An eighth grader from Little Cypress Jr. High School won the school level competition during the National Geographic Bee, which was held recently.
Mark Returan, along with ten other students from across the campus competed in the competition.
Other finalists competing for the LCJH title include Brandon Morrow, Abby Cart, Michael Farnsworth, Mariah Blair, Sam Ross, Justice Peveto, Hallie Stack, Dallas Stewart (1st runner-up), and Megan McKinley.
Winners of school-level bees will now take a written test and up to 100 of the top scorers in each state will be eligible to compete in their state Bee.
Each year thousands of schools in the United States participate in the National Geographic Bee using materials prepared by the National Geographic Society. The contest is designed to encourage teachers to include geography in their classrooms, spark student interest in the subject, and increase public awareness about geography. Schools with students in grades four through eight are eligible for this challenging test of geographic knowledge.
The National Geographic Society will provide an all-expenses-paid trip to Washington, D.C., for state champions and teacher-escorts to participate in the National Geographic Bee national championship. For more information, go to http://www.nationalgeographic.com/geobee/link.
