LCM HS students commended in scholarship program

Dr. Terri Estes, principal of Little Cypress-Mauriceville High School, announced Tuesday that three LCM High School seniors have been recognized for their outstanding academic achievement by the 2015 National Merit Scholarship Program.

A Letter of Commendation from the school and National Merit Scholarship Corporation, which conducts the program, was presented by the principal to these scholastically talented seniors. Chloe Fisher, Shrikara Murthy, and Alex Borel will be recognized by the LCM CISD Board of Trustees at their Oct. 13 meeting.

Ms. Fisher is one of 3,100 Outstanding Participants in the National Achievement Scholarship Program. These students scored in the top 3 percent of more than160,000 Black Americans who requested consideration in the 2015 National Achievement Scholarship Program when they took the 2013 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test. Chloe Fisher is looking forward to attending the University of Texas, where she plans to study environmental chemistry. Her mother is Olena Fisher.

Shirikara Murthy and Alex Borel have been honored as Commended Students by the National Merit Scholarship Program.

These students placed among the top five percent of more than 1.5 million students who entered the 2015 competition by taking the 2013 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT).

"The young men and women being named Commended Students have demonstrated outstanding potential for academic success," commented a spokesperson for NMSC. "These students represent a valuable national resource; recognizing their accomplishments, as well as the key role their schools play in their academic development, is vital to the advancement of educational excellence in our nation.

We hope that this recognition will help broaden their educational opportunities and encourage them as they continue their pursuit of academic success."

Shri Murthy has his sights set on Rice University, with a major in energy engineering and teaching. His parents are Venkatesh and Asha Murthy. Alex Borel is considering Vanderbilt University if he decides to major in in biochemistry en route to becoming an anesthesiologist or North Texas University if he opts for commercial music. His parents are Kelly and Ron Borel.

According to Dr. Estes, “It is wonderful for these students to receive recognition for their achievements. We are looking forward to the things they will accomplish throughout college and as they pursue their careers.”
