Sponsorships available for kids’ golf tourney

Sabine Chapter of Credit Unions is seeking sponsors for its upcoming Kids Classic Golf Tournament in October. Various levels are still available: Gold- $3,000, Silver-$2,000, Bronze-$1000. Event sponsorships available: Lunch-$1,500, Drink Cart-1,000, Hole in One-$850, hole sponsor-$750.

Senior celebration

The 11th Southeast Texas Senior Celebration and Consumer Expo is set from 8:30 a.m.-2:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 14, at the Beaumont Civic Center. Admission and parking is free.

Highlights include Jerome the Magician, the Lamar University Jazz Band, a style show with Dillard’s, celebrity models, bingo and special presentations.

The expo will feature over 100 booth exhibitors, health screenings, live music from Rick Danna, refreshments, Aces Classic Cars, clowns, door prizes, and lots of valuable information. Home Instead Senior Care will once again provide transportation from the parking lot to the event.

Scrimmage rescheduled

The scrimmage against West Orange-Stark and Vidor originally set for Aug. 20, has been changed to Thursday, Aug. 19, at Dan R. Hooks Stadium at 7 p.m.

Receive Free Trees By Joining the Arbor Day Foundation

Everyone who joins the Arbor Day Foundation in August 2010 will receive 10 free white flowering dogwood trees.

The free trees are part of the nonprofit foundation’s Trees for America campaign, a program dedicated to environmental stewardship through the planting of trees.

“These trees will add year-round beauty to homes and neighborhoods,” said John Rosenow, chief executive and founder of the Arbor Day Foundation. “Dogwood trees have showy spring flowers, scarlet autumn foliage, and red berries that attract songbirds all winter long.”

The trees will be shipped postpaid between Oct. 15 and Dec. 10, at the right time for planting in each member’s area. The 6- to 12-inch trees are guaranteed to grow or they will be replaced free of charge. Planting instructions are enclosed with each shipment of trees.

New members of the Arbor Day Foundation also receive The Tree Book, which includes information about tree planting and care, and Arbor Day, the Foundation’s bimonthly publication.

LU season opener tickets available today

Current Lamar University students and football season ticket holders will be able to purchase tickets to the Cardinals’ season opener at McNeese State beginning today, Aug. 4, one week earlier than the general public.

The historic game, Lamar’s first since the 1989 season, is set for Saturday, Sept. 4 at Cowboy Stadium in Lake Charles. Ticket prices are set at $20 for reserved seats and $17 for general admission, with sales opening up to the general public on Aug. 11.

“We anticipate that the Cardinal Nation will be out in full force to support Lamar University football for the first game in 21 years,” said Larry Tidwell, interim athletics director.

To take advantage of the early sale, tickets must be purchased in person at the Montagne Center ticket office. Season ticket holders and students will be required to show valid identification to verify their status as such.

WOS season tickets on sale

Season tickets for the West Orange-Stark High School 2010 football season are ready. Previous season ticket holders should have received a letter with information concerning renewing their seats for the 2010 season. Those forms should be filled out and returned to the athletic office. Your season tickets will then be mailed to you. Current season ticket holders can also purchase their 2010 football tickets Wednesday, Aug. 4, from 9 a.m.-noon and 1-3 p.m. Tickets can be purchased at the athletic office at West Orange-Stark High School.

Season tickets not claimed by 3 p.m., Wednesday, Aug. 4, will go on sale to the general public. Season ticket holders needing additional tickets or wanting to change seats may do so during general public sales Aug. 10-11 from 9a.m.-noon and 1-3 p.m.

Season tickets will be $16 for four home games. After season ticket sales close, all tickets will be $5. Student tickets are $2 per ticket pre-game; they will not be sold at the gate.

Due to 3A district re-classification, away game tickets will not be available during season ticket sales. Pre-district away games can be purchased at the athletic office during the week of the game. District away games will have to be purchased at their gate the night of the game. Ticket prices at their gate will be $4 for adults and $2 for students.

OC Dems to meet

The Orange County Democratic Party will meet 6 p.m., Tuesday, Aug. 10 at K-Dans in Orangefield on Farm Road 105.

Am. Legion bingo

American Legion Auxiliary Unit 49, 108 Green Ave., offers bingo at 6:30 p.m. Sundays.

LU to host final football camp

Lamar will host its last football camp of the summer from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 17, at Vernon Field Glass Field of Champions. The camp is for high school students entering the 11th or 12th grade.

LSC-PA orientation

Lamar State College-Port Arthur will offer orientation for new students on Thursday, Aug. 5, in the Performing Arts Center, 1700 Procter St.

The orientation sessions, which begin at 1 p.m., are designed to help students begin their college education in a positive and productive manner. All new students, transfer students or those returning to school after some time off are encouraged to attend.

Participants will tour the campus and meet faculty members, department heads, advisers and other students currently attending the college.

In addition to seeing facilities, the students will learn about services offered, such as career counseling, job placement, student activities, scholarship opportunities and library services.

College staff members will be available to answer questions and deliver important information on admissions, the registration process, advising, scheduling, financial aid, testing and other services provided by the college.

The orientations end with a reception, refreshments and door prizes in the Student Center.

LIT orientation

Lamar Institute of Technology will offer an orientation sessions Tuesday, Aug. 10, 1-4 p.m.m Multipurpose Center on the LIT campus.

In order to get the most out of the orientation sessions, students should have completed the application process for LIT. Applications for admission and an explanation of the process are available in the student services office at LIT or on the Web site, http://www.lit.edu.

Subsidized child care

Catholic Charities of Southeast Texas is adding parents to its waiting list for subsidized child care. To qualify, applicants must meet income eligibility requirements and either be employed or in employment training at least 25 hours per week or be a full-time college student.

Catholic Charities serves as the contractor which administers subsidy funding to child care providers on behalf of the Workforce Solutions Southeast Texas Board. Parents eligible for the subsidy are responsible for selecting their own child care provider.

LSC-PA courses at Nederland HS

Lamar State College-Port Arthur will help students save money and travel time this fall by offering several college-level courses in the evening at Nederland High School.

“These courses will be exactly the same as if they were taught on the Lamar State campus,” said Gary Stretcher, vice president for Academic Affairs. “They are open to any student who is eligible to attend the college and who meet the course prerequisites.”

Two courses – Family Law and Introduction to Law and Legal Procedure – require only one night’s attendance per week. College Algebra, Introductory Chemistry and Chemistry for Allied Health meet two nights each week.

The science courses also include a lab session, which can be attended the same night as the course or on another night.

Friday, Aug. 20, is the final day of registration for fall semester, which begins Monday, Aug. 23. Students must apply for admission to the college before registering for classes.

Lamarissimo! season tickets

Season tickets and gift certificates for the upcoming 2010-11 season of the Lamarissimo! concert series showcasing the talents of outstanding student and faculty artists in ensemble and solo performances are now on sale in Lamar University’s Department of Music.

The 21st season opens Tuesday, Oct. 5, with the Jazz Bands concert, and continues with Faculty Artists on Thursday, Nov. 4; A Cappella Choir holiday concert on Sunday, Dec. 5; Wind Ensemble and Concert Band on Tuesday, March 3; and Cardinal Singers and Lamar Dance Company on Thursday, April 28.

The holiday concert will begin at 3 p.m. in the Jefferson Theater, 345 Fannin St. in downtown Beaumont. All others will start at 7:30 p.m. in the Julie Rogers Theater, 765 Pearl St.

Season tickets, priced at $40 for adults and $20 for students, include admission to all five concerts. Lamarissimo! gift certificates may be used for purchase of adult season tickets.

Individual concert tickets, $15 for adults and $10 for students, will be available before each concert.

Feeding the needy

The Bridge City/Orangefield food program, administered by St. Paul United Methodist Church, helps feed low income families in the BC/OF community. Program members seek more families to serve. Distributions are first Thursdays at the Community Center in Bridge City beginning at 8 a.m. Proof of residency is required and qualification for service will be determined at that time.

Founded by W.A. and Margaret Richter, the program continues with the help of many volunteers and other contributors. St. Paul UMC, 1155 W. Roundbunch Road, accepts donations of aluminum cans which they sell to earn money to buy supplies for the program. Other donations are also accepted.

Farmers’ Market

The spring Farmers’ Market continues Saturday at the MacArthur Shopping Center in the Big Lot’s parking lot off MacArthur Drive in Pinehurst.

Starting at 7 a.m., the market will be open until all vendors have sold their produce. Items include tomatoes, cucumbers, squash, eggplant, purple hull peas, a variety of peppers, blueberries, jellies, canned vegetables, pickles, homemade salsa, eggs, honey and baked goods.

Produce varies from week to week. There is no charge for vendors. The market will continue each Saturday until the crops are no longer available. The Texas AgriLife Extension Program again sponsors the event.

Swim team tryouts

The Little Cypress-Mauriceville Swim Team will have tryouts on Friday, Aug. 27, at 6 p.m. at the Sulphur Recreation and Aquatic Center. All swimmers must tryout and bring a completed 2010-11 athletic packet (including the physical). Packets are available from Diane Brown, athletic secretary. All athletes will need to swim a 100-yard freestyle and a 100-yard of another stroke for the tryout and they will be timed.

The Orangefield School District has released a list of dates the Paul Cormier Museum will be open to the public. The museum will be open 10 a.m.-2 p.m. on the following Saturdays: Aug. 21, Sept. 18, Oct. 16, Nov. 20 and Dec. 18.

LIT offers review classes in math and writing

Lamar Institute of Technology will offer Quick Success COMPASS® Reviews for Writing and Math. The review sessions will prepare students for various placement tests that they will need to take before enrolling in college.

Classes are Aug. 13 and 20. The Quick Math review is from 8 a.m.-noon; the Quick Writing review also is from 8 a.m.-noon. Each class costs $45.

Registration deadline for the Aug. 13 classes is Aug. 11, and the deadline for the Aug. 20 classes is Aug. 18.

Rear admiral to speak

Rear Adm. Mary E. Landry of the U.S. Coast Guard will speak at the LIT Foundation’s ninth annual “A Salute to the Real American Heroes” at 6 p.m. on Sept. 9.

The event will be held at Wesley United Methodist Church, 3810 North Major Dr., in Beaumont.

Cooks’ 2 Dozen + will provide the meal for the evening.

Proceeds from the “Salute” provide scholarships for students pursuing careers in programs in the Department of Public Service and Safety.

Seahawks mascot, dance team auditions

Lamar State College-Port Arthur students interested in joining the Seahawks Dance Team or being the costumed Seahawk mascot for the coming school year are invited to attend auditions at 2 p.m. Monday, Aug. 9, in the aerobic dance studio of the Carl Parker Center on the Lamar State campus.

The dance team and the mascot support the Seahawks men’s basketball and women’s softball teams at home games and other special events.

To qualify, prospective team members must be full-time students at the college and maintain a grade-point-average of at least 2.5. They also must bring a non-returnable photo and a current photo ID to the tryouts. Information packets are available on the second floor of the LSC-PA Student Center.

Tumbling experience is not required, but anyone who can tumble should note it on the application.

Dance/athletic clothes and comfortable dance shoes or sneakers are recommended for the auditions, which will include learning and performing a short dance routine and a cheer.

Computer courses for senior learners

Lamar State College-Port Arthur will offer three courses during the 2010 Fall Semester for students age 55 or older, who are interested in taking a course for personal enhancement or who want to earn a technical certificate.

Senior 55+ Program courses focus on computer skills that are useful to older learners.

The courses are:

* Introduction to Word Processing (1-3 p.m. Tuesdays) covers an overview of the production of documents, tables and graphics.

* Photo Digital Imaging I (1-3 p.m. Wednesdays) covers computer and software instruction for electronic imaging, including instruction on color, gray-scale, image conversation, presentation and ethics.

* Desktop Publishing (1-3 p.m. Thursdays) covers desktop publishing terminology, text editing and use of design principles with an emphasis on layout techniques, graphics, multiple-page displays and business applications.

Students who are age 65 or older can enroll in these courses at a reduced tuition rate.

LSC-PA business events

The Lamar State College-Port Arthur Small Business Development Center will present two free “Starting Your Own Business” workshops during August.

SBDC consultant Conrad Cooper will lead the Tuesday, Aug. 10, workshop from 6-9 p.m. at the LSC-PA Small Business Development Center, 1401 Procter Street. Cooper also will lead the Tuesday, Aug. 31, workshop from 9 a.m. to noon at the Nederland Economic Development Commission office, 1903 Atlanta Ave.

The free business start-up workshops cover business plans, funding, employees and taxes for first-time business owners. Attendance at one workshop is required prior to a new business owner’s first one-on-one meeting with a SBDC business consultant.

The SBDC offers individual consulting for small business owners at no charge. The center helps prospective business owners by providing financial analysis, loan preparation assistance and help in setting up a business plan
