Robert Bob Rolf Shinn, 80 of Dallas, formerly of Orange, passed away at the Medical City Hospital in Dallas, Friday, March 1. Bob attended the Arabi High School in New Orleans, and graduated from the University of Arkansas with a bachelor's degree in Business in 1955, and was a member of the Sigma Chi Epsilon Fraternity. He also served in the United States Army.
Bob began his business career in New Orleans where he was an underwriter for Fireman's Fund Insurance Co. He worked with his father in the hotel industry and later became a hotel owner and operator of several hotel properties in Texas in the 1970's and 80's. He was on boards of many business and philanthropic organizations: Texas Hotel Lodging Association and Ramada Hotels Owners Association; Orange Savings and Loan, Lamar College Foundation, Lutcher Theater and the United Way in Orange; Orange Chamber of Commerce, where he served as past president and was awarded Citizen of the Year; and the Hughen Center and Bob Hope School for Disabled Children in Port Arthur.
Bob was instrumental in hosting entertainer Bob Hope to Orange/Port Arthur for several years to the fundraising gala benefiting the Hughen Center and school.
He was preceded in death by his father Ben Shinn of Magnolia, AR., and his mother Melcena (Jones) Deerman of New Orleans. He is survived by many close friends, relatives and several God children.
A memorial service will be held later this month at the Westminster Presbyterian Church, where he was a member, in Dallas, with a graveside service at Memorial Park Cemetery in Magnolia, AR.
