Symphony Master Series 3 concert resurrects Mozart rivalry

The Symphony of Southeast Texas presents an exciting third installment of their Master Series this season, in which the Symphony Chorus will bring to light the controversial tale involving the most prolific and influential composer in history in “Amadeus 2.0” at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, March 3 at the Julie Rogers Theatre.

The performance includes Antonio Salieri’s Sinfonia in D major, “Veneziana;” Igor Stravinsky’s “Pulcinella” Suite; and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s “Requiem.”

“Requiem” is one of the most enigmatic pieces of music ever composed, largely because of the many myths and controversies surrounding it. The fact that an anonymous source commissioned the piece, Mozart suspected he was poisoned while writing it and it was left unfinished at his death all contribute to the fascination and suspense of the music.

“What Maestro Tipton has done with this concert is absolutely brilliant!” said SOST Executive Director Craig Escamilla. “In the 1980s, the movie ‘Amadeus’ really exploited the rivalry between Mozart and his contemporary, Salieri. So, we will resurrect, if you will, the rivalry through their music.”

The concert will also look at how a few early 20th Century composers, like Stravinsky, used music from Mozart's era, and even earlier, as the basis for some of their “neo-classical” works with Stravinsky’s “Pulcinella” Suite.

“It's a really creative program, and it's going to be a lot of fun!” added Escamilla.

Guests are invited to join Maestro Tipton for a pre-concert talk at 6:30 p.m., which will also include SOST trombonist Wayne Dyess and soprano soloist Debra Greschner. The performance will then begin at 7:30 p.m.

Single ticket prices range from $15 to $36; senior, student and group discounts are available. To purchase tickets or get more information, go to www.sost.orglink or contact the Symphony office at 892-2257.
