Hometown News For Orange County, Texas
Dancing is like dreaming with your feet and for one Bridge City dance company each step takes them closer to achieving not only their dreams but those of their instructor as well.
Studio C Dance Academy has been in business for 20 years, but Alicia Whitaker has owned it for three years. For” Miss Alicia”, as she is known by her students, this has been her crowning achievement.
With the new larger 5,000 square foot facility, located at 405 Parkside near the BCLL baseball park, things are changing in a “Big” way.
The new dance studio will be opening soon just in time for dance camp, class registrations and for the first time, a class for special needs children. She has about 80 students attending her classes, but she is looking to expand.
According to Alicia Whitaker, owner, nobody else in Orange County offers the classes to mentally and physically challenged children. The class will be on Tuesdays and they will have an opportunity to perform in the annual recital along with the other students of Studio C.
“This gives every child the opportunity to dance,” Miss Alicia said.
The recitals offer something for everyone. The entertaining show touches everyone’s heart and even offers a laugh or two as the students show off what they have learned while performing to various types of music and dance.
Dance camp is from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Aug. 5th through the 9th. Students from ages five through 18 will learn jazz and hip hop during the one hour class. It is $20 for one class and $30 for two classes.
Registration for classes is at the studio from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. August 9th and 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on August 10th.
Being a dance instructor and owning a studio is a lifelong passion for Whitaker. She has been dancing since she was four years old. During her teens she attended Bridge City High School where she was selected during her freshman year as “Strutter of the Year” She also won National Champion titles as a Strutter. Following graduation, she went on to become a part of the Beaumont Civic Ballet.
“I just love to share my passion for dance with the children,” Whitaker said.
