LCM Bears face Bulldogs after OT win

The Bears will battle the Bulldogs in Nederland this Friday in the last district match-up of the season. The Bulldogs sit at an even 3-3 district record. The game will begin at 7:30 p.m.

Highlights from the Battlin' Bears 57-49 triple over time win:

Friday night at Battlin’ Bear Stadium it was not only a time to celebrate the annual Homecoming festivities that took place, but it was a time of 'do or die' for the Little Cypress-Mauriceville Bears.

The Bears went into the game with a 3-2 record and tied with two other teams in the district. It was crucial they defeat the Livingston Lions, especially at a time when every team is scratching for a spot in the playoffs.

While LCM hung with the Lions for a majority of the game, things were pretty tense for the Bears until the final quarter of the game, when things turned around and the Bears came around to win in triple overtime, 57-49.

The Bears are now tied with Port Neches-Groves for the second spot in District 20-4A with a 4-2 record.

The game started off with both teams going back and forth. Once again, quarterback Hunter Gonzales stepped up and did his part for the Bears, scoring the first touchdown for the Bears, followed by a touchdown pass to receiver Jordan Harmon with 9:56 left in the second quarter.

The Bears trailed 21-28 going into halftime.

The Lions’ biggest lead of the game came in the third quarter when they had a 35-21 advantage over the Bears. Eventually, as the tension in Bear Stadium rose, so did the score.

With the help of a long run by Alex Sezar, the Bears were only behind by one score late in the fourth quarter. With less than two minutes remaining in the game, the score was tied at 42-42 with a 46-yard pass to Zack Sonnier. And with that, the game was sent into overtime.

Both teams scored in the extra minutes, the score still even at 49-49, therefore going into double overtime. During the third round of overtime, the winning touchdown came from Harmon after a 25-yard from Gonzales.

Bear Stadium broke out into joyous pandemonium. Students, coaches and players rushed the field to celebrate the Bears’ victory.

Gonzales was named the Player of the Week by the Beaumont Enterprise, and it’s not the first time he has received this award.

“I feel very blessed and honored to win the award,” Gonzales said. “Winning a game like that was amazing. That will be one of the games I will never forget.”
