Hometown News For Orange County, Texas
“Peggy’s on the Bayou” was named Business of the Month by the Bridge City Chamber of Commerce. Peggy and Richard Albair began Bridge City Seafood The Crab House in a portable building in 1986. They mainly sold live and clean crabs to restaurants and other customers. Thanks to the support of Bridge City, they expanded the business into a seafood market, providing docks for the public, crabbers and offered a place for those who would like to sit on the back porch and fish. In October 2007, they included the “Old Salt Poboy Shop” deli. They offered takeout orders for plants, businesses and the public.
When Hurricane Ike hit Bridge City, they came back to an empty building and were overwhelmed with what they should. Because of the steady customers and Coast Guard members asking when they would reopen, they decided to open a portable building on wheels, like a chuck wagon in days past, on Feb. 12, 2009. They renamed the business “Peggy’s on the Bayou.” Before long, they were once again delivering dinners.
With the help of April Richard, Peggy remodeled the inside of the building and made it into a restaurant, and was open for Father’s Day 2009.
“Peggy’s on the Bayou” has attracted people from Holland and the members of Parson Dance Studio from New York which performed at the Lutcher Theatre in Orange. Others have arrived on charter buses from Dallas, Austin, San Antonio, Houston, Lake Charles, Buna, Tyler, and other parts of Texas and Louisiana.
Peggy says, “Customers that have come in my life, I cherish; especially Mr. Ray Chandler who has passed away.” Customers love going to Peggy’s because they can relax and enjoy themselves while feeling they’re part of a family due to Peggy’s hospitality.
Their number one seller is their burger made with a half pound of beef. The “Cowbayou” burger is a “pounder.” Burgers and poboys are always served on sweet sourdough or jalapeno bread.
Not hungry for a burger? Other customer favorites include seafood food dinners, boiled crawfish or shrimp and steamed snow crabs.
Peggy’s on the Bayou is open seven days a week, 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., Monday through Saturday and 8 a.m. to 3 p.m., Sunday. They are located at 2682 East Roundbunch. You can also visit their website at http://www.bridgecityseafood.com or call them for pick up or delivery at 409-886-1115.
