and took down New Caney 2-0. They dropped their last two games to Bryan 5-2 and Brenham 10-0. The Bears were schedule to play Kelly March 8 and will compete in the New Caney tournament starting Thursday.Enter your body text here.
