Chamber names Students of the Month

Bridge City Chamber of Commerce has named Bridge City High School’s Lisa Huynh and Orangefield High School’s Derrick Evans as Students of the Month.

Huynh is ranked fourth out of 163 students with a grade point average of 4.71. The daughter of Bank Nguyen and Hoa Huynh, Lisa has received the honor of being a UIL Calculator State Qualifier, Academic All-District and Who’s Who among All-American Scholars. She served as president of the Bridge City Executive Student Council, parliamentarian for the National Honor Society and treasurer for the Art Club.

Huynh is co-captain for the varsity cross country team, and manager for the boys’ basketball team. She is a four-year letterman in both cross country and track.

She is a LifeShare blood donor, participates in the Relay for Life and is a tutor for other students. 

Huynh plans to attend either Louisiana State University (LSU) or the University of Texas with a major in mathematics.

Cheryl Royal, director of student activities at Bridge City High School says Huynh is a “very well rounded, highly responsible and exceptional student” and not only is she “bright intellectually, but (she) also possessed many leadership skills.” Huynh has an incredible work ethic, as well as possessing a commendable character.

Faye Parish, math teacher at BCHS says “Lisa Huynh is a wonderful student.” She currently is Parish’s student aide and does anything asked of her in a quick and component fashion.

Evans, the son of Pleas and Carol Evans is ranked 54th out of 118 with a GPA of 3.47 on the college 4.0 scale.

He is an all around athlete playing football, basketball, and baseball all four high school years and served as a varsity starter three of the four years.

Evans has also been on the track team throughout high school and participated in the high jump and the mile relay.

He is a three-time region qualifier in the high jump.

Evans was named baseball All-District 2nd team as an outfielder his junior year, basketball All District 2nd team his sophomore and junior years and received an honorable mention his senior year.

In football, he was named All-District 1st team as a kicker for his sophomore, junior and senior years, 2nd team all district corner back, Orangefield’s Defensive Player of the Year his junior year and Port Arthur News Super Team Place Kicker his senior Year.

He participated in the Hurricane Ike Disaster Relief projects in 2008 and mowed lawns for the elderly in the summer of 2009.

Evans plans to attend Lamar University after high school and has not decided on a major yet.

He was chosen as student of the month by the boys athletic department. Coach Brain Huckabay says “Derrick Evans is a four sport athlete who always represented Orangefield High School with honor and character and is respected by his coaches and teammates. Derrick is a dependable team player who chooses to quietly lead by example,” he said. “His combination of academic and athletic leadership makes him the model student athlete.”
